they made some significant graphic design direction to make game look more fifty-ish which hide the old engine's flaws to an extent. like in bioshock 1 and infinite. their art direction was great, which made people care less about high res textures and all that. however, fo4 engine does show the age quite a lot.

i am a bethesda fallout fanboi.
i have never gamed like i did when i discovered fallout 3. i played it 4 times in a row and at the fifth time, i got bored of the starting quest so i didnt play for months.
i have seen hundreds of super mutants, raiders, brotherhood of steels, normal npcs, etc etc. and first thing i noticed when fo4 was announced at e3 was how different and organic even those main-line npcs were. raiders now have levels and different armours, mirelucks look freakin different and awesome, radscorpions acutely dig into the ground and attack you from below and shit.
not to mention ever creepy ghouls crawling through windows and falling down from high platform to just swarm you.
i see plenty of new designs which excites with expectations and old designs which excites me with nostalgia so i am super hyped. 4 more days.

The age of the engine shows most in the animations and the textures.

The power armor in the new game is more like an armored vehicle (when people shoot at you, the bullets bounce off)
Yeah you can jump in and out and its marked on the map.

It's charged by this battery cell that you put in the back, which depletes. (literally as you run you can see it going down)
Also, the armor plating falls off based on impact position (eg. the shoulder armor or leg armor may fall off after enough strikes )

+ the deathclaws are very, very tough- they take a great amount of punishment even when wearing the power armor and wielding a minigun. around 400-450 rounds to kill one.
It would be tough to kill them without the armor. I don't know if it's possible to lift a minigun without power armor.

That said "ugly and janky" pretty much sums up Fallout 1 & 2 and those are some of my favorite games ever. Here's to hoping they knock it out of the park, even though I will probably never touch it!

Skyrim which was released in 2011 has stunning graphics even for this day,if fallout gives the same quality graphics i'd be more than happy.
Besides if you're after the graphics u've picked the wrong game , it's about the story and the plot with bethesda , such addictive games .

The rabid hype, tie- in products, and media blitz is a prime example. This display at E3 2015 can be seen as an very effective set of theatrics and has keep a high level of mystery to the whole thing. After around 3 hours, I was just struck at the actual product itself vs. the impression-crafting.
graphics are overrated imo.
