Obersoldaten's name change.

another option would be something like "kommandosoldaten" or "elitekommando", which could refer to something like the brandenburg troop

For example, conscripts make no sense, all armies in WW2 were mostly conscripted, grenadiers aren't called recruits and neither are riflemen called draftees.
Jaeger light infantry G43 package also makes no sense.

This rank was given to soldiers with service experience (not necessarily combat) but who were deemed unfit for more demanding tasks. Instead of becoming a Gefreiter (corporal) they became Obersoldat (senior private). Holding this rank is the direct oposit of being elite or special.
Also the rank name of Obersoldat was only used by branches wich did not use other names. Like Oberschütze for the Infantry or Oberkanonier for Artillery for example. Being an Obersoldat means you are a average or below average soldier of a non combat branch...
obviously Obersoldaten in CoH2 are something different entirely.
The rank has been abolished after WW2. For a todays modern German it actually sounds silly.
While nouns can be created by merging nouns or nouns and adjectives puting "ober" in front of a noun to denominate it as somthing better is uncommon at the least in actual German. Especially not in contemporary language. If it was done in the past it usually has the literal meaning of "above" as physically higher or of a higher rank. A higher rank in a hierarchy. It doesn't mean elite or of better quality.
For a native German speaker of today it carries the tone of a mock word made up by an non German speaker to make something sound German, threatening and evil. The way it is commonly done in movies, computer games etc.
IMHO Honour Guard would be a better name. Its doesn't really fit to any Germany military unit or branch but it doesn't sound as silly. Concidering the fact that some officers have Obers as body guard honour guard would make some sense as well.
Elite Grenadiers, Elite Troops or something like this would fit. Veterans would also fit but I think this will lead to confusion.

This is modern actually very modern German.
Commando did not have the meaning of special operation troops in German until well after WW2. The German word for spec ops is Spezialeinheit. Wich by itself doesn't mean elite just special purpose. Another common term used was "z.b.V." wich means "zur besonderen Verwendung" literally: for special use.
A Kommando in German is a battle group. It doesn't have to be special or elite in any way.
The Obersoldaten are definetly not Brandeburger. These are recon and infiltration specialists not front line combat troops.
"Elitesoldaten" or "Elitetruppen" would be a fitting name though. It simply describes what the Obers are.
Another possible name would be: "Die Besten" the best.

Hwy is that?
"Jäger" while literally meaning hunter is the name for a special type of light Infantry in German. Traditional skirmishers and marksmen. Later high mobile non motorised infantry.
There is a reason why para and mountain troops are called "FallschirmJÄGER" and GebirgsJÄGER.
Upgrading Grenadiers with the G43 turns them into marksmen wich excel at mid and long range and skirmishing. The name Jaeger light infantry fits perfectly.

I don't know if troops like that existed in reality, but you could think of it as some kind of independently formed squad within a company using the best of the best battle hardened individuals to perform the most dangerous combat missions.

Obersoldat as a rank is nothing desirable or a sign of being a good Soldier.

What he said. Seriously l2wiki people (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_German_Army_ranks_and_insignia). English equivalent would be Senior private or Private first class (OR-1 senior).
If the name describes those Machines of death adequatly is a different question tho. Knights Cross Holders would be nice, cause it is a bad ass name.

Seriously, dude, stop posting on forums. Here we are deciding a new nane for Obersoldaten, not saying they're OP or not. In every freakin topic i enter i allways find you bitching about Axis. It's sad. Please, stop it.
Get real dude. We are not deciding anything and it would be a waste of resources to even change the name. The reason given by the op is plain wrong and he could have known if he would have put the effort to search for a minute. And you are delusional enough to describe what is going on here as decision making. It makes you look funny. What he did was a little trollish, but it was what it was. Unlike what you did. Which was also not contributing to the constrictive side of this mostly useless thread, but attacking someone personal.

Oberschützen
Both technical correct terms for the rank before the Sergeant.
Obersoldaten so, is a silly mix of random words.

Two things, rename thread to not sound as if it's even being considered by relic, and two how about a name that reflects the criminal nature of the organization. This thread is one of a couple recently that trouble me in the sense that some misguided folks think the SS were honourable, when chief players in the single largest racial hatred motivated and planned mass murder in human history. If you don't have the imagination to connect the reference of SS with obers as is, I recommend a liberation of Aushwitz map for 1v1, as that would be true representation. Funny how relic were kind enough to omit that from the campaign as the SS fled their crime, so whining about a name makes you pretty ungrateful.
Swiss.

Calling them Honour Guard is weird, Honour Guards aren't even top of the line combat troops, they are top of the line show-off troops, because let's face it, the purpose of honour guard units is to provide a good display. And I agree with the actual rank reference: Obersoldaten is anyone that has served long enough but lacked other qualifications to be promoted to corporal, but they wanted to give an "honorary" rank. The German army was like that.
I´ve never ever heard the term Obersoldat... and I´m German.YOu being German and your knowledge of a specific section of German (miltiary) history is a spurious relationship.
Also, I read somewhere that the Obersoldat rank (or -grenadier, -pionier, -fusilier) was awarded to those that simply had no leadership potential whatsoever. Anyone with an inkling of leadership potential would instead be promoted right to Gefreiter after a set period of time in service. Thus those ranked Obersoldat would really not be first rate troops..lol the latest batch of soldaten sucks so bad, they had to make up a new rank to make them feel good!
