I think we should leave it alone. I'm not exactly in favour if devolving the game. Not to mention that luck plays an important part of war. Stops the game from being stale and allows players with enough luck to have a chance of turning things around.
Don't deny it, Dangerous-Cloth! You surely had moments where Lady Luck showed you some love and bailed you out of bad situations. Remember the relief of those moments? Do you really want to throw those wonderful moments away from all future matches?
Essentially, it's a new round the 25 Pounders at your base will fire when you upgrade to Anvil Tactics. They are used as the first rounds fired by the 25 Pounder, followed by six HE rounds from each gun when you throw down Flares with your Infantry Sections or Sniper.
Aye, about that. I was thinking that Creeping Barrage for the 25 Pounders would have been better on the Artillery Regiment Commander as a replacement ability to the useless one the Valentine Tank has for making a Sexton shoot further (Wastes a lot of Pop Cap). But that's a topic for another day.
Nice idea, but...
The Brits are so extremely long-range combat oriented, that even in offensive (which in fact usually looks more like "stand in cover, force a retreat, move forward a bit and repeat") it might actually work against them
I can see what you are saying but from a defensive maneuvering standpoint, they would work quite well. The British Infantry are very vulnerable when out of cover and their moving accuracy sucks. The smoke helps give them more opportunity to re-position when things get dicey in clearings and such. It also forces the Germans to back off while the HE rounds are falling.
I'm sure we can all agree that the 25 Pounder, unless you go Anvil, is a nearly useless artillery gun. It's accuracy is terrible, it's AOE is terrible and only good for making light cover craters.
Whereas is you go Anvil, you get an Air-burst Rounds that temporarily disables tanks and suppress infantry. Invaluable for defense. Go Hammer Tactics and you get nothing useful towards the offensive nature of Hammer in terms of the 25 Pounder. It's quite unfortunate...
So I decided to look online to see what kind of Munitions a 25 Pounder can use but couldn't find White Phosphorous rounds in their inventory. Would have been nice for clearing garrisons. Though White Smoke seems to be there. So I was thinking, "Hey, wouldn't that be useful in offensives?
Much like the Airburst Rounds, they could have several Smoke Rounds fired first, blinding the enemy, followed by the normal HE rounds, no additional accuracy. It certainly would be true to the Hammer Tactics design and help free up Pop Cap for the British, taking away the Mortar Pit or the Cromwell as a requirement for dropping smoke.
Part of the problem with calliope is that due to its high durability it can fire devastating fire from point blank range. My suggestion would be to greatly increase minimum range so that it is unable to fire point blank.
It's certainly the most sensible way to change it. You have my vote.
What a dream come true to have Incendiary Rockets on the Katyusha! Thank you! Been wanting something like that since I found out that they had those types of munitions. Haha.
If we went the route of removing Auto-Fire, I'd hope we at least get an Overwatch function. Designate an area of maybe 50 Range where you tell your Mortar Crew, "Alright lads, if anybody comes to this location, pound them into submission!" Which would make the game a bit more realistic!
Though I can't agree with removing Auto-Fire from all Mortars. They are there to ease the burden of your forces, not add to them through a micro tax. Think of how much attention you'll have to give them when using a Soviet Mortar for example with 4 rounds for every barrage. Might be an overnerf. :/
Only if you could choose between a mortar pit and a mobile mortar like you can choose between the aec or the bofors...
Admittedly, this would be a nice excuse to add a mobile alternative but alas... We are years past the Beta stages. Would have loved to see a Universal Carrier armed with a Mortar.
Just replace them Jesus christ the solution is staring you people in the fucking faces but no, the change is too "radical".
You people are unbelievable.
Every suggestion made is shot down because of differing views, not because of valid points.
And you need to learn about business and Relic's wishes. They designed a Faction with Emplacements being a core feature and will never agree to get rid of them, no matter how much begging is thrown their way. Mobile core alternatives are never going to happen. Call me a cynic but the only way it will happen is through a new Commander (Would love to see the Universal Mortar Carrier too) but there's no point holding out hope for them. Want a mobile mortar? Steal one off the enemy because that's the closest you are going to get. Changes to what we currently have is far more likely to happen.
