The General Staff was strong until the failure of OP Typhoon. Their key strategic misstep was to believe that the SU would fall quickly and then they could devote their war economy to fighting the allies. When this proved to be false, they literally had to shift their war economy on the fly, which made the situation very inefficient well into 1942.
Hitler's faith in his generals fell apart in Russia and from then on, he increased his interference in strategy. By the fall of 1941, he fired the classic blitzkrieg leaders of Army Group South and the Chief of the general staff- a real watermark as he cleaned house. The Germans/Axis should seen as the underdog in WW2, that has to win through strategic trickery and leveraging their strengths & gambling rather than anything truly sustainable.
The German generals largely did well tactically and operationally into 1942. Afterwards they largely fell apart. The thing with bad strategy and strategic position is that it flows downward, and ruins all operations.
If you look at the course of the war, literally they lost every battle from late 1942 onward. Before that, they won most of their battles or performed well. In the eastern front, they were losing ground everywhere (North, Center, South) by early 1943. Ditto for North Africa.
A major strength of the nazis/soviets that is not discussed often (usually people focus on the negatives) is their ability to harness political will (sometimes literally by gunpoint) and attack in a way that is difficult for a western democracy. Their offensives have mechanics that push their combat manpower and risk tolerance to the limits, which gives them options that west. allied forces do not have.
I've read a great deal (maybe around 20) books on the topic, including war diaries.
The Axis had no business in the USSR. They lost as soon as they entered it. There was a brief 'opening' for a rapid victory in July 1941 and that's it.
The source of Axis combat power was strong 'blitzkrieg' strategic offensives. They were nothing without it, and Case Blue 1942 was the last strong (albeit flawed) blitzkrieg. They perform far worse in the defense.
With the Axis/Germans it was not so much about production but rapid and decisive operations early on in the war. 39-42 German combat power was largely through their panzer divisions and large numbers of well trained infantry with good tactical skills, not at all due to advantages from equipment or firepower. The key to ending the axis and ending strategic blitzkrieg was to devastate the german infantry arm and destroy german mobility (horses, vehicles), which was accomplished by Nov, 1942.
The Axis took around 1 million casualties on the Eastern Front by the end of 1941. They took 2 1/2 million by the end of Stalingrad ( Feb 1943). They took 5 million on the Eastern front (alone) by May 1944.
Just to let you know, some idiots are spoiling the ending on various twitch chats and in steam. I Just had someone donate money on a major hearthstone stream where he told the ending and it was even read out loud. Just so you know.
Luckily i was able to close the stream after after the first sentence, spoiled a lot nevertheless
Fo4 has set a high 'spiritual' bar due to its excellent marketing campaign. (compared to say, coh2, LOL)
The rabid hype, tie- in products, and media blitz is a prime example. This display at E3 2015 can be seen as an very effective set of theatrics and has keep a high level of mystery to the whole thing. After around 3 hours, I was just struck at the actual product itself vs. the impression-crafting.
graphics are overrated imo.
Skyrim which was released in 2011 has stunning graphics even for this day,if fallout gives the same quality graphics i'd be more than happy.
Besides if you're after the graphics u've picked the wrong game , it's about the story and the plot with bethesda , such addictive games .
Yeah you can jump in and out and its marked on the map.
+ the deathclaws are very, very tough- they take a great amount of punishment even when wearing the power armor and wielding a minigun. around 400-450 rounds to kill one.
It would be tough to kill them without the armor. I don't know if it's possible to lift a minigun without power armor.
With fo4, I got to say that it is odd that this highly hyped up game had been built on a dated engine. I saw the stream in high res (streamer was using ULTRA settings) and the graphics were still quite old looking.
Also from all the content I've seen (including the stream), the items, enemies, interface are mostly the same as FO3 or derived from old designs.
