OKW: Searchlight

For how effective this unit is it has next to no negative side effect. Sure it's range isn't massive but its big enough to be placed behind the main force.

What I find this unit needs is just like when a mortar is fired and you can see it through the FOW, when the searchlight spots you, you should get a glimpse of it through the FOW too (The AA campaign mission with them in it does this).

Currently there is only 1 way to find the searchlight and that's to either run in and hope you get far enough to even see it (although, you will be spotted and stuka'd before you even get the chance) or spend Muni for a recon.

It's the main unit I have a problem with currently and think it could do with this addition to balance the risk/reward of the unit.

It is a pretty dumb unit overall. But in a faction with pretty much 0 recon options what else are you supposed to do.

Making it as cheap as it is wasn't the right move. When they got rid of fuel cost they probably should have upped the MP cost.

+1 I've always thought it was borderline OP in big games since Allies are the "flank and surprise the superior armor" side but Axis gets a cheap map hack-ish unit that completely stops that? Come on. In big games that drag on OKW almost always buys one with their usual MP float and this really hurts the Allies IMO and is part of the reason why Axis dominates 3v3+

I've always liked the idea of turning it into like the old Recon in Red Alert where the searchlight has a timed ability that just removes a circular chunk of the FOW in it's range briefly. Still useful, but not a constant always on "map hack" type deal.

This. MP increase is not gonna cut it cuz OKW. A little fuel though, it's gonna delay their production a bit.

As a mainly OKW player, I think zero fuel either makes it overpowered, or confirms that it is a joke useless unit. Vast majority of team games I play, about 1% of those someone decides to use it. about 50% of those times though they don't use it properly.

It also has no weapons or even any special abilities. IMO it should cost munitions to focus on a particular spot for several seconds. Although that would make it too powerful and make certain doctrinal unlocks redundant.

Should honestly have been a utility halftrack with IR option as alternative to, say, reducing cooldowns of nearby infantry or providing transportation.

How about increasing its cost back to 30 fuel but giving it its RL role of an artillery spotter.

So allow it to call smoke and artylery barrages. Maybe also some kind of cordinated atak ability: Choose 1 unit which has increased accuracy for a short period of time.

Keep it free from fuel but increase MP to 500/600, or around 20 fuel.

IR + Stuka = cheat mode.

Yes, heavy investment for a constant recon and free recon.

And it's not like OKW float MP...

It's insanely cheap for it does, easy to replace, gives you fuel from salvage and it gives you recon recon all the time for 200MP while other factions must pay ammo, choose doctrine and abilites are only temporary.

Think about its ability.

You have found 2 Maxims and ZiS gun far away. Launch Stuka with great precision since you see them.
You just killed around 500-700 MP in 1 volley far behind enemies' lines without any risk from you and without reavling you plans by recon or flare.

Different factions thus different strengths, weaknesses and abilities. So just move along.

it is typically a unit that doesn't require any micro but gives you a lot of advantage.
Should cost munition for 20 sec with a cooldown.

Actually you put it next to your ISGs and let them work by themselves.

there's a bug with it that makes it even more OP, the searchlight will stop scanning but only scan the one spot like a motion sensor. This unit is not over powered, the unit is only good as the people who are using it.

Enemy sees searchlight going back and forth over Maxims and Zis then hears Rockets moves Maxims and Zis, you just wasted your Stuka strike...

The enemy can SEE your searchlight as this red strip moving over their stuff, it isn't like the flare where it is hard to tell if when an OKW player uses it. Also the range on the unit isn't that impressive on most big team game maps and on smaller games, most people want to reserve the manpower and pop cost for more infantry.

Yes do remember the OKW player is wasting pop on a unit with ZERO combat capabilities, give it 10 fuel cost and be done with this discussion.

Most people build one in any match above 1vs1. If you don't see its potential, that's your problem.
