Any serious buff to the unit should end up with reducing it's weapon slot to 1. In history of CoH2 we already had a Rears Echelons blobs.
If that happens increase of his performance wouldn't hurt anyone
Reduce slots to 1 and add a second at vet 3. You still get the flexibility of racks without the blob potential and have to EARN superb firepower instead of buy it outright.. |
We'll see how that plays out, but sight alone makes pios better.
HMG with better sight range is better, so they are ultimate recrew stock unit.
Plus the whole "actually an engineer" aspect. All CE can do is lay wire while pios can throw up Bunkers and sandbags as well. |
It's a bit different though considering penals are the Soviets ONLY non doc infantry while okw starts strong with sturms and coasts by on the power of volks. Earlier Obers is a welcome change, but not faction defining like penals have been made to be.
Also you got it wrong, volks are they way they are because of penals, penals are theywat they are because of volks who single handedly show cons how to do ALL of their jobs AND fight as well making cons an absolute obsolete unit. |

I actually in part pick it BECAUSE of the riegle. Last wave of patches made halftrack and panzer grens better than ever. Being able to throw down mines at the same time is just a huge bonus.

they only nerfed the scatter a little bit, removed the moving accuracy , and reduced rotation
this patch already buffing the acceleration (so crushing too) and target size
if we give it back the moving acc too i think we would be back to old cromwell they also reduced the range if I recall. Pen too? |
And what's the point then in the Penals if they have to buy SVT-40? This will be T1 Conscripts with the possibility of SVT-40 purchase. Then it is much simpler and more profitable to simply remove the Penals and transfer the SVT-40 to the Conscripts. This will solve the question of the disgusting design of the two starting infantry units. If we leave the Conscripts as they are and make the Penalts with the purchase of SVT-40, then in the end we will get instead of one unviable tier two unviable tiers.

Con vet is mostly defensive in nature while penals are all about the offense. Could be a really good dynamic if pulled off right. |
I realise that some people would like to buy a bunch of these infantry and charge around, but I really think that would be worse design that what we have at the moment. You've got to look at the rest of the doctrine to see its viability.
The dshks enable you to lock down the map very effectively. In combination with the quadmount, you have very effective 'crowd control', which makes sniper play easier and more rewarding. On top of that you have assault guards who have serious shock value at 3 CP since another unit can be added to the M5 (such as a minesweeper, a flamer engie or a ptrs penal). When the get to vet 2 they can 1v1 pretty much any axis unit.
On current patch, the Guards are trash. Play the balance patch and test stuff out. I really enjoy the flavour of this commander at the moment since it enables some of my favourite Soviet units and playstyles.
Hundreds of manpower into mgs, snipers, likley penals and then delaying armour for a halftrack bundle for 1 squad? I hope you are wiping every enemy squad from the start of the game else you are going to be so out numbered you won't have the map control for anything but the halftrack. |
Does Assault Guard veterancy still differ significantly from normal Guard veterancy?
Should be looked into if it's so, patch only mentioned they get Thompsons instead of PPSH's.
it whould be a bit different, if i recall normal guards get a pen buff with vet which wouldnt be necessary for ass guards, i think they have some sort of combat buff in its place |
