I made some notes for a Vietnam gone WW3 setting where USA/ARVN are at war with China/PAVN. I think it'd be great because the mixture of weaponry present in Vietnam is almost as interesting as World War II. You had Carbines like the M1/M2 and SKS, Battle Rifles like the M1 Garand and M14 and MAS-49, Assault Rifles like the Type-56/AKM and M16, and Submachine Guns were not irrelevant yet. The use of helicopters would add some interesting abilities like dropping off a squad or acting as a temporary reinforcement point, not to mention close-air-support that is more responsive than loitering airplanes.

US ARMY

U.S.G.I. - US Army riflemen, their superior marksmanship allows them to excel at ranged combat, but they can be overwhelmed by close range attacks.
5 men with M14 Battle Rifles, can upgrade to 3 M16 Assault Rifles.
Ability to throw M26 Fragmentation Grenade, and fire M72 LAW.

Notes: USGI are designed to be contrasted with PAVN Troops, using long range semi-automatic weapons as opposed to the rapid-fire assault rifles. Their upgrade to M16 rifles improves their firepower at all ranges and reflects the Army's attempts to catch up to their adversary.

PEOPLE'S ARMY OF VIETNAM (NORTH VIETNAM)

PAVN Troops - Low quality Infantry with high quality gear, inferior at long range but can overwhelm an enemy with superior firepower up close.
6 men with Type-56 Assault Rifles, can upgrade to 1 RPD Light Machine Gun.
Ability to throw Fragmentation Grenade, and use undetermined anti-tank projectile.

Notes: Same as mentioned above, but the addition of a magazine fed light machine gun (automatic rifle style profile) will improve their damage and allow them to hold their ground once the Americans get M16's.

ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM (SOUTH VIETNAM)

ARVN Riflemen - The backbone of South Vietnam, the ARVN Riflemen suffer from outdated equipment, but make up for it in availability.
5 men armed with four M1 Garands and one M1918 Automatic Rifle, can be upgraded to 4 M2 Carbines OR replace M1918 with M1919A6.
Ability to throw Mk II Fragmentation Grenade, Fire M72 LAW.

Notes: The ARVN are equipped with US war surplus from past conflicts, they're heavily contrasted by the more modern PAVN. The free stock BAR helps lesson the blow of casualties against superior firepower, and they can be reconfigured for aggressive or defensive tactics with their upgrades.

PEOPLE'S LIBERATION ARMY OF CHINA

Skirmish Troops (T1) - Light infantry tasked with probing enemy positions and holding captured territory.
6 men armed with Type 56 Semi-Auto Rifles (SKS)
Abilities to be determined. May have some 'retreat from suppression' ability to emphasize their probing role.

Frontline Troops (T2) - Highly trained and devoted volunteers, these soldiers are best used to exploit gaps in enemy defences.
6 men armed with Type 56 Automatic Rifles.
Ability to throw Fragmentation Grenade.

Notes: The use of 2 stages of infantry is an interesting and unique concept, like Grenadiers and Panzergrenadiers or Conscripts and Shock Troops. The conceptual use is for Skirmish Troops to probe and engage the enemy while Frontline Troops take more aggressive actions. As the name suggests, Frontline Troops will become the predominant unit of the PLA by late-game.

Why do people insist on a specific theatre? Allowing for more theatres increases diversity and the ways you can play the game, which I see as a win

Early cold war (before big MBTs, ATGMs, etc.) in a fictional gone hot scenario would easily fit CoH's gameplay and the possibilities for factions (all NATO vs Warsaw Pact countries) are much bigger than WWII factions. The Wargame series were set in this setting and they were excellent games with faction variety going through the roof.

If they made a semi-realistic version of the Advanced Powers mod that would be really cool. We could set it in 1945 or 1946, and for plot reasons let's just say Nazi Germany hasn't fallen yet. So you could have tech that bridges WW2 and the Cold War like Panther IIs, Super Pershings, IS-3s, Centurions, and the likes for tanks. For infantry weapons you'd have all the automatic rifles that the Germans already have, along with some experimental Allied weapons. Could also further develop on the infrared technology that both sides had. But I'd really like to see an expansion in the air arm of combined arms. Late WW2/early Cold War had some pretty cool jets, like the Gloster Meteor, Me 262, and He 162. At this stage helicopters were also being developed; the Western Allies had the Sikorsky R4 as a scout helicopter, while the Luftwaffe had the more capable Fa 223. We could theoretically introduce the concept of air cavalry 20 years earlier.

Do a bit more research and I think you'll find it more complicated than that ;)

As I said before;
Blackbird Interactive is Relic 2.0 and independent game studio. As Quinn Duffy points out in previous Relic anniversary streams without Homeworld there would have been no CoH.

Vision for BBI/Relic games?
https://forums.ageofempires.com/t/aoe4-director-quinn-duffy-offering-some-insight-and-also-talking-a-bit-about-aoe/30661
*snip*
Do you think the old rock-paper-scissors is better then the current APM based system in strategy games?
Quinn: I think that is the challenge on executing a strategy has become, it is such a focus on micro control. Im definitely from the school of more delibirate strategy where you have time to take a bit of approach to the surrounding land. I like that […] I’m not an APM guy because I’m not an APM player who can find success in that, I go for understanding the tactics and the game.
When you watch people playing some of the APM strategy games, if they make 1 or 2 minor failures, within a few seconds… thats it, they lose.
*snip*

About complexity and competitivity
Quinn: We want players to get to that strategy in a way that isn’t limited by physical skill (reflexes/APM)

I fully agree with this vision for future Relic/BBI tactical RTS games somewhat similar to Ground Control/World In Conflict. Before that great Real-time tactics included Myth: The Fallen Lords and WW2 Close Combat series.

Top competitive AoE player, TheViper confirms AoE2 is flawed (empower Quinn Duffy's vision);

https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/daxxam/age_of_empires_4_i_want_to_see_a_worthy_successor/
We have Age 2 DE, Age 4 and Warcraft 3 Reforged coming up after such a long time without competitive RTS on the mainstream. Do you think that RTS could make a comeback and attract new players?

TheViper: I think RTS is too complicated and demanding in terms of effort and skill set, that it can't compete with the less complicated, yet competitive games anymore. Those games simply appeal to more people as it's easier to play, yet competitive with a high skill ceiling. Maybe sometime in the future this will change again, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

BBI Studio Leadership:

BBI is making Homeworld 3 (IP owned by Gearbox/CEO Randy Pitchford) and another unannounced strategy game.
If Relic (which exists in name only) fails with CoH3 development, BBI is a strong candidate to make future CoH games.

CoH IP is owned by Sega, not Relic. They can outsource the IP as they see fit.
Sega Europe leadership also has Alex Peters which is a former Relic studio head from 2011-2013 when making CoH2.

Sega America has Rich Williams, former top THQ executive (12 years), Relic's former publisher:

The current Relic studio head is former MS with BigPark studio (former focus on MS Kinect).

Relic Entertainment appoints BigPark studio director as GM (Justin Dowdeswell)
https://www.mcvuk.com/business-news/publishing/relic-entertainment-appoints-bigpark-studio-director-as-gm/
As well as working at Kinect Sports: Season Two and Joy Ride Turbo developer BigPark as studio director, Justin Dowdeswell has previously held roles as development director at EA and as a producer and studio GM at Next Level Games.

Microsoft to acquire BigPark (Friday 8th May 2009):
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/microsoft-to-acquire-bigpark
BigPark was founded in 2007 by former employees of Distinctive Software and EA Canada, including Wil Mozell, Erik Kiss, Hanno Lemke and Don Mattrick, who later transitioned to a role at Microsoft prior to the acquisition.

BigPark co-founders is EA Don Mattrick which used to have a close business relationship with Relic founder Alex Garden. Mattrick almost destroyed the Xbox brand and likely also played a role in Alex Garden's retirement from the game industry in 2015;

Xbox Creator Says Don Mattrick Had Little Faith In The Console (March 6, 2019): https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-creator-says-don-mattrick-had-little-faith-in/1100-6465344/
Blackley@SeamusBlackley
I’ve never talked about this before, but the irony of Don Mattrick as Xbox Chief was huge for me: when I first came to EA Canada to present the idea of a Microsoft console, he nearly blocked me from addressing the company because he didn’t believe it was possible. It was tense.

How many CoH fans can put their money where their mouth is?
Are you willing to invest life savings into Relic's CoH3?
If not, why?
I'm not a Quinn Duffy fan but I do support his vision as I highlighted above.

Honestly, Sega should sell Relic to Microsoft/Xbox brand (without CoH IP). Whatever Sega is doing with Relic it doesn't seem to be working that well.

... Given that COH2 is still here and the servers aren't shut down, the game still (even if by community) gets updates / maps / balance tweeks... I assume COH3 will happen just not so sure on a time frame maybe years but I do see a reason to move on from WW2, I mean yeah the pacific but thats just less factions... what Japan and USA? throw in some Chinese? That's less then what they have now in COH2 (5 Factions)... And yes the current fanbase is WW2 passionate... But whats to stop a company from wanting to expand that fan base? (yea yea "they will lose fans if the leave the WW2 Theme" sure you will ...COH3 comes out you will buy it with that hate then say you love it later) Well I assume the general concept is gonna be some "WW3" Type concept With the same amount of factions, Throw in EU, USA, Russia, China, and ? for 5th, some sort of current Superpower... and do a "fantasy WW3 Concept" ... to enforce this idea with the WW2 and WW1 game hay-day was when Battlefields and Call of Dutys (and others) went thru there games set in those time frames and Now you see them all moving toward "Modern Warfare"
