Note: I posted this on Reddit first, a couple hours ago. I didn't get a decent response there. Thanks for taking the time to read, sorry if you've already seen this and ignored.
TLDR - do you think there's a way to revitalize the community, to bring in lapsed players and / or attract new players?
Hey everyone,
I'm an avid fan of Company of Heroes 2. I make no bones about it being my favorite game right now (not having played the first iteration, mind you) and, while I have a great time playing 1v1 and 2v2 games, I can't help but wish that there were more people both playing and in the community.
I try to check the # of active players of Company of Heroes and COH2 routinely when I play, and while it's heartening that the community doesn't appear to be shrinking (I routinely see around 5-6000 players during peak hours and 2000 players around 10PM EST when I play) this number is not... large. A bigger community would mean quicker matchmaking, and more close matches when matchmaking. It'd give me more people to shoot the breeze about COH2 with, and bring more mapmakers into the mix. Tournaments might even happen more often.
I know there has been quite a bit of controversy regarding the game, from the "BadComedian" review of the single player to diehard COH1 fans preferring the prequel (COH 1 population is usually roughly 1/2 of COH2 population when I check) and the game's combat model can take a bit of time to learn, but I humbly think there's a lot to love about this game.
I think the Battle Servers will increase the satisfaction of the current community, as the Workshop/mapmaking support did. I think that observer mode would help attract more interest in tournaments and livestreaming the game (again, perhaps mostly amongst the current crop of players) and keeping the game 'sticky' to current customers is a good thing. But what about actually gaining new players? The free weekend seemed to help somewhat, though I don't think the community is substantially larger than it was before. The 'rivalry' between Creative Assembly and Relic is entertaining, and will be good for viewership/game mindshare.
Do you have any thoughs? I'm not (necessarily) looking for game feature update suggestions, there's already plenty of talk about that. But I do love this game, and think it'd be better with more people queuing for matches.
Thanks for taking the time to read.

I feel like the vanilla roster of commanders in COH2 can counter any of the DLC commanders just fine. I don't think the "Pay to win" idea translates to balance as much as enjoyment.
The thing is, even if I have to pay $4 for a commander that's the price of a latte and a latte only lasts minutes. Relic has been patching and improving this game at a fervorous pace, interacting with us on the forums and listening to our incessant whining and even appeasing some of it.
I agree with this 100%. I mostly use Guards Motor Coordination or Anti Infantry tactics. The Shock Army is pretty good but not even in my normal commander loadout. I use Urban Defense, but mostly in 3v3 where I can play a supporting role to other players. I think people are overreacting a bit, and as someone else mentioned, feeling like collectors who want a complete set of something.
I agree prices might need to be looked at, and the Tiger Ace is a little worrisome, but for the most part I think the p2w argument is way overblown. |
In my experience, PanzerGrens or AssGrens that can get up close by avoiding its narrow arc of fire will make short work of a Maxim, to say nothing of scout cars, halftracks or the Ostwind. Its quick setup time is still often slow enough to avoid though in my experience. |
Posted this from my phone at work. Hope this made sense... :/
Divorcing the idea of asymmetrical balance from COH2 and applying to to StarCraft 2, we see that there are few if any direct comparisons you can make in terms of unit roles or effectiveness at those roles, or methods of carrying out those roles.
Zerglings are light swarming and harassment units, while Zealots are damage dealers and soakers, and Marines are general purpose damage dealers. Zerg have a tier 1/2/3 that allows them to unlock units within that tier, while Terrans are forced to build Barracks/Factory in that order to get to Starport, and Protoss have their t1 and can then choose air or heavy armor. There are analogs, like tier systems and buildings that unlock different unit types, but each faction deals with them uniquely, in a way that provides balance without making all factions behave the same.
For symmetrical balance, look at Planetary Annihilation. There's (atm at least) just 1 pool of units, and no real difference between each players' tanks, bots, planes etc.
in CoH2, factions commanders behave differently, tiers behave differently, and units have different roles. The t70 doesn't really have a direct comparison for the Ostheer, for instance, or the Ostwind, or how the Soviet scout car behaves differently from the Ostheer. Likewise, soviet commanders tend to have access to more AoE, like the SU76 or Katyusha, while the Ostheer has units like the Artillery Field Officer. |

Well i'just finished reading it. I feel it's genuine and it's look awesome !
With the veterancy changes, strangely the factions seem more balanced.
In addition to the 4 free cmrds,i think they will also put 2 new cmrds for sale : the German Air Superiority & the Soviet Advanced Warfare. (i will gladly buy them, if they are for sale)
Thx Devs to have listen to us !!! Long live to Coh2 !!!
This was also my impression. Can't wait to get my hands on some new commanders, maps, unit dynamics (thanks to vet changes) etc ![:) :)](/images/Smileys/smile.gif) great update Relic! |

Wah wah... Soviet won every game in OMGPOP vs AndyisRippin, which btw was a great series.
Can't wait for next week! |
lol, by any chance do u have a video link for that?
It wasn't a video. IIRC it was someone on my Facebook feed sharing a link a couple months ago. I read the comments under that link and was pretty shocked.

I dont agree with giving any more units HTD.
The ability, even nerfed as it is now, still defies a core concept of COH style RTS games: use of the cover system. Running at a squad and then pressing HTD in an open field to magically get cover is not micro that should be reinforced. I'd love to see HTD replaced with buffs that allows conscripts to scale into the match
I agree with this. Not, I imagine, that anyone is interested in my opinion on the matter. The cover system is one of the things that defines COH and COH2 imho. |
As a noob, I was quite happy with how I dealt with the German strategy in this game. My control of my units (particularly the SU-76s I fielded) could certainly have been better, but I am overall happy with how I responded to my opponent's strategy.
Thanks, those who watch ![:) :)](/images/Smileys/smile.gif) |
Usually I end up getting mad at myself for not being good enough at the game, or at my lack of foresight (not preparing for the semi-inevitable Flame Halftrack etc).
Occasionally, in team games, I'll get mad at my teammates for not adequately helping deal with enemy units, but I've been playing less 3v3 lately to keep that to a minimum.
But yeah, people get really invested in their performance in games, and it can cause tensions to run pretty high. I've seen people threaten to *curb stomp* the balance designer on the COD games for changes to how the weapons work. People get *crazy* invested in their games. |
