When are the new commanders coming out?
I personally don't believe that they will fix it anymore; the ship has sailed. What I need are more AT armor call-in doctrines for my Soviet play. I use the 2 x IS-2 doctrines way too much.
The new 'Overwhelming Armor' doctrine for the Soviets looks handy as it has 'elite T-34/85s' and Reserve T-34s.
The Germans could use a doctrine that buffs infantry (infantry call-ins?) without costing fuel or munitions.
AS in...GOOD, scalable infantry (like an elite version of the grenadier squad with 6 man squads), not niche infantry like Ostruppen or assault grenadiers. |
I think the best way to use them is to supplement your regular units. Their advantage over conscripts is that they have good weapons (Ironic, I know), so 1 conscript squad + 1 irregular is fine.
I find them too weak (probably half health, like osttruppen) to fight German troops on their own. You can also ambush tanks and light vehicles with a suicidal partisan tank hunter. |
IS-2 is one out of two best Soviet tanks against the Panther period. It's cost ineffective against the panther, but it's the only tank that has armor stats that are greater than the Panther's pen stats.
So you use the IS-2 with the Zis guns and conscripts to even out the odds.
Dont use the IS2 on panthers, the strenght of the IS2 is that it can easily wipe entire squads while the panther is useless against anything but armor and vehicules.

With teching, it costs around the same amount of fuel to buy a call-in Tiger tank vs. 1 Panther or Brumbar. It costs more manpower to tech and buy the Panther/Brumbar though.
This is why people get tigers or Panzer IV(s) to Tiger in 1 v 1. |
You shouldn't rush SU-85's with your panthers if they have a trap set up (Zis, conscripts). Use the speed to flank and close in on them.
However, I've never had trouble with a single backtracking SU-85 after the SU nerf. The Panther's front armor is still good and once you are on the SU's flank, the SU-85 is yours.
The SU-85, with focus forward is very ungainly, and I find the vehicle w/o it ungainly as usual. It is also poor against AI, panzershrecks, panzerfausts (engine damage, becomes useless), and pak guns.
Against the SU, I actually prefer to use a pair of PzG w/ panzershrecks instead of pak guns or tanks. They hunt down SU's pretty well. |
I would have loved to see this dynamic, but it's too late:
Germans with smoke shells, 50 instead of 40 range, and 1.5- 2 times firing rate. No blitz.
Soviets with 40 range, rely on low cost and mass.
-------------
Historically correct, also:
The Panzer IV should be penetrated by the T-34/76 and SU-76 on all sides. Main gun should penetrate everything except IS-2/ISU-152.
The Panther's rear should be penetrated by the T-34/76 and the SU-76. Frontal is immune to everything except IS-2 and ISU-152. Main gun penetrates the frontal of everything except IS-2.
The Tiger's rear should be penetrated by the T-34/85 and SU-85. Frontal is immune to everything except IS-2 and ISU-152. Main gun penetrates frontal of everything except IS-2.
Notably, Tiger/Panther/Panzer IV should fire 2 x faster than IS-2/ISU, and 1.5 X faster than all other soviet tanks. |
The Panther was 're-buffed' after a big price nerf. It used to be almost 700 MP, 135 fuel or something like that. I personally thought this old price to be more fair. So the German player goes T4 with the knowledge that he'll be short an infantry squad for every panther purchase.
The core design defect I have with Coh2 has continued to be there since last year-
The developers decided to make the Soviets have great AI and the Germans to have great AT. I really don't like this intentional distinction as it creates too many gameplay conundrums. It makes the Germans bleed manpower too much, and it makes Soviet Armor weak against T4 and call-ins.
I would prefer if AI/AT were equal between the 2 factions and the developers focus on 'quality (German) vs. quantity (Soviet)'. But it's too late for that............ |
IME, there's no other tactic against the Tiger Ace. You have to meet his force with yours.
In practice, I usually have a pair of zis guns with a conscript squad. I'll buy a third. If I have a HMG, I will take this onto group 2. The conscripts try to at nade.
Group 1 will be the IS-2.
I do this routinely against regular tiger tanks. It may not destroy the tank but it will cause it to retreat. IS-2 bleeds german manpower and if I have a rocket truck, it will too. |
I agree, the inadequate Anti-tank ability of the T-34 76/85 combined with high AI is the key annoyance in the game. It makes German infantry weaker, and encourages their armor usage- which happens to exploit the soviet late game weakness. |
I find the SU-76 to be poor against tanks as it gets 2 shotted. I buy 1 or 2 for its barrage ability. The T4 has no AI tank, so I use the SU76 to support my SU85.
The barrage ability knocks out pak guns if I see them first, and both tanks benefit from the SU-85's focus forward and have 60 range.
A good place to use the SU barrage is to bomb directly on a position that's getting capped.
It's definitely under bought because it requires careful use. |
