Thread: Which WWII Officer/General is your role model?11 May 2015, 11:40 AM
The thing about my men when I play, is I get shit done even if I sacrifice a few. No one dies in vain, because the unit as a whole has a tendency to win battles, and even if they lose, maximize casualties on the enemy. I don't win every match, but I do my best to insure the enemy has a hefty price to pay for going against my men. This is why Gotthard Heinrici is my #1 favorite WWII General and who I look up to when I'm in game. He knew how to maximize enemy casualties while minimizing his own, even if the battle was impossible for him to win (SeeLow Heights) In: The Library |
Thread: How fight IS2 and ISU without tiger or elephant?7 May 2015, 14:09 PM
Hi guys, in many game i have a big problem with IS2 and ISU. I try attack with 2-3 Pz4 but i always lost them The best weapons in each tier for taking down heavies is Pak40/Schreck squads. These get squad wiped a lot so use them in a support role. StuG for T3. Panther for T4. Out of all of these units I mentioned the Panther should be your main focus. Really once IS2 and ISU-152's are hitting the field, QUIT BUILDING P4'S. WIthout any of the call ins the only tank that can pose a threat to either of them is a Panther. And your Panther needs Vet too, so keep it alive. Easier said than done, but losing your first panther can be the whole game right there. Short of veterancy level 3 maybe, the P4 is a weak soft counter to the Soviet heavies. I usually quit building P4's once I see them churning out SU85's or for Americans, M36 Jacksons. When ISU-152's and IS2's are hitting the field, I tell my teammate "Panthers or better from here on out". FOr those rounds that are giant tank battles it's good to have a commander with a lot of AT capabilities, Jaeger Armor is probably the best Wehrmacht commander for countering all allied armor in the game, Lightning War is too, and then maybe Close Air Support DOctrine. Why aren't you picking a commander with these call ins though? You need a selection of commanders that can counter the commander you're against. I like Jaeger Armor because not only do I get the Elefant, spotting scopes and Riegel AT Mines, but for Soviet Artillery spammers such as the Soviet Howitzer and B4, I can use an aerial reconnaissance overhead and then drop a stuka right onto his artillery piece, assuming you got the muni for it. Jaeger Armor alone has abilities that hard counters both Soviet Heavy Armor as well as their support weapons like AT guns, as well as Soviet Artillery weapons like the B4 and Soviet Howitzer. Since there are what, 5 Soviet Commanders who have artillery abilities, I find that the aerial+stuka combo of Jaeger Armor hard counters no less than 5 Soviet Artillery commanders, throw in the spotting scopes, riegels and Elefant, and you can take on a whole crap ton of Soviet Commanders and have hard counters for whatever they're throwing at you. I often find 2 panthers equipped with spotting scopes to provide plenty of AT for a round thats gone into lategame, since the Panther really benefits from the scope and being able to take long range shots at enemy armor that it can see, but the enemy can not see you. Elefant is more of a team game weapon, I couldn't imagine too many 1v1's requiring an Elefant unless facing some serious tank spam in a round that's lasted more than 30 minutes or so. What doctrine are you picking? Helps if you have Stuka AT strafe too. Really it takes combined arms to drop those tanks, especially if they're supported. For a general purpose commander with some late game punch, right now I've been picking Lightning War Doctrine. Best $3 I ever spent. Comes with the Tiger AND Stuka AT strafe, and I was playing around with Stuka AT strafe and I believe he also targets and easily destroys soviet artillery pieces as well as their tanks, light vehicles and infantry and support weapons. You need Teller Mines, Riegels if you can pick a doctrine with those are better since they immobilize, AT guns like Pak40's or Pak43 with a shotblock in front if you're using a doctrine, Stuka AT Strafe can help finish them off if you've already damaged their engine and the enemy doesn't have too much Anti-Aircraft weaponry, schreck squads to attack the flanks, or a well placed Pak40, but for me the centerpiece of taking on these heavies is a vetted Panther. IMO a vet 2/3 Panther is better for killing tanks overall than a vetted Tiger, it at least has some decent range on it's main gun (Yes I know TIger gets a range buff at vet2, haven't played with too many vet2 tigers though considering how much shit you gotta kill to get it to vet2). |
Thread: How do you use PG's?7 May 2015, 12:05 PM
I have a pretty effective tactic. FOr the most part in my games I do gren/gren/gren/sniper for my opening build. Flamethrower Pioneers I only do if I'm not facing a soviet since Soviets have those stupid demo charges that can squad wipe 2 squads at the same time. Whether the enemy is in cover or over open terrain, engage them at long range with the grens, and if they're in cover, have the sniper behind the screen of grens picking off the allies from beyond their weapons ranges. Seems to work extremely effectively for me without having to spend muni on gimmicks like the rifle grenade or upgrading my pio with flamethrowers and being at the mercy of the SOviet player NOT spamming mines and satchels. I spam the Attack Move feature or "A" button on my keyboard a lot as this allows my units to effortlessly to start firing on enemy positions at their maximum range. Seems to be the kinds of engagements my grens and sniper excel the most at. edit: Also when the Conscript/American GI squad runs up to throw the Molotov/Grenade, DON'T SIT IN THE GRENADE/MOLOTOV WHILE IT GOES OFF. That will save you A LOT of squad wipes. |
Thread: How do you use PG's?7 May 2015, 11:53 AM
If you need ANti-Infantry in a round, I'd rather build a grenadier squad than a Pgren squad. Pgren's AI ability is mediocre and worthless at any range higher than mid. I usually build them with the full intention of upgrading them with panzerschrecks eventually. Hold off on your grens Panzerfausts and Riflegrenades if need be to save for upgrading them with panzerschrecks. They do well at attacking penals while staying outside of their flamethrower range I'll give them that much. Thats one of the few 1v1 infantry battles in the game where Pgrens hold their own. Most squads equipped with rifles will dominate pgrens in any given situation except if they're charging a pgren squad and while the pgren squad is in cover. I also think their accuracy with the STG44 shoots up dramatically if the Pgrens aren't moving, so if you need a squadwipe, hit "S" on your keyboard after you've gotten in range and let them do all the work. |
Thread: How do you use PG's?7 May 2015, 11:39 AM
http://www.coh2-stats.com/ballistic_weapons I just looked up the numbers, and I can't say that the schreck does more "damage" up close vs far away, however it appears to get a small penetration bonus for firing up close vs far away, I imagine the scatter is reduced close or it's "more accurate" and coh2stats says that it's "DPS" is significantly higher at a close range than a far range. What this says to me is getting as close as you possibly can before getting your schreck shot off is the best way to use them as an AT weapon. I usually close in til the Allied tank/vehicle starts hitting reverse, thats when I get my schreck shots off. |
Thread: How do you use PG's?7 May 2015, 11:12 AM
I use them mainly as a AT support weapon. I build them every game as they're so useful. Even with the schreck nerf (which as an Ostheer player even I think was reasonable and was needed to buff allies, particularly the Americans), they're the best AT Infantry unit in the game. put them in cover and have the enemy charge into you. I don't think they become a shocks troops assault type unit until they get vet3 and armor but by then usually I've upgraded them with schrecks for countering mid-late game allied armor and hurt their AI ability so bad (due to replacing 2 STG44's with schrecks) that they're only good for decrewing support weapons and destroying the support weapon so it doesn't fall back into enemy hands. Hold off on upgrading them with schrecks until your opponent has started spamming vehicles/tanks. Their STG44's are decent to bleed Allied Infantry blobs and cover flanks from infantry rushes for early-mid game AI if you keep them in cover until you need AT weapons. I often have rounds where my Pgrens do by far the most damage, more than panther tanks, or tiger tanks or any other unit I field because the schreck is such a great Infantry AT weapon, even killed some IS2's with it if u hit the rear armor (try saying the same for a PTS AT Rifle). Correct me if I'm wrong, but does coh2-stats say that their Schreck does MORE damage, like twice as much, up close than from far away? I'm gonna double check that but that may be why my Pgrens damage is far higher than any other infantry unit I field in the game because I get as close as possible to the target prior to firing off my schreck rounds. Right now the best way I can recommend to use them is to hide them behind an object so they're not in your enemy's LOS, wait for the vehicle/tank to roll past them and fire off 4 schreck shots into the rear armor. It often is enough to kill a T34 or M36 Jackson. Also they're good for cutting off the retreat path of say a pesky soviet sniper thats retreating if you keep them hidden and behind enemy lines. Try not to lose too many men in their squads, you'll bleed manpower and they take a long time to reinforce, keep them out of harms way until the situation calls for them, similar to other support weapons like the StuG, Flamenwerfer halftrack or Pak40. THe other way I use them is to have my tanks push forward, when they run into AT resistance from enemy tanks, have them reverse back. Often enough the Allied tank will chase to try and destroy my panther/tiger or whatever and I charge up close with the Pgrens and get 4 schreck shots into their armor. These 2 tactics are extremely effective at countering armor with Pgrens. In conjunction with the Grens Panzerfaust ability, Germans have the best Infantry units for hard countering allied armor, none of the allied infantry can hard counter axis armor nearly as good as a Gren Panzerfaust damaging the engine and Pgrens closing in with schrecks to finish it off. One last great thing about Pgrens, is with schrecks using my tactics, for me they're about the easiest unit in the game to get up to vet3 in the shortest amount of time possible. My Pgrens make vet2 and vet3 almost every game If I'm keeping one Pgren for AI purposes and one for AT purposes because I don't need a lot of AT for, for example just countering Allied Vehicle spam coming from the Americans, I upgrade the squad with the least amount of experience with schrecks first because it'll pass the more experienced squad in veterancy shortly. One last thing, never pick up weapons with Pgrens. Have your Grens pick up weapons. Grens need to be used mainly for AI, and Pgrens with schrecks are all but purely an AT weapon. |

Whats sad about Joachim Peiper is when he was an old man well past his war crime days, he was assassinated in a bombing. He had a really rough life after WWII, no one wanted to hire him because he was considered a Nazi War Criminal who got off too lightly. He couldn't even work a job as an executive at Porsche without members of the public heavily protesting the company. Also he wasn't universally horrible towards Prisoners of War despite the Malmedy massacre. A United States Officer who's unit was captured by Joachim Peiper's described his treatment under him. However, Lieutenant Colonel Hal McCown, commander of the 2nd Battalion 119 Infantry Regiment, testified about the treatment his unit was given after being captured on 21 December by Peiper's Kampfgruppe at Froidcour between La Gleize and Stoumont. McCown said he met Peiper in person and based on his observations, American prisoners were at no time mistreated by the SS and the food given to them was nearly as good as that used by the Germans themselves.[90] I read a book by Eisenhowers son on the Battle of the Bulge with Joachim Peiper as a key figure in the book, and it made Joachim Peiper, if not for the Malmedy massacre, very hospitable, cordial and caring of his American POW's, probably under the reports of the same Officer as this Hal McCown guy (My book got destroyed in a flood so I can't find it). Despite the Malmedy massacre, American and British troops received far better treatment at the hands of their captors than the Russians did. In Hurtgen Forest, after the Germans had kicked the Americans asses, the American medics, and German medics negotiated a truce so all the medical professionals for both armies could work on the wounded together. The German medics saved a lot of American lives that day, despite winning the battle. In: The Library |
Thread: Assault Grenadier Accuracy Bulletin apply to regular grens?29 Apr 2015, 13:20 PM
I'm debating putting this in my bulletin line up. To me 3% increased accuracy is better than the 2% cooldown/2% reload bulletin. Does anyone know? In: Strategy Desk |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felix_Steiner What about Felix Steiner? He was in this massive battle completely outnumbered in every conceivable way and still destroyed the Russians pretty bad. Narva he had a 17:1 casualty ratio on the Russians. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Narva_(1944) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Tannenberg_Line He's also the famous Steiner of that Adolf Hitler video in Der Untergang. If I had a General I modeled my play around, or was kind of a role model for me when I'm in game, it would be Gotthard Heinrici. He was a chivalrous officer with a family military history dating back to the 12th century. He was a Knights Cross holder with Oakleaves and Swords and considered the best defensive tactician in the entire Wehrmacht. The Nazi high command had a strong dislike for him, despite him being an excellent General. He did not do scorched earth tactics and was punished for not destroying Smolensk. "Late in January 1942, Heinrici was given command of the 4th Army. This unit was crucial to the rapidly crumbling German line directly facing Moscow. The Fourth Army under Heinrici held out against the Soviet onslaught for ten weeks, playing a critical role in containing General Zhukov's counter-attack. Heinrici managed this even though his forces were sometimes outnumbered 12 to 1. During this time, Heinrici developed one of his most famous tactics: when he judged a Soviet attack was imminent, Heinrici would pull his troops back from the line prior to the preliminary artillery barrage. Then, immediately afterwards, he would return them unharmed back to their lines to face the attacking Soviet troops. When an officer protested this tactic, saying it resembled a retreat (something Hitler had forbidden), Heinrici replied, "When a worker is cleaning a punch press in a factory, does he stick his head under the slab when it turns on? No! He pulls it out of the way in time!"" So do any of you have a favorite figure from WWII when you're playing? BTW I just got back from my Grandpa's place, he's 96, he was a Captain in the US Army and fought in Africa and Italy against Albert Kesselring and Erwin Rommel's forces. A couple years ago he gave me his WWII vintage Captain bars In: The Library |
