I've noticed that as well. Maybe 60-70% of the time they go T3 and heavy armor call-in. however, they always get into trouble by late game as they're stuck with T-34s against heavy tanks (usually tigers).
I see the elite players doing T3 as a way of ending the game before the 30-40 minute mark.
As far as soviet T4 goes, I use all 3: SU-76, SU-85, and Rockets.
The SU-76 is usually the first thing I build, and I use it to support my pair of zis guns or infantry.
SU-76 is basically my AI armor.

My key complaint (and I will make a thread about this later) about the game is the fact that the Soviet heavy armor is rather defensive. It's defensive due to their cost effectiveness.
German armor is more offensive.
I don't agree with this design choice. The developers could have made German and Soviet armor equally offensive and defensive overall.
Even when I am using the IS-2 or ISU-152, I still need to have a Zis team (2 x zis ) supported by 1 conscript or 1 HMG. This makes my advance slow and prodding, as I cover the valuable heavy tanks with the Zis guns. The Zis guns, likewise, get covered by the AI ability of my tanks.
When playing as German with heavies, I don't need paks. I often just get 2 panzershreck squads. This and G43 grenadiers gives the tank and infantry group a fast offensive edge as the anti-tank guns slows the advance down.
The Zis guns are worse in AT than the pak yet when playing as Soviets they are absolutely essential buys. When going t3 soviet, without Zis guns you are in trouble. |
I actually use stugs if I am forced to go T3. The stugs are much more effective than p4s at destroying armor but are poor AI (cheaper, fast fire rate, better pen than p4, 50 range, and it eventually gets stun).
They are best in pairs and can hold their own against SU-85s on a cost basis. A pair can also maul KV-1s (while KV-1s maul P4s) This is the key reason I like stugs, as they can destroy SUs and heavy armor better than P4s. However, stugs need infantry support to deal with conscripts w/ at nades and Zis guns.
The ideal place to use a pair of stugs is on the defensive and in an obvious place like where you need to hold such as the middle of the map. |
Shocks remind me of Assault grenadiers. They're good at one thing only and aren't scalable. However, I find the smoke very useful, as it unpins infantry that gets caught in HMG fire. |
Overall, I still reject the T-34/76. It's fine against German T3 but if the German brings out tigers and heavies, the T-34/76 is a waste.
Functionally speaking, I think of it as a light tank rather than a medium tank.
I don't go T3 with Soviets ever. I jump right into T4 (SU-76, SU-85, and Rockets) and IS-2/ISU-152 doctrines.
The T-34 is not worth the risk. When I play as German, I feel a sense a relief that I am fighting T-34s and not SU-85s.... |
I use the same principles when it's 1 v 1 or even 4 v 4 although the resources I have and losses I suffered may be different.
So with lower resource situations, I buy Panther, Brumbar or Brumbar, Panther. In higher resource situations I aim at getting: Panther, Brumbar, Panther, rocket carrier. The idea is to always have 1 panther, 1 brumbar at least and bind them to 1 and 2.
With Tigers, it's Tiger, Tiger, rocket carrier at most.
I like using luftwaffe supply doctrine to get extra fuel.
--------------
What I don't like about the Tiger is its slowness and difficulty in getting out of ambushes. By the time you get out, the Tiger usually has lost a good chunk of its HP.
IF the other player knows that you have a tiger: Typically with 1 tiger you get attacked by a pair of Zis, 1 SU-85 firing with focus forward, and conscripts with AT nades. Or 2-3 zis and conscripts with AT nades.
The Panther, on the other hand, can quickly get out the line of fire (preferably with blitz or smoke) to flank the SU and avoid the Zis guns. The Brumbar can quickly 2 shot Zis and infantry & can stun tanks for 5 seconds. |
Also, the '2 tiger' tactic isn't as potent as it seems compared to 1 panther and 1 brumbar with another heavy tank or rocket carrier coming.
It takes half your pop cap, and the slow tigers are meatshields without the shoot & scoot shock effect of the brumbar (vs infantry) and panther (vs armor). While you can use the Panther/Brumbar alone, with tigers you really need the rocket carrier to help with the inadequate AI.
So you have 2 tigers that can only do well if they're fighting t-34s or lower. A good player can kite tigers with their SU-85s and force them to retreat or leave. or destroy them. |
Pzg are great, and stomp infantry. But they are a terrible counter to 'Shock troops' because shocks have very high armor. shocks are weak far away but devastating up close.
Countering shock troops with german infantry:
-Use HMGs.
-flamethrower pioneers
-LMG or preferably, G43 grenadiers
-if you're using elite troops, use the stun grenade. |
After a lot more experience, I find the new T-34/85 to be not buffed enough even with marked target. When playing as soviet Guards motor, it is still essential to have a a pair of Zis nearby.
Usually one can get 2 x t-34/85 but not the 4 x T-34/85 that is needed to tackle on more than one panthers and tigers.
I would personally prefer if it was raised in fuel cost and buffed to the SU-85's gun but with a range cut. So 40 range, 170 pen, 160 damage. ROF is fine.
The increase in fuel cost could be close to the Panther's for each tank. So same MP, 290 fuel. |
I actually have more games as German than Soviet, and I play both at a 60:40 split.
You must read between the lines. The 'heavy tank' problem the soviets have is bigger than say, the differences between mortars which is relatively marginal. Heavy Tanks are game-changing and #1. This cancels out a lot of German disadvantages.
The German relies a lot on flexible synergy, speed, and medium/heavy tanks and not raw unit strengths. German tanks have 3rd MGs, they outclass non-doc. soviet tanks typically. Defensive smoke and blitz is a huge advantage. They have panzershrecks, which is a big advantage if used well.
Panthers and P4s are the best and most cost effective vehicles in the game. Brumbars are also highly effective. The Panther is a tank destroyer with a turret and high speed. Brumbars annihilate infantry and zis guns.
Due to the T-34/85's weakness against tigers, panthers, and elefants, I have largely secluded my doctrinal use to IS-2 and ISU-152 doctrines for months.
I use Soviet Industry, Shock Rifle or Armored Assault, or either one of the 2 x ISU-152 doctrines.
I don't even use Guards Motor much because I don't have faith in the T-34/85 in pure anti-tank actions. They are solidly countered by panthers and tigers even with marked target and ram. The german tanks often have smoke, which frustrates things. The trade off is not worth it as it is not always possible to get 4 x T-34/85s onto the field. I still need to employ my pair of zis to even out the odds.
For German, I use Luftwaffe support, Elite Troops, and Jaeger Armor or mechanized (the one with the artillery gun).
