Stug was initially for infantry support. Later uparmored versions with long guns did ok against tanks, but like was mentioned from covered positions.
You want to see real counterpart to Su85 you look at Jagdpanzer4.
"Did okey against tanks", are you joking?
StuG III was the most successful tank destroyer in the entire war.
StuG "kill-counts" were only second to the Tiger aces.
Till 1943 (and maybe beyond that) no other armored fighting vehicle in the entire war achieved a "kill-death" ratio as high as the StuG.
The StuG was more than just "okey" versus tanks. /rant
But yeah, both StuG and t34 require an overhaul. I think making those machines useable will solve the PIV vs SU spam fest we have right now.
Surely Fallschirmjäger would be the most popular choice.
But I dont quite see the point behind Stoßtruppen.
What kind of unit are they supposed to represent? I've heard they are supposed to be SS-Men? But Panzergrenadiers allready fill that position in CoH2.
eh.
What I'd like to see is Gebirgsjäger.
Resistent to cold, dont get slowed down by difficult terrain, are less vulnerable while vaulting, maybe they could be upgraded with a lite Mortar or cloak in deep snow for ambushing?
Also I want them to shout "Dont Shoot! I'm not German! I'm Austrian!" while on retreat, I heard PoW liked to do that back then^^
76 offered enough storage to carry over a hundred shells? Impresive.
The only other "tanks" I knew would do that were the StuGs but those would actually cover the whole floor the crew was standing on to get from 40 to 100 grenades.
Edith:
but yeah, I dont think I'd scale the AP effectiveness of a t34 (in this game) by just those 4 shells. Especially considering how famous t34s were for missing^^
To be fair if you've got in a good defensive position and the Soviets are just sending endless waves of T34s towards you, of course you'll get a lot of tank kills. It's like claiming that because Rudel was the highest scoring pilot, the JU87 was therefore a viable plane.
/off-topic rambling
Sure. No doubt the StuG was alot more viable in defensive fightin than in offensive buuut
the StuG was the highest scoring tank killer till 1943, before Germany was in fighting retreat and in " a defensive position with the Soviets just sending endless waves of T34s,"
Like I said, this is a game, game balance doesnt necesarry have to refelct reality and I would be tottally fine with the SU beeing a more powerful tankdestroyer
IF
the StuG could actually also take the role of an assault gun or atleast be cheap enough to mass produce.
why is stug being compared to all kinds of late tanks?
ITs main enemy are Su76 and T34, both of which it beats hands down.
You are not supposed to attack Su85 with it, never mind heavy tanks.
The Stugs "problem" is that Pz4 is so outwordly OP while costing not much more. Oh and Ostwind as well.
Why are you not supposed to attack SU-85s with it?
StuG and SU should be very equal machines.
In fact the StuGs armour, profile and optics were quite a bit better than the SU's.
All in All the StuG was one of the most successful tank-killers of the entire war.
No other machine got so many kills during the war like the StuG.
The only "tank"Aces more successful than the StuG Aces were the Tiger Aces.
You say one just shouldnt be able to face a SU-85 with a StuG.
Why? Both were very similar machines- but for some reason we shouldnt be able to "compare" the StuGs performance to the SU's? And at the same time the SU-85 chews up everything that isnt an Elephant. ( And even those suffer like hell as the SU can do immense damage to it when they come in pairs . and they usually do )
This is a game and I dont expect total realism, but if one the ( some would argue THE ) most successful TankDestroyer of the entire war can just take on the weakest, most outdated Soviet Machines ( that Soviet players dont even bother to build to beginn with) , something is off.
