Just because the British army in real life used it doesn't mean its not a bad design choice for a game icon unit insignia. Since when did real life designs matter anyways, should we swap out obersoldaten signs with swastikas too?
Bad example, because swastika is forbidden to use. We are speaking here about legal stuff, aren't we?
Real life matter since this game, in terms of design, based on WW2 setting, and you have to accept that. All listed below symbols are based on real symbols as well, and none of them was created by me or other members of the "UI team":
Also, the main goal of shieldsymbol - be UI indicator, which helps you and your enemy understand, which unit is on the screen or which unit are you gonna call-in. From this point of view, this shieldsymbol clearly shows you, that there is infantry section, equipped with SMG.
Custom commander portraits which while nice aren't in line with rest of the designs, don't get me started on how there were perfectly fine unused portraits that were last minute disregarded in favour of custom ones resembling some of the community.
These are just some of the type of content creation that has drastically detracted from the polish of the game, and that the game feels increasingly like a half baked player mod. 2 years ago was around about the time mod team went from tweaking numbers of the game to actively creating content. Don't get me wrong I like new mod content but it should be opt in and not a forced replacement for vanilla while decreasing the finished product feel of the original game.
If you look at commanders, you will notice, that they are not standardized since 2013. I've proposed my work to make situation better - it was rejected due to low priority, but it still there.
I'd like to also see a fixup for singleplayer. Alot of features that were removed or tweaked for multiplayer have really borked the singleplayer campaign. Most of the formations, squad-ai, weapon balancing and even some abilities are either broken or missing entirely.
Glad to see you back! You are right, singleplayer need polish as well, and ToW too. They were abandonned for to long. I am not speaking about adding new content, just to make it work as intended. But there should be somebody, who ready to take the responsibility and do it.
One thing that has been greatly overlooked is tooltip accuracy. Besides obvious typos, there are many commanders, intel bulletins, unit descriptions, upgrades, abilities etc. that are wrong, at times being even empty!
It would be easy to identify them, make a list and fix them. I would gladly contribute.
As they are right now, they make the game look very unpolished, while at the same time making it hard to new players to get started.
To save your power, i am preparing the sheet with text issues. We can cooperate. My goal right now is:
- Mark all issues, where several things using the same text strings
- Mark all issues, where absolutely no text and no NoKey error
- Mark all issues, where NoKey exists in default locfile
I can give you access and you will add section with typos, outdated information and etc. I didn't do it by myself, because already maintaining fixed localization in russian, so i don't want to do the same job twice in english.
Thanks for the reply. Your comment definitely adds more credibility to this decision. But I'm afraid it will still be misunderstood by lots of people who are not familiar with military history that well. After all, it's still out of the line with the rest of the game, which tends to cling to it's own "distilled" aesthetics, rather than being overly historically accurate. I just think that it's wrong to add something that requires going to forum and asking questions about it to be properly appreciated.
Another thing is with Assault officer and Forward logistics glider. The former still has parachute on his portrait and decorator, although he is not an airlanding officer anymore, which raises questions inevitably. The latter still has airlanding officer's icon on it's portrait, even though it doesn't spawn airlanding officer anymore. Not that I imply that you guys might have overlooked it - I am sure you have put some consideration into this, just can't help but to share my thoughts on the matter.
I see, actually, there is several people who said they dislike this desicion, so maybe it will be changed in the future.
About "airlanding" officer and glider. Not all UI changes were applied to the patch, here is the full list, you can find here mentioned officer and glider fixes as well. Probably more will be added with the hotfixes.
Also totally not a bug, but new ukf assault and tank hunter sections decorators are out of the line with the rest of the game. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to leave double chevron for AS and add, say, a grenade image above tank hunters chevron than just slap "smg" and "at" inscriptions on them?
Hello, and thank you for the feedback! In the beginning, we were thinking about double chevrons as well, but decided to stop on this concept due to historical aesthetic.
P.S. We tried out variant with grenade on the top as well - it doesn't look well, that's why it was one of the first to be scrapped.
I really don't like how the assault and tank hunter sections have 'smg' and 'at' written in their symbol. Not only this is problematic with localization, but also no other squads are doing it in vanila. Instead they usually have a symbol of the weapon they use (think of assault grenadiers using mp40 or cavalry riflemen using swords ). The old icons were much better imo (at nade and double V) and more readable.
Previously AT section doesn‘t have shieldsymbol at all and was using it from regular IS. These new shieldsymbols are historically accurate,
P.S. Assault grenadiers are bad example, their shieldsymbol is exception, no other shieldsymbol in the game have weapons like that.
P.S.S. If there will be huge number of complains about these symbols, we will create another concept for doctrinal Infantry Section
