...I would like to see MG damage upped slightly vs suppressed squads, and then ramped up again vs pinned squads.
This. Once suppressed, force squads to retreat sooner. Four suppressed Riflemen with a couple BARs thrown in can still do some serious DPS. That's fine...but make them pay in manpower or a lost squad if they stick around too long. This would require legit flanks to be coordinated as well, instead of "Oh my Conscripts just got suppressed and pinned, they can just hang out there while I bring this squad from halfway across the map to flank the MG."
I just don't understand where all the "blobbing is a legitimate strategy" thought comes from when the things that are supposed to counter blobs don't do it effectively. And it's not a matter of people thinking that their 1 MG should counter 4 squads. I understand that two squads can flank and beat my MG, IF USED PROPERLY...and I'm okay with that. It's really just a matter of requiring players to play the game with a little more thought and skill if they want to be successful.

I just faced a strategy that completely wrecked me. Advanced Warfare Commander, Pure con spam (8 in total) + PPsH and a lot of Oorah, no tech, multiple T34-85 call ins.
By the time I realized it was pure spam, I'd already selected my doctrine (Scavenge). The map was Langreskaya and that's my doctrine of choice for the long-range prowess of Jaeger Light Infantry and a lot of room for the Ostwind to move and kite. I was able to hold my own with my standard BO against Soviets (Sturmpio, 3 Volks, 2 JLI, Med Truck, ISG, raketen). Even managed to hold both fuels for a while. But as more and more Cons got upgraded with PPsH's, I started to lose ground. Got my Ostwind at 8CP and figured it was time to punish the spam, but between the Cons swarming the Ostwind with AT Grenades and others focusing down my pios (forcing them to retreat instead of repair), it rendered my Ostwind useless for the short period of time it was on the field before he called in his first T34-85, which was followed shortly thereafter by another.
I've been trying to figure out what I should have done differently. One big mistake was calling in a second Ostwind after I managed to take out the first two T34s when he got too aggressive with them. But wouldn't you know it, he had another one waiting...and another shortly after that. Even if I had gone T4 at that point, the Panther wouldn't be able to deal with his tanks. It's not so much the Con spam that was difficult to deal with, but the endless stream of armor thanks to no teching cost needed for the call-ins. By the end of the game, he'd manage to call in six T34-85s. Had I not chosen my commander too soon, maybe I could have spammed MG34s and choked him off the fuel...but 8 cons, mostly with PpSH's could have probably dealt with even 3 MGs without too much difficulty.
Has anyone had any success against this strat as OKW? |
this can work well if the american actually does build cars. if they dont, youre now a squad down against rifle spam, which already has an advantage over volks and sturms. thats the problem i see with okw early game. countering vehicles is a complete gamble. but if you wait til you see the m3/wc51 it may already be too late due to map control and/or squad wipes on retreat.
I mean build the raketen once you see a WC51, not before. A player building multiple WC's will usually build his first as his second unit and then harass with it, so you'll know it's there pretty quick. I've cancelled my second Volks in favor of a raketen when I've seen this. As for getting your raketen flanked, the idea is to position it aggressively (possibly in a building), but retreat at the first sign of a flank. |
So the USF player has sacrificed capping power by getting a quick WC51 or two, so it's okay to sacrifice some capping power yourself. As OKW, don't be afraid to get yourself an early raketenwerfer (like the second or third produced unit early). You should be able to take out the first WC easy as he won't be expecting any dedicated AT on the field that soon. If he's got a second, be aggressive with the raketen, you can always retreat it if caught out of position. Even if you don't manage to take out the second WC, he's probably being more cautious with it which is still a good thing for you.
When all is said and done, you're even in terms of early capping power, you've robbed your opponent of fuel which will slow his teching, and you have a unit that still has mid/late game utility (and you were probably going to get anyway), and maybe some vet (or at least some xp).

USF blobs with their ability to fire BARs on the move are a much bigger problem. Though I've found a good mix of units to deal with them after weeks of frustration trying to handle them with MGs. Two squads of Jaeger Light Infantry or Panzerfusiliers (preferably in cover), backed up by a Flaktrack, backed up by a support gun.
If the blob has zooks in it, focus them with the Jaeger/Fusiliers to wittle them down and keep them away from your flaktrack. Just to be safe, focus your flaktrack on the zooks once they're in range. All the while, the ISG deals more damage from afar (use direct fire, not barrage). In one game, I anticipated this after two previous blob rush attempts. I was completely ready this time and knew he would have to mass retreat, so I snuck my Puma up the flank into his base to get line of sight and dropped a mortar barrage on the retreat point and wiped out five low health squads.
Morale of the story...beating the blob is more satisfying than it is frustrating to lose to one.

It's hit or miss. Sometimes they save, sometimes they don't. Which kind of makes it more annoying when they don't. |
Another common bug- MG34 and MG42 setting up 180 degrees from the given orientation command. No idea what's causing it though, seems entirely random.
Thank god...it's not just me. I thought I was going crazy. So many times I've seen my MG getting flanked (if you can even call it that) and thought "Not only are they not pointing in the direction I told them to...they're pointing in the EXACT OPPOSITE direction".
Fix this ASAP! Good to know though...guess I need to keep closer tabs on my MGs for the time being. |
I'd like to see the BARs, Nades, and Zooks upgrades available on the unit panel (like all other unit upgrades), but only while the unit is in their base sector. I admit I like the idea of Riflemen not being able to "pop BARs" out of nowhere as that tactic could be exploited (more so than say, Volks "popping schreks" IMO). So I think they should have to be in their base sector to do it. It's just odd that this is the only faction that has to go "pick up" their upgrades.
Though it seems like a small thing, I wonder what effect this would have on balance as keeping track of retreated squads and managing their reinforcement, healing, and upgrades is not exactly a trivial task. |
In response to other's assessment of the Panther (as an explanation of USA's medium tank performance). In a typical OKWvUSA (or OKWvSov for that matter), the Allies have had an advantage in the mid-game due to being able to get their medium tank(s) out first. The problem I have with the Panther, is that the it's poor accuracy forces me to be more aggressive with it than I'd like to be. This always ends with it getting flanked and either destroyed or retreated back to my base for repairs. I've caught myself just hanging back with the Panther waiting for my opponent to push with their tanks, hitting them with shreks and raketen, and then chasing it down with my Panther to finish it off. But against patient players or those that play defensively once they've established a mid-game advantage, the Panther ends up being useless. |
Well if you have another match that you feel you unfairly lost because of industry then I would be happy to hear you out. But in this case you obviously found a way to beat your opponent. In my own experiences I have never seen industry truly pay off. It has obvious disadvantages and I only ever see it used in team games. So I will have to disagree with you.
Nothing to disagree with...it was just a question because I was surprised with how the armor just kept coming. I was really just trying to get opinions on the state of the commander to see if it was still considered strong or OP to get an idea if I should be ready to see more of it once people have it as a result of war spoils. |
