Dawn of War 3 was honestly Relic's best game at launch
Ok, I'll admit its been quite a long time since COH 1 came out and I have some serious rose-tinted nostalgia goggles when it comes to that game, so feel free to correct me on this. But I'm pretty sure it beat the fuck out of Dawn of War 3 when it comes to a 'successful' launch.
While the various factions felt OK in terms of units and options, the input lag in DoW 3 was absolutely horrendous and the the hero units were very boring and uninspired. It's cool if you liked it of course, but to me it felt like it had very little in common with any of the previous entries at all. I might be misremembering but didn't they completely water down/remove the cover system? Not to mention all of the shallow MOBA nonsense they tried to add. I get that they really wanted to innovate but it just didn't know what it wanted to be.
That said though, you and other people have voiced a lot of completely valid criticisms of 3. That list from Dirty Finisher for example, it brought up so many obvious 'why is this STILL an issue' issues that should never have made it past the testing phase. It definitely smacks of very rushed and unfinished game that just isn't really acceptable, given all the love and hard work from the people who made the original and then (eventually) coh 2, into a really great multiplayer RTS. |
Honestly is Company of Heroes actually worth saving at this point? All it is right now is pretty much a hollow brand - Ancestors Legacy was mentioned earlier and, whatever you may think of the game, it proved that other, smaller studios can pretty successfully emulate or even innovate on the formula and produce a fun, functional game. Relic right now is in the end stage of a Ship of Theseus situation, clearly a vast majority of the people making actual decisions at the company have no idea what makes Company of Heroes good or fun, and I suspect a large portion of them don't even play it.
The silence from the company and the fact that they can't even do a proper hotfix when it's desperately needed points to a critical failure at some end of the decision-making process internally. Right now everything looks like it's adding up to a Dawn of War 3-level scenario, and I think people should brace for the possibility that the studio straight-up won't finish the game. Refund it while you still can, if you can.
There's definitely a lot that needs fixing and balancing, but this is a little bit hysterical. Dawn of War 3 was an absolute dumpster fire. Whatever you think of it's issues, the game at least got more than decent reviews and it isn't a watered down MOBA. |
I honestly don’t know how long it’s going to take for the gravity of the situation to set in for people that played COH2 and then played COH3. COH3 is SO FAR behind in BALANCE/MECHANICS its insane.
Wow, when you lay it all out like that it's hard to argue. Devils advocate... perhaps it's because it was made in a different engine, by i'm assuming, a totally different team?
Ur completely right though, it is very strange that so many of these little details, lessons and fixes were ignored and not simply carried over. I still expect many of them to be fixed in time, but why the hell were so many allowed to exist when you only have to play the 2 previous iterations of the game to know why they needed to be changed/corrected. The medic thing in particular irritates me as well.

Guasto's are fun but arrive late and are susecptible to the above, perhaps even to a worse degree.
They definitely deserved the nerf. A lot more difficult to fit in now, but god are they fun to use against the right sort of short-range opponent. Just walking around eating about two enemy squads alive before they have to retreat. |
Well, DAK has no answer to snipers except yolo vehicle pushes. But more likely than not, you will lose your vehicles but they won't lose the sniper.
True, they have an inherent weakness for them, just like OKW did. It forces you to play very aggressively. Maybe that's the whole point, when your faction isn't allowed them and is based around vehicle play. |
Have fun getting bled to death by Paths + Sniper combo
Who me? Or DAK players in general?
I used to play a lot of OKW, but I've not really had too much trouble with paths/snipers in COH 3 yet. Snipers seem to be noticibly easier to kill with vehicles than they were in COH 2. |
1v1 perspective. At the moment:
Starting Panzerpioneer
Kradschutzen
Panzergren
Panzergren
-
Light support company:
HMG
Pak
250 call in bringing in either an ISG (AKA the Axis Pack Howitzer, thanks Aerafield) or Assault Grens, depending on enemy build.
I used to like calling in a Pak and then converting the 250 towing it into a mortar to counter support weapons as it saves a bit of manpower, but for the moment i've stopped trying to make 250s into anything useful. I think they are quite weak especially after the cost increase for their upgrades, the two lethality nerfs and the fact that they seem to get melted by blobs of infantry with just small arms fire, upgraded or not.
Occassionally follow up with a Stug if the opponent is very, very infantry heavy.
-
Then depending on map control, Mechanized Kompanie or the Panzerarmee Kommand. Mechanized generally only gets skipped if its going really well or if my opponent fucked up and lost a vehicle, etc.
-
All slightly tweaked and depending on the battlegroup of course. I know a lot of people understandably skip Panzergrens but I've been stubbornly using them. Haven't really touched the Bersaglieri battlegroup much yet either. I think the out of combat 'sprint' thing on a mainline is bullshit and I assume they are going to get nerfed. |
I agree with OP's post.
Also CoH players are older now and bitter / hard to please. Critics were a lot more lenient during coh 1 days, less competition too.
It can basically be summed up as 'This new thing is not exactly like the old thing that i loved!'
Despite the old thing recieving about 10 years of polish and lots of balance and refinement. People have short memories. |
Strange post... Are you saying that because this person is featured as a character in the campaign that you are worried that it might cause people to glorify him? Sadly, you'll probably be able to find a pretty dedicated community of idiots somewhere in the world who are willing to prop up pretty much any awful/evil person in history, even figures like Hitler and Stalin.
Relic probably chose him because he was widely regarded alongside Patton as one of the best generals of the war, though there's still a lot of debate about that amongst historians. Nothing to with his 'image' or Nazi apologists. |
Yup the Kradschützen, Mortar HT, Recovery Vehicle, Stuka and the 2.5 Tonne truck are the only vehicles that don't provide the CA bonus to Pgrens and Panzerpios.
Now you don't "have" to build a 250 from the beginning and can wait for 250 call-in after 6min or Flakvierling, especially on a campy map where the 250 can only attack frontally... but imo that requires some very cautios gameplay with the help from Kradschützen support which has a decent MG34 and amazing sight (built in spotting scopes).
The combat halftracks used to be okay but last patch Relic ninja nerfed them for whatever reason by increasing upgrade cost from 50 to 75 ammo.
Honestly just skip the combat HTs and just park the 250s in the background for CA, small flank recon and their medical supplies. The mortar HT is hot garbage compared to ISG anyway and doesn't provide CA as mentioned earlier, and the 2cm version is a meme in teamgames.
Thanks for the info Aerafield. I'll have to try the ISG a bit more, I must confess i've barely used it at all.
The Krad does seem to do a bit more damage than the 250, and even after upgrading the 250 with the autocannon there's not really a massive difference, for the cost. I know its not supposed to be some new equivilent of the old OKW Flak Halftrack but it'd be good for it find its niche, somewhere. At the moment i find it to be a bit of a meme in all gamemodes, tho i'm mostly just a 1v1 player.
Oh and what do we suppose are the chances of Relic making a helpful unit/unit ability wiki that stays up to date. Zero? lol. |
