General Information


Thread: Tim's film topic!7 Sep 2013, 23:25 PM Things I done gone and seen recently: Elysium: my expectations were pretty low going in and it was actually an alright film. Nothing especially smart but looked pretty gorgeous, was basically satisfying if clichéd and a South African villain for a change. My Name Is Nobody: the spaghetti western Leone produced (directed by Tonino Valerii, IIRC, who was the assistant director on A Fistful Of Dollars) with Henry Fonda and some Italian comedy western star (Terence Hill, I think). A really good, fun film, went a bit too cheesy and nostalgic at the end and some probably will like the accentuated buffoonery less than the subtler versions of the same in Leone's films but brilliantly shot, superb Morricone soundtrack and a really strong Leone-styled (possibly even Leone-shot, maybe) opening. Definitely worth seeing if you're a fan of the Leone films. Escape From Alcatraz: unusually successful for those films that walk the line between being populist grimdark pulp stuff while having something more to aim at. Siegel's focus is extremely tight, Patrick McGoohan is one of my favourite people, Clint Eastwood is, as always, and I really appreciate that the film is confident enough about itself that it doesn't feel the need to tell you what to feel. Tsotsi: South African film, very engaging, great music. On the one hand, not really doing anything mind-blowingly weird but on the other very effective at what it does and approaches it from an interesting angle. Also, nice seeing a sorta crime drama set somewhere there's very serious crime problems as opposed to British/American paranoiac fantasies. Smart People: it was on iplayer. Mostly a bland/bad rom-com, where the two leads aren't really verylikeable or comprehensible and then espouse needy preachy life-fixing rubbish and are suddenly happy. Buuut Ellen Paige was incredible as a supporting character, and the film was worth a watch for that alone. Night Passage: Jimmy Stewart western. He took the part to show off his accordion skills. What more recommendation could you want. Not a great film but definitely entertaining. In: Scrap Yard

Sometimes I even see it pass through once and then just fly around wasting time and waving at soviet troops. I have switched to soviets in last patch and t3 is completely viable now. Spammig t34s is a real good strat now as it should be. Some of you may still be stuck in ur op su85 strat thinking its the only way to deal with Germans when its not. And some posters are right, if he is spamming strafe with the ridiculously munition reliant Germans you are doing something horribly wrong. It's real easy to hunt down opels once you realize he has gone that doctrine. I almost cannot believe some soviet players are still crying about this. Adapt to the battlefield conditions and come up with a different start instead of "sniper guards su85s" lol. See, this is my problem with the counter-arguments in this thread. For any other 120-200 muni off-map, the counter is usually to move out of the way, pay attention and not clump up too much. For the 3cp, 120 muni strafing run the counter suggested is to use a very specific build and never get pushed off the map even for a moment. In: COH2 Balance

Quote UNquote. Shogun 2 started way better than Rome 1, Empire or Napoleon. I got it mostly because it seemed promisingly well-optimised compared to those games. From the Anon Dev Review: It is my professional opinion that CA have taken what was an immersive, detailed, tactical, and market leading series and have turned it into a better looking but fundamentally simplified and dumbed down version of its formal self. They have seriously damaged the tactical element to this game, taken out tried and tested elements and have replaced them with arcade elements. This is a bizarrely perfect description of the change from Medieval 1 to the first Rome. Waiting for a sale for Rome 2 myself, I think. In: Other Games

The thing that irritates me is the soviet 120mm. You can kill 5 guys and it still retreats with one man, wheeling that fucker out of there. Why is it like this and do you guys think it is balanced? If so, why? What about the regular russian 82mm mortar does the last guy retreat with the mortar or abandon? PS: I know the 120mm has wheels but it is big, and must weigh a lot not to mention the heavy shells. Surely one guy can also carry the 80mm german one. I also know that it is doctrinal, but it is still a mortar, and should function the same as other mortars at least regarding the retreat/abandon mechanic. I mean, doctrinal tanks have the same chance to be abandoned as regular tanks, why should a mortar call-in have different retreat/abandon mechanics than regular mortars? I think the fact that it has 6 men should already make it hard enough to kill. The last guy wheeling it away is imho just a bit too much. I don't think it's actually a balance problem. One guy can just forgo getting any LMGs, not get a flamer HT, not worry about upgunning ACs, etc and just hold out for strafe spam. Or perhaps even more likely, you're seeing 2 people use it and alternating and assuming it's one guy who just keeps spamming it. At that point, your best bet has already been demonstrated here - quad AA. It's not a guarantee but if they're that hard into it you're going to need to bring a counter. You won't see strafe spam in 1v1 or 2v2 because it's a losing strategy. If you are losing to that in 1v1 or 2v2 you're just being outplayed. Each truck represents an absent squad and is killable by literally anything, and Ost not getting things like LMG or FHT is going to be struggling. All that being said, I think it went from "game breaking" to "still really good" after the last nerf. It could maybe use a small cost increase to 150 or indirect nerf by changing AA mechanics to have higher % kill on each pass or something, but it's more or less good right now. Um, while someone just saving up munitions to strafe isn't going to have much of a shot in most 1v1 maps, strafe is really much more powerful in 1v1 than bigger games. Partly because you won't have both T3 and T4, getting AA halftracks as a response is much less feasible, partly because it suppresses a much bigger area of the map and it's much easier to pen someone in on 1v1 after forcing a retreat. I'd like to see small arms vs houses improved, MGs in buildings having less range (to make sniper micro against them less problematic) and buildings less likely to get one-shotted by a mortar or riflenade. After that, I think a sniper accuracy increase against buildings (higher for the German sniper, say) would be a nice addition. In: COH2 Balance

If you remove base-pin, other fun features might be considered op as well. Arty retreating units in base is always fun and cheap, both onmap and offmap arty. As soviet, get a HT with quad if you see planes. This game is about getting a counter to the strat you are facing. If you are having problem with strafes, spread out your infantry and or get a quad-HT. Artying retreating units is a one-time effect that you can actually dodge and your opponent has to time just right. Strafe just stops you leaving your base at all on certain maps for minutes at a time (and it's completely undodgeable), while the German consolidates map-presence and makes sure he has the munitions for another one minutes later. My general approach is to go for Tier 3 if I see the Strafe commander, just because you can get T-70s and AT guns and almost ignore it. The quad's muni cost makes it sorta prohibitive. Spreading your infantry to the extent where they can't be hit by the strafe is problematic, since, especially on small maps, it covers a very big area, and this more or less allows a single off-map ability to hard-counter snipers continually. It just invalidates a ton of stuff that a really cheap off-map shouldn't. My basic view is that you should compare it to Propaganda Artillery, which is actually dodgeable, has a less certain effect and isn't tremendously effective at the basepin. It's still a nice, useful ability in the right circumstances and it costs the same. More importantly, it's actually fun to play against and takes some skill to deploy effectively. @Devil, part of the problem is that it comes with the Opel Blitz Trucks, which on some maps are reasonably easy to deal with but on others are incredibly hard to get to against a half-competent opponent (say, on Minsk Pocket, Semois and Langres). Harassing someone to the point where they can't use a 120 munis ability with that is quite hard. Also, there's a real compounding effect of strafe, where it hurts map presence seriously enough that it makes it hard to get munitions control back after a momentary slip. I don't think it has to be changed (though I'd like to see something about the base-pin functionality it has), it just ought to be at least 200 munis for how powerful it is so it can't be used as often. Plane only passes like every 2 minutes now after the nerf and doesn't pin all over the map like it used to, and rarely kills many, if any, troops in my experience. All in all, no, I haven't have experiences like that recently. The basepin with it is just ridiculous, and I think it's way too good for just 120 munitions. With an opel blitz truck or two it's just incredibly frustrating to get out on the field sometimes. It's way better since the nerf but still seems like the most powerful anti-inf off-map for cost in the game by some distance. In: COH2 Balance

My point being both KV-8 and FlameHT burn the same,why nerf just the Soviet one which doesn't come fast as the FlameHT? This is just my opinion so don't hate,for me they all burn the same They don't actually burn the same. Not even close on a stats level. In: COH2 Balance
