This so-called "AT" gun does not perform as it should for it's cost.
Considering ZiS is non-doctrinal and costs 320 MP and M-42 is doctrinal and sits at 200MP you should expect it to perform like slightly worse ZiS and yet it just doesnt
ZiS has far peneteration of 180, while M-42 has far pen of 60, meaning for a 2/3 cost of ZiS, it has performance of 1/3 of ZiS
To sum it up
1) This unit does perform according to its cost
2) This a doctrinal unit that is worse compared to ZiS and Penals which are non-doctrinal
3) Guards who are doctrinal do all the things this unit does but better and they are anti-infantry unit foremost
Can we all agree on this?
P.S. stuff like bazookas has far penetration of 110 |
just forget m-42 and replace it with something more useful ffs..
kv2?, is2?
That commander needs something for late game.
They are considering KV-2, but I think flame artillery is what going to get axed if they are going to do this, not m-42.
It's still worthless as heck but if they buff far pen to 100 and allow it to be garrisonable and make its cone of attack wider (which they are thinking of doing) it might actually become semi-useful in midgame, by just being pain in the ass for axis to deal with |
NKVD doctrine has no scaling into late game, and Commisar alone isnt going to carry it.
It needs either PPSh upgrade for conscripts or KV-1 as suggested above
Also vet1 increasing squad size is bit silly, its not a real ability.
It would be better off to just increase squad size to 6 from beginning and give squad more fitting Penal vet (To the last man!), then you could drop RA from 0.87 back to 0.97
You could also give grenade to Commisar, it's only elite infantry squad doctrine has after all, nothing else could threaten wipes on the field otherwise
|
It looks like we need to thank people for bringing up KV-2, because Urban doctrine seems to be getting one after all.
*Maybe*
P.S Regarding Cavmen and their sticky satchel, I know this is outside of scope BUT, is there any chance Recon Paratrooper squad with super-bazookas get gets this sticky satchel too?
It fits them more than it fits cavmen consdering you sacrifice an elite squad for this |
M42 was THE standard Soviet ATG, like the PaK 40. The Zis 3 was divisional light arty (basically same role as the leFH) - which also had its capacity as ATG, but it was not its primary intended goal.
You have no idea what the hell you are even talking about. Zis-3 was multipurpose gun, it was used for every role including AT and was de-facto standard AT gun for Soviet troops, M-42 had only one role due to small gun caliber, thats why it was designated as AT gun and by midwar it was already phased out by ZiS-2. |
Swapping the M42 with a KV2 sounds good. The KV2 fits the commander, using it to hold an area and protect a medic bunker/FHQ.
Or at the very least swapping the incendiary call-in with the KV2.
As far as I understand from twitch chat they either *can't* replace it or dont want to do it for some reason
And since Urban Defence/Defensive doctrines are lucky enough to get stuck with it means there are only 3 solutions for it
1 Making it a proper AT gun
2 Making it AI gun
3 Put it in bundle with something useful
I'm pretty sceptic about N1 and N2 |
I like the idea of bundling it with PTRS Conscript, although that won't make M42 case any better.
M42 should have the ability like "Snipe Unit" and "Break tread" like CoH1's AT Halftrack. That will immediately give it a place in this game.
In addition to your idea of new Soviet ability, the Soviet still have the ability "Soviet War Machine" in Campaign map 3 that has not been used in MP.
The thing is - you cant make M42 case any better anyway. This thing made sense when PTRS upgrade for Penals didnt exist, now it's completely pointless even VS light vehicles since it's always to better to get either ZiS from T2 or PTRS upgrade from T1.
Bundling something like PTRS Conscripts with it will at least allow you to get something out of bad deal which M42 is. |
Here is another solution for M42 - bundle it along with something else. Like PTRS Conscript squad callin or DShK.
Or you can give it Soviet version of Withdraw and Refit where you can simply sell this thing off after it's done it's job or replace it with ZiS after paying additional MP |
200 manpower worth much more than 100 munitions for 2 bazookas or piats and performs much worse for it's cost, thanks for proving my point |
Actually instead of overlapping with Zis it should become allot better vs light vehicles. The unit cost 200 manpower as much a R.E. squad it should not be able to deal with mediums.
It was designed as stop gap to promote T1 play and it should stick to that role.
Faster reaction time, high accuracy, high rotation speed that is what it needs not more penetration.
Then simply test the unit before you complain that it is penetrate by "anything above mauser"...
RE are non-doc engineer squad, this is a doctrinal AT gun.
You can put zooks on RE and they can easily destroy even heavy armor, while m42 would stay useless beyond early game |
