We can't talk about it, but in my opinion the balance isn't a concern for most, and it will always be a conversation point, new bugs/balance holes will always be found, what matters is how Relic responds and how quickly.
Just wait for the 24th. Or when the NDA is finally lifted (never). |
I've got to agree with this.
Instead of a bang, NDA lifting, final day of streams and excitement before launch, its ended with a whimper, everyone silenced, almost uncomfortably. Look at the BF hardline beta - people are talking, and while its negative, there is TALK - COH2 is generating nothing, no headlines, no news. The unit profiles are great if you want to see screenshots, and hear some high level design vision. Why not show them off as part of the army? Make people start think about their "favourite commander" or "favourite build order".
But this silence... we're a week from Release. If the beta isn't here today, it will just be the classic glorified demo for a weekend before release, no build up, no anticipation. Feedback will fall to the wayside because "there's no way this can make it in for the final version". The timing on this is off so badly.
This news about a secret, secret alpha forum also has me worried. Do we pander to the egotistical "pros" that much now? Sure some of them are nice, but they put themselves before the greater good - that's why they are top of the ladder. That said, the stuff said on forums is enough face palm material for life.
I don't want to tell Relic how to run a PR machine, but I can at least say I don't feel it much at the moment.
Community engagement is at an all time low, with no talk about the expansion or its changes and improvements. The NDA, and the leaks, are because its such an awful way to run things nowadays. Big games have their beta's/alphas streamed. Look at Destiny - so much noise about it this last week.
I don't understand what Relic are afraid of - people who don't want to buy have already made their mind up, and everyone else wants to see the game before they want to buy. Show us that the F2P aspect is dead - show the world how great the game is going to be...
My personal opinion is to kill the wait and launch Friday. What are they waiting for? Things must already be ready and in place, most teams would be gold by this stage. Give us all a nice surprise and make the weekend glorious is what I say.
Imagine the level of hype and confidence it would show to launch this Friday... It would be fantastic. |
Everyone.
And some who didn't. |
Brody Tank War?
Is fantastic. Without a doubt. But its one map, and it isn't decided by tanks - its decided by VP's. And where is the German equivalent? |
I'm seriously disappointed and surprised that there hasn't been a proper tank battle yet. There's missions where you can only build tanks, etc, but no mission focused around a tank battle and AT infantry.
I find most, if not all TOW missions frustrating - the AI is a big fat phony cheat in every single one. Literally the only way to beat some of them is to massively abuse certain mechanics, because your troops are like tissue paper. So much for heroism. |
I personally feel this is the best designed and balanced commander yet. I'd love to see them overhaul the other commanders to be just as useful, then maybe look at nerfing radio.
I feel if radio did get a nerf, the mine notifications and pushing it back to 1CP would be enough. At least you wouldn't immediately know your opponents build order. Alternatively, a warning to the German player when its active would be great. If you see G43's, at least you know interrogation is likely from the German player.
Also don't forget how crippling it is to choose your commander from the get go - the Russians lose all flexiblity (not that they have a lot in the first place). If you know radio is active, you know to expect mass conscript spam or heavy armour down the line. |
The answers to most of the problems, especially in tournaments seem obvious to me.
First is the ladder - I suggest that a seperate automatch queue, which disallows paid commanders and bulletins be implemented. This is considered the "official ladder" and Relic can source top players for high level tournaments for this, it can be used as a yardstick or a measure of a players skill too if necessary.
Second, tournaments - It's all very well supporting community tournies, but we need some official ingame tournaments based on the above. Warcraft 3 did this - players signed up, automatched against a tournament pool and had their stats counted. It can be run in rounds online, through the game. Everyone would benefit from this - you can even take BeltFed's suggestions and implement them, disallowing certain commanders or having a specific map pool. I don't know about the limitations on something like this, but it would be great.
Finally, the game really, really, REALLY needs a custom lobby, ala DOW2:Retribution or the Relic Online version of COH1. People like to screw around vs computers in games they control, people like silly stacked odds and bulletins. The latest patch shows you still care about this audience - hell you fixed a lot of the ridiculous features of the AI. Just take this final step and COH2 will look after itself.
As a side note: Finally, as a person primarily interested in COH2's single-player, where is the rest of the TOW content? I feel like we've stalled at 1943. There's so many incredible battles, including that famous tank battle the name of which constantly escapes me that need to be implemented. The game still screams unfinished to me, not only because of the lack of the custom lobby but because of things like this. The setting is not being used to its maximum - I feel Relic is running scared since the whole Russia hates COH2 thing.
I've gotten over my anger about commanders, but I definately think some of them need a revisit and rebalance (I'm referring to the first round of paid DLC commanders that collectors got). I wouldn't mind those being released for free to everyone once the rebalance is done too. |
wongtp, you CANNOT leave politics out of war. War is caused by politics - bad politics in particular. Very, very rarely is there a war that is just or has proper meaning (not to say they have no meaning - they mean different things to different sides).
I'd like to point out that COH2 is based on a diary of a Russian dissident, heavily anti-communist, so its likely to have a massive slant on its story, one which Relic neither disagrees or agrees with, and was simply portraying.
The only memorable scene was the Polish rebels being killed, which just reminds me of the horrible things the Russians did to the Poles. I don't see how that makes COH2 anti-russian, just realistic.
I will say, COH as a series has made me respect the plight of other nations. I always feel sorry for the germans, many of whom were brainwashed little boys who were forced by propaganda and radical leaders to fight. I feel exactly the game for the Russians.
One must, however, acknowledge that Relic may not have done a perfect job portraying the Russians. All criticism isn't without merit. |
As a CE owner, I share Nullist's feelings - we got screwed. I've done the math and know that, in theory, we got a small discount, but the 33% sale in september and the fact preorders got equally as much content? It's a slap in the face to fans who wanted to give back to Relic.
But, I've paid £20 shy the price of BF4 + Premium and gotten a handful of commanders and skins with a single pack (most of which was given to preorder folks).
Tommy's post highlighted the case best - the current price, without collectors, is £150.
POUNDS. ENGLISH. STERLING. That is £60 more than BF4+Premium, The price of the digital collectors edition when its on sale or whatever.
Noun, are you mad claiming this isn't BF4 or COD? its far, far worse than that. What's more, we still have content yet to come - another 4 years of TOW, which is likely another 8 packs @ £7 a pop - another £56, which again is over the price of a full game.
At this rate, we're approaching the price of a games console - its stratospheric. Now I love Relic, and would happily pay the money I paid for Retribution and all its DLC, or Space Marine and all its DLC (50-100 each with collectors editions). But this is madness.
Currently, going by BF4 Premium we have 5 expansions to expect - for the price of £40. That looks considerably more attractive than COH2, and its sad when I'd rather pay DICE for that privilege rather than Relic.
EDIT:
Occurred to me people don't like long posts. TL-DR is, I don't feel Anything is worth it.
Commanders aren't worth £3 (£2 yes, but £3 no), and £1.60 for a skin that only covers one subset of tanks is a cop out (should cover all three for £2). I also feel that the price of the TOW mini-packs is also a little high, and should be closer to £5. I'd be blowing money quite quickly at these prices.
The new combo packs are about right, but £10 for so little content (when I got the XCOM expansion for £12) still stings a bit.
I appreciate Relic need to make money to keep going, but this constant deluge of content never happened for Dawn of War, and that game did absolutely fine. Can't you guys go back to a more traditional expansion model to finish off TOW? |
I'll be honest, I'd rather see the older commanders get updated with new units and abilities. Some of them are really dull, samey and outright boring. The panzer command tank is in everything it seems, and isn't really a great unit like the field officer is. A lot of abilities are recycled and they tend to just make the game boring. |
