What do we think about...
"For example, soldiers are more than disposable grunts — keep them alive and their skills improve over time."
This is a bit like CoHO, right? Or is it a campaign thing only?
My views are mixed.
1. I really like the idea of precious, much-loved and nurtured units
But on the other hand...
2. Won't they make MP a nightmare from a competitive POV?
3. Will they be allowed in ladder automatches?
4. I suppose the desire to preserve veteran units will change the gameplay dynamic and even the metagame... people will play differently to preserve their pet unit(s)
5 But man, I hated those CoHO assault jeeps.

"No! Don't tell me the Reds have Staghounds too!" |
"Ivan's snipers were easier to spot in the alpha!" |
^ It's a big 'ol Tier One... 3 x pios, bike, 2 x volks, MG, sniper, MG.
It works, but you have to be aggressive and hunt down / decimate that first Tommy recce squad.
On Ango it's very effective, I'd always struggled with Brits but this allowed me to hold his teching back until I'd got out my PAKs and grens.
I think my opponent wanted to play a more mobile game, but being forced back made him camp which was to my advantage. |
Please take this post in the spirit in which it is intended, and I understand that some folks simply won't care less. That's cool.
But me? I like military history, esp. WW2.
The liberties the original CoH took with this were perfectly okay for me, because the Normandy Campaign / NW Europe theatre was the end-game for the Western Allies. So Pershings, RR's, Ostwind fleets (despite their nonsensical inclusion) made sense within the internal consistency of CoH, i.e. the verisimilitude jived for me as a player. The average one-hour long 2 v 2 has as much armour in it (for two company-sized Wehr units) as a division in late 1944.
So what?
Well, CoH2 covers June 1941 - April 1945. Units, doctrines, uniforms and all of the rest of it changed dramatically. Soviet light armour deployed against the German Schwerpunkt in 1941 was utterly obsolete by 1943-44. Similarly, the light tank fleet that motored across the Ukraine was utterly different from that at Kursk.
So, how do the CoH2 devs / designers (who I know love military history and have put a shit-load of work into getting this right) display that variety whilst maintaining some sense of verisimilitude within the game they have created? Does it matter? Who cares?
I do care, but am also chilled out enough to understand that liberties _have_ to be taken. But where is the line? Are small BA-20s storming Berlin in 1945 something that bothers you? Or Panzer II rolling eastwards in 1943? |
Personally I've always found the forum format / software for the official forums horrible. And that dark background? Yeuch.

Worked for me too, tx RiflesReady. |
CoH servers appear to be down as at 14:24 GMT...
Is it:
(a) Routine maintenance?
(b) Earthquake / dinosaur invasion / UFO abduction?
(c) PREPARATION WORK FOR COH2 BETA???
YOU DECIDE! |
I have just made level 10 on automatch 1 v 1 as Wehr versus a level 10 Brit who didn't (a) build a single Stag and (b) never accused me of hacking, even when I V1'd him using a heroically concealed sniper.
Given my lack of skill I am chuffed to bits by reaching level 10, shout-out to Inverse (again) as I followed his anti-Brit strat / build.

I approve of Thirsty Thursday and am, indeed, a subscriber.
Could you please commentate on one of those interminably cheesy maps that I hate, like Achelous River or The Scheldt, and mercilessly lampoon the Basic Match Heroes who think that playing the same map over and over again on basic and attaining high level is some sort of metric of skill.
Please capture their witty repartee and banter and comment on it in your own inimitable style.
As I am usually drunk, I think I am part of your target audience.
