Well before I play tournaments I would have to start playing the game again....

1. I have a negligible chance of winning. It isn't worth the several hour time investment to lose games. I would get more satisfaction out of just playing an automatch game.

2. Non-building green cover still has seemingly negligible effects for the infantry in it. Until green cover is useful I don't know if I would come back to the game. Everyone pretends this is a very tactical game which it won't really feel like until cover matters. When I purchased the game I was hoping it was more like an RTS version of Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood. That is a game that required actual suppression and flanking - finding cover that gave you a sight line into the enemy's cover while they are suppressed. Characters were highly survivable in cover and it took actual work to get kills. Characters not in cover are quickly gunned down.

3. More importantly, 1v1 just isn't a fun game type (for me) and I won't be motivated to play until the map pool is improved. 1v1 maps are generally too big and there really aren't good ways to establish a front line, so tactical game play doesn't form and the rounds are mainly run and gun through the entire game. There are a couple of adequately sized maps that I can enjoy playing on but the bad outweighs the good here.

4. I would be more motivated to play in a 2v2 tournament. The 2v2 maps are appropriately sized for the number of competitors. Front lines are established and the game play has a more tactical feeling and can be enjoyable. For this to happen though I would have to A) start playing again and B) find a regular partner that could be somewhat competitive with me.

When I last played I was exclusively a T1-T4 soviet player - made it to ~1000 not the best but far from the worst. I found AT guns extremely underwhelming for the 360 mp price tag so I never really used them.

If you are going T1-T4 it is literally a race to get T4 and an SU85 at the same time as the P4. build a couple conscripts for early capping power, maybe a penal and make sure to build 1-2 guards to handle light vehicles. If you can get a 120 mm mortar safely do so - it is a squad wiping work horse when used correctly but it can be fairly difficult to feel the right time to purchase it. I never liked using snipers much because I felt they were too flimsy for my test. If you feel confident with them they are probably better than a penal battalion but both have adequate AI capabilities in my experience.

Once you have the fuel get T4 and your first SU85 out asap. Be very careful with it. Mark target and destroy the first german vehicles if the opportunity presents. I liked to maintain my infantry composition while acquiring an additional 1-2 SU85s. 3 SU85s pretty much gives armor dominance in 1v1 - ostheer will likely have to rely on AT guns which are effective against SU85's. You should be able to effectively hold your ground with the listed infantry - 2-3 SU85's and a 120 mm mortar. Keep your infantry in cover and let your range advantage do the work. The synergy with a T1-T4 strategy is all about the range advantage - which is why the really good players that can micro snipers well opt for those instead of penal battalions.

The thing with this unit is that you have to manage to know when you can filter the 120mm into your composition.

Exactly. Too soon and you risk heavy punishment from FHT and likely the first P4. Too late and it won't be on the field long enough for it to really shine and cause serious MP damage. The price increase messed with the timing window a bit for me.

I typically liked it best after my first guard squad and before my first SU85 would roll out.

That's not even true in games that have no RNG whatsoever, so if that's your objective, you are doomed to dissapointment

It's not like you play to the same skill level every single game... From my times playing chess I know there is approximately a 200 point discrepancy in my playing ability between morning and night. RNG should never be the deciding factor in a game. It should simply be how well each player is playing at the given time.
