That was Volkssturm, not Volksgrens.
Volksgrens were pretty much whatever was left from other divisions + wounded soldiers.

It's a bit of both. Volksgrenadier divisions for a considerable part did consist of new recruits that would've been considered too young or too old for an ordinary draft, but not as extreme as the Volkssturm.

Early Cold War era is the most I could handle.

I'd rather see CoH3 based on early WW2 where factions like Italy and Japan wouldn't feel out of place. Could give it some more emphasis on infantry gameplay, like coh1, to make the game feel fresh again.

Changing a new Company of Heroes game from a WW2 setting to anything else would be an unrecoverable mistake.

I love the coh series and the ww2 setting, but I would still play the crap out of a new coh with a more modern setting

Vietnam or cold war gone hot would be fun and still hold the Coh basic gameplay/charm.

Guided misses wouldn't be in mass, Lavs, Humvee (light armor) would be useful, MBTs with different core aspects, introduction on helos (transport, scout, heavy), flash bangs, fast ropes, shotguns?, gas masks?, napalm, tow at guns?.

There's lots of stuff that you can translate over.
Lots of a symmetry as well depending on the years they put it but a possible draw up of an LAV would imply 1983 at earliest.

Edit: Don't forget we could have killer soundtrack as well!

Invised offtopic posts and corresponding replies. This thread is about CoH3 being potentially a modern warfare game, not political ideologies.

Changing a new Company of Heroes game from a WW2 setting to anything else would be an unrecoverable mistake.
Marketing is everything.

CoH2: Eastern Front was not a mistake, it was spearheaded by bad marketing, Relic confirmation bias/logical fallacies and bad writing/narrative design that did not have the same "Band of Brothers" vibe as CoH1.
Wolf Kahler is the CoH2 announcer from BoB so the Relic audio team had the right ideas to make a faithful sequel.

Rather than learning from mistakes Relic threw the baby out with the bathwater and went back to the Western front.

https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/

Making a faithful WW2 sequel is not the same as making a "spin-off sequel" or entire new IP.
DoW2, Homeworld 2 and CoH2 are legitimate good games, but bad sequels.
DoW2:The Last Stand (cooperative survival mode) arguably had the potential to become a new IP which Relic worked on as "Project Atlas".
DoW2 was more a spin-off sequel to CoH1 than a faithful sequel to DoW1 fans.
Homeworld: Cataclysm (Barking Dog Studios) and Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak (Blackbird Interactive studio) are good spin-off sequels not created by Relic.
I played many games with HW1 vets and I know many that was not happy with HW2, so this shit has been going on for many years.
Imagine if BBI had called Homeworld Deserts of Kharak for HW3.

I believe that was one of the reasons Sega Europe wanted the DoW+CoH surveys to determine how fragmented the fan base was.
The danger of calling "spin-off sequels" DoW3 or CoH3 is that it creates false fan expectations.
Fans in general, don't do well with big changes.

@mrjade @12ozMouse Hey guys, I'm trying to be as transparent as I can here but I can't reveal new info on upcoming projects. What I can tell you is that both are being developed very differently for Relic and there is a lot of positive change afoot specifically around community consultation, user research, and early playtesting.

Compare this to the two recent job announcements (production & marketing) that are interconnected with Relic Game Director building a brand new team/project.

CoH spin-off sequels and entire new IP have room for change and target new audiences.
If Relic/Sega expand the franchise to Cold War or Sci-fy (Star Wars/Halo) then they have to get the name right along with good marketing + community feedback.
But if Relic/Sega mess up then CoH could end up like DoW with a fragmented fan base. So yes, I do agree it's a risky move.

I fully agree with this, CoH2's marketing and their portrayal of the Soviet are completely at-odds with each other. The marketing was a favourable portrayal of the Soviets, which also drew in a large Eastern audience, which then felt betrayed when they played the campaign which is unfortunately seems to be a Cold War era NATO interpretation of the Eastern Front. Not to mention the Great Red Army is protrayed as being staffed mostly of Conscripts and Penals, with a handful of Guards or Assault troops on the side.

Reliс even took real historical dates and did everything wrong:
October 3, 1941, Mtsensk mission. The conscripts are defended Mtsensk, then we get a bit of the Guard and the T-34 counterattack.
But on October 3, 1941, to protect Mtsensk, 6,000 soldiers with cannons, mortars and 4 T-37s of the 10th and 201st airborne brigade were transferred by air. Part of the airborne troops landed under fire anti-aircraft guns and artillery. Together with the 4th Tank Brigade, they stopped the German offensive.
The Airborne Forces of 1941 were excellent-trained and armed soldiers, they were fully armed with self-loading rifles, machine guns and submachine guns.

After Mtsensk, it was possible to make a mission in which you play as the best tank ace of the Anti-Hitler Coalition who served from the start with the 4th Tank Brigade and took part in the Mtsensk battle, after the battles with this brigade the Germans wrote in their reports about the superiority of the T-34.

CoH fanbase was fragmented when people finally got to play CoH2. I do enjoy both games, both have the same name, but different feel. Same same, but different, but still same. :snfQuinn:

If anyone is interested in the new SEGA financial summary of 2019 you can find it here:

https://www.segasammy.co.jp/english/ir/library/pdf/settlement/2019/201903_4q_siryo_2019426_final_e.pdf

Maybe someone can get some info out of it. The only thing that i found was the fact that SEGA had no COH3 in coming titles in and fter 2020/3.

No big changes in goals except this;
1) Sega gives up on major mobile game investments and/or free-to-play.
Plans to re-allocate resources to focus on physical package sales and favorable digital market.

Blizzard is Shadily Deleting Dislikes | Diablo Immortal's YouTube Uploads

and this;
2) TL;DR: TBA CoH IP expanding to console
For some hints read this;
Former Relic studio head joins Sega & CoH3:

http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/news/a382937/company-of-heroes-relic-entertainment-open-to-a-console-version/
Relic Entertainment is "open" to the idea of Company of Heroes on a console.

General manager Alex Peters said if the studio can find a way to bring the series outside of PC it will "do it".

Sega PC games are mostly digital sales of steam.
Physical package sales = console.

As for 1)
In 2017, Sega Europe gets new mobile game boss, Christopher Bergstresser to spearhead this mobile expansion.
He left after only 4 months and later replaced by Gary Dale. A PC/console focused, executive leader.

Sega Europe announces ex-Rockstar COO Gary Dale as new president, June 2018:
https://www.mcvuk.com/sega-europe-announces-ex-rockstar-coo-gary-dale-as-new-president/
Sega Europe boss departs after four months, December 2017:
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2017-12-12-sega-europe-boss-departs-after-four-months
Dale departed Rockstar and Take-Two back in 2009 and has spent the intervening years investing in and managing private equity firms. He commented:
“SEGA is an iconic business with a fantastic heritage and I am relishing the challenge of stepping back into a full-time operational role within the games industry. SEGA Europe collaborates with its owned studios in a unique way for a publisher of its size and the opportunity to be a part of that and grow the business out into other areas is an exciting one.”

At first glance, for Sega Europe this was a positive. Rockstar is a good company and to bring Gary Dale out of "retirement".

By god, they're going to bring all of their RTS franchises to console if Iron Harvest is succesful.

May God help us all and shield us from this plague called "consoles".

Alternative is death of any kind of non indie RTS games.
I wish we had any kind of data on population and recurrence of Halo Wars 2.

I am fine with new settings. This is just how nowadays game titles work.

BTW, I think Total War series did greatly on changing settings. Maybe Relic could learn something from CA?

The problem is not with the players: people want a RTS. The problem is in the developer / publisher - they want minimal costs and super profits, and this is why we see an army of unnecessary battleroyal: for some miraculous reason, this boring genre was an overhype. And only the lazy did not want to jump on the hype train. Large Publishers have come up with the concept of a game service: minimal content that will be stretched to sell season passes, microtranslation skins - RTS is not the best genre for such a concept.

RTS - on the console, it's RTS castration. I play Halo Wars and this is a very primitive strategy.

Halo Wars 2 was slated by most Halo Wars veterans plus M$ kinda fucked up by limiting it to the Xbox and Windows Games Store severely so I don't think it'd be an accurate estimate on how well a modern RTS game would do on consoles.

Judging by the money Iron Harvest got in it's Kickstarter and by how many people know about I think it'd might be a more realistic accurate.

I didn't even know about the first Halo Wars before I saw some of it's stunning cinematics on YouTube basically so I have no doubt that most of it's players were just Halo fanboys at least for the most part.

I heard that Army Men RTS was a pretty popular Play Station 2 RTS game.

My major concern is that console games are dumbed down in both graphics and gameplay and most are ported unoptimized to PC and then slammed on Steam for doing it. One personal example I can give of L.A. Noire and I had to find god knows where tweaks to unlock the FPS lock so I could get more than 30 FPS and the game still ran horribly but I would say that the gameplay was very decent and it was just sad to see it having such bad reviews because someone was lazy and thought let's just save a few bucks from optimization.

I just want to point out that Microsoft is making a big push towards supporting keyboard + mouse on console, and trying to cover more of the hardcore/pc gamer audience. CoH3 is going to be coming out in a few years along with the XboX 3, I don't think it's far fetched to assume they have some deal worked out with microsoft to try and have CoH3 be some sort of XboX console exclusive (with PC of course) to push adoption of the XboX 3 as a more general computer gaming replacement. We already know they are working with microsoft on AoE 4. I'm not gonna shit on them for pushing it on console until I see how that affects the game.

I'd love a CoH in modern times! However, Relic is supposedly working on Age of Empires 4 still despite their radio silence on the subject, so it is possible that this is a model for that game. This is assuming, of course, that Age of Empires 4 will go up to modern times like Rise of Nations.
