Today's update isn't the 'October Patch' - it was to introduce some new FREE maps for the community and give them a sneakpeak of some of the AA content for the free weekend. The official October update is in the final stages of internal testing and contains a number of balance updates, bug fixes and new features.

EDIT: I am actually very happy about this. We were left in the dark previously with just the maps being implemented, but now there is word on an upcoming patch. Thank you Cynthia for shedding light on what is to be expected

There is a free weekend in Steam right now, so new players might be encouraged by the fact that the game is constantly updated and the new stuff is added.
Also, so relic can say such bollocks as how many updates have been released and how much they care due to adding them.
