Really, I loved how they did it in Eastern Front Mod where you progressively upgraded your engineers to give them body armour and other stuff. I wish they had done that in CoH2 but obviously that'd be not possible now.
I wonder if an alternative AT weapon for shocks would be for every time they killed an enemy squad, they'd receive a one use only Panzershrek. Interesting mechanic and it'd represent what did happen where as the Soviets advanced they picked up tons of Panzershreks.
@ Someguy
Shock Armies as you say did exist and under them obviously would be shock troops, but they would come under the Guard Rifle Support doc (or whatever the one is with Con PPSHs, Arty and guards is called). Engineer Sappers IIRC correctly were separate units which would be attached for urban combat. |

I've enjoyed the kinds of missions which aren't possible in a Comp Stomp or Multiplayer. The Vs AI stuff holds no interest to me, but things like Brody Tank War was great fun with a friend. |
Personally I'd take the PTRD for non-doctrinal AT upgrades...
Regarding someone saying Shock troops didn't exist, the unit as it is portrayed graphically did exist, they were assault engineers with SN-42 body armour and loaded to the gunnels with AT grenades, Flamethrowers, SMGs, LMGs demo charges etc. VCoH's Eastern Front mod is the most accurate portrayal of them. |
Hmm... I played with this character today, totally crappy play, spammed elite troops doc with vet, then 10 VPs before the end of the game he charges this massive panther + TA force into our base. Didn't change anything.
Didn't see anything bad from him, but then I was on the opposite side... |
I sense we just need a few more units for Soviet maybe...? Maybe I'm wrong but do Germans have more unit variety than Soviets...? |
One of the biggest flaws in the game is how Soviets have no bunkers and Germans do, it's something I've been up in arms against since the beta and nothing has been done. It's ridiculous. |
Except that the KV-1 was long gone by 1943-44 having been replaced by the KV-1s (which was just as bad vs German armour) and the IS and KV chassis were being equipped (in small amounts) with the 85mm gun. The IS-85 and the KV-85 weren't bad they just were stop-gaps and occupied an inconvenient position of the RKKA transitioning between the KV and the IS series.
Also, the KV-85 is dead simple to model, IIRC it's just plonk a T-34-85 turret on the KV Chassis.
OT: T3 is just not good enough to me in all respects. It gets countered by T3 easily (P4s and STuGs, even Ostwinds if they're vet) and there is no contest with T4. Something needs to be added to T3 and I cannot understand why the T-34-85 isn't an upgun like in VCoH. Instead its doctrinal which is just silly. A heavy tank though in T-3 might be an alternative and something like the KV-85 wouldn't go amiss. Something with armour which isn't doctrinal is needed for the Soviets because currently they get nothing whilst the Germans can get speed and armour and punch all at once. It's just silly really. |
Pgrens IMO are okay but the shreks are silly, their range needs to be toned down a fair bit, it seems to me they have the same range as tank guns, which basically means they are walking death machines to tanks. Plus they are pretty accurate as well. It's silly seeing all these tank running back in panic to 4 guys with shreks. The range needs to dropped a good deal IMO. PGs are okay but with troops train they are ridiculous early on. To me the thing which needs changing the most are the shreks, or there needs to be a toning down of their DPS vs inf if they take shreks so that countering the shreked pgrens with inf is more effect. |
Actually it´s still unrealistic. With a 20mm cannon or a high rate of fire MG you could achieve this. But definitely not with a DP and its small magazine. Will it disturb the crew? Of course, but nothing they can´t simply shrug off. 20mm guns however will make you bleed from your eyes and ears - but even that takes some time.
Thus I also think the idea of guards buttoning tanks is bullshit, but it´s ingame already. So what can one do anyways?
It´s silly to see a Panzer IV stop while guards sit directly on the road in front of them. Every sane Panzer IV driver would just knock those guys over.
Any other suggestions for stopping blitzkrieging German tanks...? |
