The thing did need a nerf. I'm all for anti-blob tools, but insta-wiping flames of doom sucked when Ostheer had it, and it still sucked when Soviets had it. We'll see if 40% is too much; I'd have preferred 20-30% and a modifier against blobbed infantry if at all possible.

Infantry support gun is needed as mentioned above. It also costs a lot more than a 240 mp mortar so it should perform accordingly.

And the courier I don't play large team games often but I find the walking Stuka inconsistent and overpriced. It either whipes or it does nothing at all and comes with a crippling fuel cost.

Depends on map. On decent open maps, it's kinda limited. On shit, cramped maps it's godly.

I find that the two new factions are extremely map-dependant as a rule.

I think the problem is more of a lategame (and probably team game too) one. Sure, vet 3 rifles with BARs or vetted Shocks can stand up to them if you're lucky, but attrition is a thing, especially given the stupid retreat modifier. Almost all allied infantry needs vet or upgrades to be up to par; Obers are already very powerful right out of the game and only become more so as they gain vet.

I also reject the notion that they're hard counter to all infantry similar to AT guns. First, AT guns are easy to kill, second some tanks are very good vs infantry and can stand up to them, third AT guns actually require micro against a half decent opponent. Obers you can simply make them stand there or plop them in cover and they will slaughter anything but their dedicated counters.

I'd remove the awful retreat modifier and either lower their durability, damage, or increase price. They don't need a massive nerfbat, but they need to be weaker out of the gate, and the retreat modifier is just removing an horrible idea.

Aren't they supposed to lose to rifles 1v1, what with being cheaper, not needing fuel investment to get AT and the OKW having a bevy of very strong AI infantry already? Volks are supposed to be fodder until they can support mid-game with shrecks.

And I never found them useless anyway. Plop them in cover, and they can easily support the Sturmpios and beat badly positioned rifles by themselves, and the grenade can get handy too.

Positioning.

Close range Sturmpios beat rifles.
Mid range it's pretty equal.
Long range Rifles beat Sturmpios.

Besides that as was said, Volley fire.
1 Rear Echelon + 1 Rifle easily beat 2 Sturmpios with Volley fire. Even one Rear Echelon sometimes manages to beat 2 Sturmpios if you know how to use it.

Whu? 1 rear echelon beats 2 Sturms? Replay please. You were either playing against the Easy AI or the guy just left. Volley fire only pins one squad (and is quasi nullified by green cover) and Sturms otherwise make mincemeat of RE in a hurry even at midrange.

Listen, I'm not talking about Sturms used by a-move newbies. People who are used to assault infantry and know how to use them can get a hell of a lot of mileage with a unit that almost has PGren level of firepower this early.

@DarthBong: What do you suggest, leaving cover and fleeing? Unless the Sturms are very far away and/or not advancing, that's asking to be shredded. It also gives up map control, which is a potentially serious loss against OKW.

I'm not saying Sturms are crazy OP, they're definitely beatable. They just seem really strong at the moment. We'll see how the meta develops, but I think it will end up with them being nerfed as well as having their price drop. Having a stronger starting unit is fine, having one that straight up beats most T1 infantry in most scenarios seems a bit much.
