I have played this game since it first appeared. The Germans used to be completely OP in such an obvious way.
Since then, they have buffed the Soviets a great deal until they are either equal or superior to the Germans in every category except Heavy Tanks in the anti-tank role. The is a biggy.
The T-34/85s remain too expensive to use against Panthers and Tigers. (need mark target and/or ram)
Soviet late game tanks continues to be an issue as only the IS-2, while a great tank, is cost ineffective against German heavy armor.
I personally would like to see another buff to the T-34/85 just to make it cost effective against Panthers and Tigers.
That is probably the last major thing I'd like for the game. Everything else has been gravy outside of the 2 OP commanders. |
When playing against Germans with the Tiger Ace, I spend almost all my manpower on Zis guns and try to get 2-4 if possible.
I usually have either SU-85 or IS-2. On rarer occasion, I may have an ISU-152.
I bind the tanks to 1 and the zis guns to 2.
Then I try to track down the Tiger Ace and throw this group of Zis guns at him first. I never use tanks against it first; always Zis. Ideally I have 3 or 4 zis guns pummelling it while my IS-2 (with its good frontal armor and hp), shoots its rear and scoots backward to reload.
Then I try to trap it from the rear with the tanks with long range shoot & scoot shooting.

I am one of the few players that don't make P4s....I bite the bullet and go Panther, Brumbar.
The IS-2 is definitely not OP if the German player goes T4. It costs 240 fuel and it is not cost effective when fighting German heavy armor (Tiger and Panther). A well Handled panther, which costs 95 IIRC less fuel will maul IS-2's in direct confrontation which is not a good sell for the IS-2.
If a german players insists on going T3, the IS-2 will wreak them.
The Tiger I will beat a IS-2 in a duel, no problem. The IS-2 fires too slowly and the Tiger's armor & hp is higher.
The IS-2's strength is making the Germans bleed manpower and clearing out the Pak guns. It's a bit of a mixed weapon, expensive, strong AI and blasts away medium armor but is overall not cost effective against heavy armor.
The Tiger tank ime is fine when it's the first tank you call in (and if you don't do any teching) as you can catch the soviets with their pants down.
Otherwise, they are too slow and can get ambushed pretty badly if they're too far forward. Compared to the Panthers, they are overall inferior by late game.
My preferred heavy tank combo is Panther + Brumbar (love it). I use the Brumbar to bleed manpower, destroy zis, and stun soviet tanks. The Panther kills the tanks. |
The Tiger Ace is a slow/big target for munitions strikes and rocket barrages. |
For me its precisely the stug and the Panzer IV that are the problem. They should have no turret top gunners. While some the later models of the Stug III had a MG mount, the MG was considered a defense weapon that should be used sparingly due to the exposed position, and only 600 rounds were carried.(compared to the 2,500 rounds carried by the Panzer IV)
Anyway, the SU-85 has no top MG, and neither does the T-34 so the Germans tanks/AG getting this is immersion-breaking for me. |
Another non-doctrinal way: Get penals to lob a satchel charge (340 damage,1000 penetration) on its flanks, and then retreat them before the tiger kills the squad in two shots...........rinse repeat
With 2,500+ health it would take several goes at it, and a ton of munitions. |
The only non-doctrinal, cost effective way I can think of is mines, AT nades, and a very major Zis ambush from the flanks. A 'pincer move' from 2 sides. At least 3 or 4 of them since the Tiger ace can 2-3 shot most things. Then supplement this with what SU-85s you have and use them to shoot up its flanks.
If you have a T-34 (s), use them to ram the tiger ace.
|
Yeah attrition...when the Tiger Ace, with 50 range, knocks out SU-85s in two shots. heh heh. |
This is a primary German perk but I find that they break the immersion and buff tank/assault gun AI unnecessarily since the T-34s and the SU=85 do not get them.
In actuality, the 'turret top gunner' did not exist. It was a hull MG removed and installed on top as anti-aircraft protection during road marches. Firing the thing like a rambo against ground targets was a good way for the tank commander to get shot in the chest.

Yea, it is still a bit underpowered in my view. While it is 'cheap' in manpower compared to a panther, it costs nearly the same amount of fuel per unit.
In a vacuum, you might end up fighting a pair of Panthers with your pair of T-34s (while you save up fuel for the next pair...)and marked target/guards support is essential.
This means that your manpower savings isn't that great of an advantage because you have to store at least 120 munitions for a successful engagement. |
