According to their OKW design philosophy you are support your mediocre basic infantry with other units like elites or vehicles. The same way Soviets do. Did I say they should be uber at vet 5? I said their Vet 5 should be at least 1.66 (or 1.25 according to relic) times as good as other main inf. And do you have a source on what OKWs design philosophy actually is? Because according to the original release media: "Brief Description: Volksgrenadiers are reformed from hardened veterans, recovering wounded and new recruits. They are potent frontline infantry for the OberKommando." Where do you read mediocre? Furthermore if OKW was meant to get their elite Inf like SU, they should be getting their Obersoldaten at 5 minutes (like Guards and Jesus troops) instead of 200 fuel into the game, where they get gibbed by tanks and rocket artillery. Because if you compare Volks vet to other standard inf (SI), A) Vet 5 volk aren't that much stronger than other vet 3 inf. B) In Mid game, where your vet 3 volk are facing vet 3 SI they are going to be pretty outclassed. (correct me if i'm wrong but the XP requirements are about the same) I think the crux of the matter is that the bonuses from vet five should amount to at least 166% as effective in comparison to other SI. Any lower and you are just diluting the bonuses that volk receive. You can see an example of the new OKW LEFG, the bonuses from vet 5 are worse than the bonuses that the OST LeFH. Furthermore In late game when you lose squads, Allied SI have an easier time getting up to peak effectiveness because a) their max vet requires less XP, and B) they can easily be equipped with x2 bars/1919s/brens to make up for their vet 0 and to boost their XP gain. IMO Volk vet should be reverted to before they were nerfed due to shrek blob being too effective. On the other hand the rest of OKWs unit's vet 5 bonuses feel strong and rewarding. In: COH2 Balance

Despite that ~~most~~ all weapon upgrades give more ΔDPS than both of the STG44s, some people have noticed that despite the increased DPS, due to the nature of the high ROF and low damage, it spreads its damage over all enemy models, compared to the Kar98s who, due to their higher bullet damage, kill models more often. Considering that the STG comes out around the same time as UKFs and USFs weapon upgrades, and is in all regards worse than them, make the STG a little lackluster. In: COH2 Balance

Yeah and you still get more ΔDPS from the BAR The Bar increases a rifle's dps by 7.2/2.7 The STG increases a volk's dps by 3.5/0.1, two volks would double it. The DPS of a BAR plus a grand far outclasses 2 volks with stgs. In: COH2 Balance

Are you sure about that? Because last time i checked the bar does 15 close and 4 damage far and the Volk STG does like 8 damage close and 0 damage far. So more than a 'bit' weaker In: COH2 Balance
