I don't understand what all of this is about.
The MG42 craziness is SERIOUSLY purely psychological. ALL they got, is an extra 80HP. The Maxim still has 160 HP, and can be reinforced on the fly by Conscripts.
In all other aspects, the MG42 is EXACTLY the same as before. Soviets have at least 3 different ways, in the early game, to deal with MG's. If the Ostheer spams MG42's, snipers still rape them. Put that sniper into the Scout car... STILL rapes them.
HEY! The MG42 lasts so much longer against buildings now! Well, if the building is SMALL, use a molotov (the units are tightly packed = more damage). If the building is large (Church), use a Satchel Charge. Only 45 munitions, you deny the Ostheer that building, and if he doesn't exit that building pronto, the entire building goes down. 45 munitions to kill 240 manpower? Yes please. |
The RTS genre suffers from being too special.
PC Gaming, as a whole, is on decline. PC specific titles are rare as it is, most of the other games survive properly because of multi-platform support.
As you can probably figure out, the RTS genre suffers from its input, mostly. Nobody has been able to properly translate an RTS game to a console. Halo Wars did a good attempt but nothing mind-blowing.
Halo managed to translate FPS into the console world (which began all the crazy FPS monotonous streak).Until the industry can figure out a way to translate it into consoles, or the PC market rebounds to the top again, we won't see it surge.

I still think people are missing the point. Relic didn't "promise" us anything, so you haven't been lied to (individual Relic employee statements don't count). Maybe the game didn't live up to your expectations, I'll give you that. That's an opinion though, and you are totally entitled to it.
You probably won't get your 60 bucks back, but you can trade games on Steam (Trading Beta).

Very good patch overall.
I don't mind if the Moirtar Ht remain untouched, it is after all: an insant call in. Better survivability than a regular mortar, far more mobility. Incendiary rounds. It sort of balances out a little bit.
As for strafing run and HTD, patience. They said its coming. |
The problem is NOT the number of men. It has never been. It seems that way, because defensive factors against small arms fire is too big. Armor, Damage, and accuracy.
IMHO, all shots against infantry should ALWAYS penetrate, unless they are specialized infantry. Panzergrenadiersm Guards and Shock troopers should have decent armor rating, but not too high as to waltz out of cover into enemy fire (you've got smoke for that!).
large man crews do improve survivability, no doubt about that, but its mostly a pain in the neck for snipers, not infantry. If infantry had less armor to begin with, and perhaps a bit of extra damage, enemy crews would fall FAST, regardless of numbers.
A single mortar round in the center of an enemy crew, 3 man or 6 man, is enough to ruin that crew's day.
The problem is small arms fire. Now granted: Relic can't simply go in and tweak everything into oblivion. There's an art to it, and they have to be very careful not to overcompensate. |
Interesting analysis, OP.
We have to remember, that there are dozens of variables interacting with each other to consumate a battle. Positioning, cover, movement, distance, critical hits, support, LOS, etc.
These should always be taken into account in a laboratory setting: that is, ideal conditions. Skill is always the largest determining factor in a firefight, since it reduces the luck factor.
What is skill? It is turning an otherwise fair fight, into an unfair one for your opponent. |
scout car is nice now. with or without upgrade does about the same damage to infantry (key it to keep it outside AT nade range and have a gren or something pushing on a flank) upgrade seems to give no increased damage except armor pen so it can hurt light vehicles.
i almost always buy it now for early harass and scout
just tested it against an AI for testing purposes. It indeed does seem to do less damage per burst, but hitting more consistently, without it being a Pe armored car. I like it so far.

Anyone know if the mortar changes affect the Mortar HT? The patch only lists the 84cm mortar... |
Dark Blade worked hard for it. He deserves to do whatever he wants with that hard work.
As for the future... someone motivate/bribe cr4wler please. |
Its not an insane change, imho. It does mean german crews are far more reislient to molotovs and stuff, but here's the catch:
Germans still have no equivalent. If I put a Maxim inside a building early game (say, a cutoff or munitions point), there is literally very little you can do to kick me out of it. Sure, you can get a flamer (I just delayed your Flamer HT and potentially disrupted your munitions for fausts), and my maxim WILL kill your flamer before it kills my Machine Gun.... you'll dance around the house and kill it maybe, with good micro...
Meanwhile, my troops took the rest of the map.
As a Soviet you can still molotov those guys or satchel them (you can get penal battalions VERY early).
Snipers, for both sides, are not worth the investment that early on... |
