March is a month of rabid community speculation over whether or not there's a CoH2 team left at Relic and if the game will ever see another patch.
Meanwhile there's the ongoing wait for the announcement of "the next game" which is pretty well overdue for Relic. |
Whatever or not this will be a second Relic studio for COH3+COH2 or the whole COH franchise outsourced to CA, we will have to wait and see.
Can you imagine Creative Assembly making a CoH game?
It would have an amazing pitch, but most of the features would be removed before launch. It also wouldn't work properly until a year after launch, at which point they'd drop support in favour of making CoH 3.5 which would be charged at full price.
I speak as someone who was burned by both Empire and Rome 2. |
Welcome to the "disappointed by royal arty" club, where you want it to work but always end up with inevitable disappointment.
The doctrine basically ceases to exist after the first two abilities, and even then you basically need anvil to make concentrated fire worthwhile. Try firing it at a truck without it for example - you'll be lucky if you get 1 direct hit out of 6 shells.
The valentine is just bad I'm afraid. Ignoring that it comes too late to be anything beyond a fog of war scanner, it's just worse than the AEC at every thing else on top of that. It's largely down to the gun damage - a mere 80 compared to the AEC's 120 and tanks which are generally 160. The low damage makes it useless against inf since it needs a direct hit to kill and has little splash damage. It also makes it largely useless against vehicles.
The Sexton is genuinely a case of "how did they design it this poorly?". It has low range, low barrage capability (fires less shells than the priest), low damage (for artillery), isn't cheap enough to spam and even if you could they come in at 14 pop cap each anyway.
As for perimeter overwatch, well, if you have too much munitions and want to turn your map orange it's great! For everything else it's completely pointless. By the time your howitzers turn and fire, whatever they were going to shoot at will have moved. Not that it matters much, the 25pdrs won't hit them anyway. That's if you're lucky enough to get a round off. It's more than likely that they'll have decapped the territory by the time the guns turn rendering the whole thing pointless.
Yes, I also have a soft spot for this commander. I badly want it to work. But the flaws with it, and the lackluster performance of the 25pdrs, valentine and sexton has glaringly obvious since launch yet the only change has been a slight CP reduction for the Valentine. Ultimately if you win with this commander, chances are you would have won without any commander anyway.

A slight increase to fuel cost (10-15) for Cromwell is hardly a nerf to UKF armor.
That would put it almost identical in cost to a panzer 4 but without the pintle mount MG, doctrinal synergy (smoke, scopes, hull down vs command aura, repairs) or vet blitz and armour upgrade. |
-Provide the 17-Pounder with the same ability the JT has (activated munitions ability to shoot through shot-blockers). Would help to make Anvil more appealing.
I find it telling that people don't realise it already has this. Shows how much it's used. It's the vet 1 ability. It also desperately needs a pop cap reduction.
The brace nerf would only work if engineers didn't take extra damage while repairing. Even then I doubt brace would see more than one use. Really, I don't think brace needs to be nerfed at all. After all, the emplacement can't do anything while braced. |
On the topic of Churchills, I'm struggling to see why the main gun is a nerfed version of the Cromwell's gun (historically they're the same weapon). The stats are nearly identical, but the Churchill has a longer reload for some reason. If anything it means the vet 1 hull defense guns are just making up for the damage lost from the main gun.
Likewise, the Cromwell has better veterancy bonuses at vet 3. It's just one more reason why Cromwells are a better choice that the Churchill.
If they keep the current Churchill cost, I'd argue at the very least they should up the rate of fire to match the Cromwell. It might help the Churchill keep pace in the end game a bit better. |
If they are killing support I'd be very disappointed for a few reasons. Not least because it means Relic will have only supported the brits expansion for 6 months before dropping it. It also doesn't help that for 3 of those months the consensus was that balance changes were on the back burner due to ESL.
On balance it isn't terrible, but as I said before there's quite a few things that just feel unfinished, or could use a tune up. My personal favourite is the Royal Artillery Regiment - known to be pretty terrible from release, plenty of room to bring it up to par without making it OP - and yet it's still lingering. There's also the somewhat incomplete OKW revamp and vet tuning to deal with.
I get that Relic will be moving support onto another game (DoW3 in all likelihood) but I hope they don't abandon CoH2 completely. |
Interesting, now if they allow you to fire in the FoW again artillery reg+anvil might actually be worth it for peppering med trucks and command tank blobs
Really my main beef with the 25pdrs is just how slow and obvious they are, you walk up, throw a smoke grenade which is pretty much a giant sign for "I am firing here" and then 10 seconds later something happens.
Comet willie pete still seems like the safer and more reliable team weapon counter
Royal Arty regiment can blind fire again. Haven't really tested it with anvil against med truck inf blobs though. |
Hmmm.... Do they blind the Schwerer too?
Given the proximity of either a sniper or an infantry section to the barrage you'd think chucking a smoke shell in there would be a no brainer...
Pretty certain they don't.
There's actually quite a few different 25pdr abilities in the files, mostly unused. For example there's AP shells and smoke shells. |
It would be very disappointing if this was the end of life for CoH2. There are just so many things that could be worked on - stuff like the valentine, sexton and greyhound that have next to no use currently. |
