LLAR fills the holes in the roster, but then you're playing a complete faction against a complete faction with a commander.

A Jagdpanzer seems a bit strong to get earlier on. I would say to add a StuG III to pre-Panzer Authorization. Not only is it a lesser unit, but the OKW Announcer has voice over support for it: "StuG Drei panzer ready for action!" and "Stug tank ready for battle!" |
The panther has fine mobility but it really isnt this speed demon you are making it out to be. Stock its slower than comet valentine cromwell and m10, and its speed and acceleration only marginally exceed that of most other allied mediums.

I'm looking at it in terms of utility. The P4J is essentially the samething as the standard vetted P4 that they already get. The short-barreled P4 would make it like an OST Sherman and have it focused on infantry support.
The Sherman has better penetration (except at long range) than the Panzer IV, but 20 less armor.

Not really. The Maxim needs 6 models to compensate the horrible death loop, but then 6 models makes it extremely durable in the early game. And the big problem is that OKW has nothing to counter HMGs in the early game, except for flanking. This is a big problem on laney team games maps (like Red Ball Express) where they can't really be outmanoeuvred and spamming them shuts down an entire portion of the map rather easily. Ergo, we are pretty reluctant to directly buff the Maxim.
That's an understandable concern, but what about the Vickers HMG? Can't it do the same thing, but more effectively due to the larger arc and superior suppression? |
The Soviet campaign is from Stalingrad to the opera house, which gives a late 42-45 timeline for units.
The DLC missions start even earlier into case blue.
The Campaign also tailors you units to the timeline, for the most part, and Case Blue does the same and even includes a (rather shoddy) 'early war' restriction that removes or replaces certain units. The multiplayer armies are based off a more narrow timeline, which I already went over. |
Uhhh the Wehrmacht is actually based around 1941-1943 judging by their equipment, after Kursk because of their defensive posture (bunkers) and Elefant instead of Ferdinand (they were upgraded to the Ele after the battle). So not really 1944, unless you count the StG44s of course.
Ostheer and Soviet are based around 1943-1944; aside from the MP 44 there is the T-34 model 1944 (T-34-85) and the IS-2 using the late 1944 hull (glacis is sloped instead of stepped). USF and OKW are both based in late 1944 - 1945, specifically based off the units and equipment present at the Battle of the Bulge, this is the entire reason why OKW has unicorns like the infrared tech, Sturmtiger, or Flame Hetzer. British Forces are based in 1945 with the Comet tank.
That does leave some oddities like Soviets relying on T-34-76's to fight OKW's Panzer IV Ausf. J's, or sending in T-34-76's alongside M4A3 Sherman and Mk VIII Cromwell tanks. |
Now check the cost difference between a T-34/85 with a PzIV and a Sherman with a Panther. Actually if one's opponent is spamming allied mediums making Panther is not the best response, one would probably do better making stugs or PzIVs.
Except the gap between a Panzer IV and a T-34-85 is much smaller than the gap between a Sherman and Panther. Heck, I think the the gap between the T-34-85 and Panther might be larger than the one between the Panzer IV and the T-34-85, after all the Panzer IV will consistently penetrate the T-34-85. Now add in an OKW Panzer IV and I think you're on about equal footing with a T-34-85, as the OKW Panzer IV's higher armor (234) will protect it more than the T-34-85's normal armor (160). |
1) Ostheer panther has high tech and high cost But they get access to an option that other factions do not. Do you not think Soviets wouldn't go for T-34-85's if they could tech for them?
3) Panther has very low rear armor and can be penetrated by mediums even when vet 2 Too bad it has superior mobility so it's much harder for the slower blitz-less allied tanks to get behind it. If you have it supported at all, there is no excuse for taking rear armor hits.
4) Allied mediums have extra utility like smoke rounds, ram, extended vision, HE rounds Ram is an ability that hurts more than it helps, so the poor T-34-76 is left with weak stats and nothing to show for it.
6) As I have pointed allies have little reason to built medium since they can do with up-gunned infatry and TDs And mediums will be hard-countered by Panthers or larger, forcing Allies to always plan for the Panther. |
