COH2 has its vociferous afficionados. I'm not one of them, try as I might to want to love it. If it weren't for its WWII constume and inducement as a COH's successor, as an RTS it'd rate a major sales fail IMV.

CoH2 is broken and unfixable. It is a clickfest. CoH isn't. This is the primary underlying 'just something I can't quite put my finger on' reason people who loved COH don't enjoy COH2.

As is apparent, CoH was left broken to coerce its user base to migrate to the new money spinner, CoH2. That didn't go according to plan. Broken as it is, CoH is just more fun to play than COH2.

CoH2's raison detre is selling DLC for SEGA/Relic and it shows.

It's nigh on impossible to find anything on film 'approved' for mainstream consumption that is either accurate or sufficiently impartial to present truth or fact by the time it is selectively edited and the narrative is applied. In the case of the Great War, this becomes almost comical due to the dearth of actual cinematic footage a function of the policy, practicality and technology of that time, necessitating acted 're-enactments' so removed from anthing resembling reality and pitched at a contemporary audience most of whom have never done national service who are so generationally distant and removed from the mores, so beleagured with the dross they have been fed, comprehension or understanding of the time represents an impossible objective for most.

Books lend themselve better to the retelling of truth, but an accurate picture still needs to be built up over time by proper investigative inquiry by the discriminating mind. Not everyone is capable of the latter, and most are too lazy to bother with the former. And oftimes, like art, a photograph does not encompass the all as an impressionist's painting might.

Of course, even books can still be tainted, especially those by authors who are plagurising 'historians' incapable of original research or sufficiently sly to not go against the tide knowing full well the punishment which awaits for those who dare do that.

The further the distance of time from the event, the greater the conflict of interest or there is to be gained from preserving the status quo of 'accepted history' of the event, the more distorted and one eyed the retelling and thus publically accepted view.

A sad indictment, but if you want to see the mentality of the planet today, go and view the absurdity of the number of hits on any of Nicky Minaj's trash like this (523 million ...WTF!) and you'll understand why most of the population can be duped most of the time. Compare the interest with the number of hits on this very important speech, and ask youself, which one is shaping history and which should people be interested in as it will affect their lives and the lives of others significantly. In a few years, even with access too it, the majority of Minaj viewing morons with not have viewed it and all too happily be spoon fed whatever nonsense the favourably scripted version retells.

Nevertheless there are some worthwhile reads around, most of those about the Great War and having been written long long ago by the actual participant combatants without a self serving axe to grind. The mass hysteria fed by constant Allied, yes Allied propaganda leading up to and during the second world war saw to it that little reliable in the way of truth or accuracy in the retelling of events of the second world war was or is available. Even Guy Gibson's retelling of his time with bomber command flying Hampdens elucidating that horror and stupidity was censored from his manuscript by the publishers never surfacing to see light of day until a unabridged edition quite recently. Whether it is still the full meat 'n taters or not one would not know as I have never sighted the original manuscript and we can't ask him. Even so, the submitted manuscript would still have been written with a view by himself as to what he could tell, or not, that which would be acceptable to his audience that they would be prepared to hear and accept it at the time. Here's a fact I'll bet few of you know which you won't find in "The World at War" or other usual sources. Generally reported as either KIA or MIA 'lost on operations', how many of you knew that Guy Gibson was actually shot down and killed by friendly fire a returning RAF bomber misidentifying his similarly homebound pathfinder Mosquito as a enemy Nachtjäger? FACT.

Here's another fact. Regardless the pretentious assignation of the genre title, there is nothing in the way of a 'documentary' made for commercial consumption that isn't compromised by either prejudice of the production team be it those paying the bill or director, the censorship by weight of going against the popular view, or some other conflict of interest whose self-interest the truth disserves ensuring attack or denial of distribution by the usual agencies.

Afterthoughts? (If you actually watched the entire 45ish minutes)

I did. An entertaining speaker. You got the subject header right, "food for thought". It's certainly invited me to revisit the topic.

But that said, whilst I take on board facts that to the average GI, quite understandably every German tank was a 'Tiger' just as to every English civilian and average schoolboy, every British fighter was a 'Spitfire' and anything seen going down or crashing had to be a Messerschmitt or Heinkel. e.g. There are two hackneyed pieces of Brit original footage -included in the World at War series DVDs, where the narrator's enthusiastic voiceover is celebrating the downing of German aircraft where in fact they are respectively a Spitfire (into the sea) and a Hurricane (plummeting vertically into the ground) subsequently exploding in a gigantic fireball.

There are just too many anecdotal accounts of tank vs tank engagements from personnel in the field which suggest the historical revision through researching statistics doesn't quite reveal the whole story here. However, the official casualty statistics the speaker presents, if they are to be believed accurate, do warrant closer inspection of the 'death trap' and ineffiacy of the Sherman's gun hearsay.

Different story at engagement ranges in the East vs bocage however, where the advantage of the Panther's LL and Tiger's 88 could be used of advantage, especially in defence as is evidenced both by anecdotal and statistical evidence. Lots there to review.

If you had spent five minutes actually googling the "Jäger Rapport"

This should be moved to a thread of its own, but as you've kicked this ball into the court, other people need to be aware of how you've been wilingly deceived before it is.

Google the "Jaeger Report" document. Actually sighted a full hard copy of the alleged original have you? As for that drivel presented in English on the JVL site, the report would not have been written in the English. Daniel Keren's 'fingerprint' is so many Googled prioritised hit results. Look at the quoted sources. You can't truly be serious can you?

Now a few inconvenient truths. This is what real research will reveal.

Your alleged evidence the Jaeger Report is held in the closed archives in Federal Germany which has laws banning investigation or acceptance of other than their fairytale version of events. They imprison for long terms anyone questioning their version of truth events. So does Austria. Starting to smell a rat?

The so called Jaeger Report has been there since 1963, four years after it was suddenly "discovered" by the Soviets in their archives at the height of the Cold War in 1959. Karl Jaeger 'committed suicide' on 22 June 1959. Do the arithmetic. How convenient. The "Jaeger Report" is tainted with all the tells of yet another Soviet forgery for which the regime was reknown.

No mass graves have been shown to support the 'Jaeger Report'.

It's just another forgery, a lie perpetuated as truth for the gullible to gobble up, lacking any actual substantive evidentiary support. It'd be thrown out of any court, except perhaps a German, Austrian or Israeli one. If you consider that evidence, you probably also still believe concentration camp inmates were rendered into soap too.

Ultimately, ask yourself cui bono?

No, it's not "evidence". What it actually is is typed document whose provenance is highly questionable alleged to have been attributable to Jaeger.

Actually, Jaeger said nothing. He was dead. The proponents alleging it a true record attributing him authorship have a gaping plot hole in their story. As I said, cui bono.

The German soldier generally was much more disciplined than the soldiers of any other nation. Evidence abound for this. Gehorsham. It's inculcated. If you do some original research, it will quickly be revealed who committed the more indescribable atrocities. Don't kid yourself it was only the other side. I personally knew many soldiers and airmen from that period who told me things they did or experienced first hand.

Allied moral high ground? Let me see now.
