In my opinion best time area for more modernd coh would be between 1960-80, as there are still lots of experimental vehicles and weapons that could have potential to allow intresting gameplay and variety. There can still be smgs and flamethrowers, both apc, aa tanks, armored cars and personel carriers excist and helicopters are a thing, allowing new twist into offmap strikes.
I think the border is the Caribbean crisis of 1962, there are no Main Battle Tanks, guided missiles, but there are lots of heaps of various armored vehicles and early helicopters.
Korean would be a great setting, not too advanced weapons so easy to maintain coh flavour and feels. Also quite critically, both sides were somewhat evenly matched, so its kinda easy to feel comfortable with equal sides in pitched battle, which is what makes WW2 setting so intriguing.
The Korean War is very limited: SU-76M and T-34-85 for North Korea, M24, M4, M26 for the USA. There is not even a unit for commanders. There are no opportunities for DLC: Chinese "volunteers" - a huge amount of infantry, South Korea - US equipment.
I know, I know. It is a shame, instead of the really interesting games, EA makes an absolute terrible game, with the goal of getting the maximum profit. It was just an idea for a cool strategy.
Seeing the video of one of my favorite games: Battlefield 2142, I thought: - Hey, this will make a great strategy. Now, instead of abstract Victory Point, you need to capture rocket launchers that will reduce Titan protection, this is ideal for the Company of Heroes mechanics. It would be great if Relic could make a Battlefield strategy.
And other threads describe penals into guards meta. Damn this forum.
And this is true, I do not see the Guard in
team games the game, Penalties perform the AT role quite well, especially AT explosives. Usually people play Penals which are improved on PTRS after the arrival of the Shock Troops or as my typical assembly: ZiS-3 and conscripts AT grenade and Shock Troops as the main infantry.
A pure conscript game (even a PTRS conscript who is a good commander) is super rare. Guards are rare.
Damn, how I miss those days, how epic and bloody it was with a lot of heavy tanks. The game has become much more boring due to the loss of many mechanic. It may be more balanced but much more boring.
The most interesting battles were very long ago, when it was possible to simultaneously have many heavy tanks at the same time. It was super intense, bloody, and very, very fun. I remember my friends and I won the fight when we only had one VP left, and the enemy has more than a hundred.
Or just delete Penals. Now they overlap the Conscripts and partly the Guards (I don’t see the Guard at all in team games at the moment, if someone needs PTRS, they just take Penals.)
With your proposal, they overlap the Shock Forces.
- Recruits are renamed to the Rifle squad: they will receive an SVT-40 upgrade and a frag grenade, the merger will be removed, the main infantry
- Guard: ranged combat, anti-tank support
- Shock Troops: CQC assault unit will receive penals explosives.
- Penalties are redundant and overlap units and will overlap units. Transferred to the ability to "rapid conscript" renamed to conscripts and receive a merger and Molotov, become Osttruppen analogue.
these changes REINFORCE their existing role that they were not meeting. they are not supposed to be usf riflemen, they are something else. they are support. a 7 man con squad will be able to fully recrew an mg or pak or mortar without losing a squad, that alone is HUGE. wiping an mg42 and instantly have a 6 man squad on it? additionally they will reinforce for cheaper. that shouldnt need additional explanation... you want the 8upgrade to remake the conscript, thats not what its doing. its making them better at what they are supposed to do. they will defend longer and reinforce cheaper and merge more efficiently. they are bodies to mold into what you need on the battlefield. they will keep your fighting infantry on the field, they will build you sandbags, deny you cover, snare you tanks. all the things they do now, but with less bleed and more firepower. im not sure what you are against here.
cons are supposed to always be useful no matter what you use them to support- and thats the key here, THEY are the support, not the other units. they are supposed to be the heart of your army, but not the star. they make everything else shine.
From the above, we can conclude that the Conscripts is still not needed in more than one quantity. To throwing AT grenades to him add the ability to seize weapons without losing a squad. But it never bothered me, I’ll just build a fresh squad and send it to capture or I can sacrifice current squad, because besides AT the grenades in the late game are useless.
