I am a huge COH1 fan. And I still play it, a lot more than you apparently. (several times a week).

But don't concern yourself about COH1 when it comes to Relic. Just accept that they earn almost nothing from it and hence have no incentive to make it any better.

Play it or move on is the best I can offer.

If you are religious, pary that he guides Relic towards better COH2 design or a COH3 that is more akin to COH1. unfortunately crying or complaining won't help and will just frustrate you.

That seems... uncharitable.

The Allies in Normandy did come to the conclusion that if they fought the Germans on "anything like even numbers", they would lose. And so, as I understand it, the design intent was essentially that if the Axis can survive the Allied Zerg-rush, their individually superior units could or would turn the tide.

I was pointing out that the aesthetic itself was a choice, as is to believe in the myth of the aesthetic. Just don't think it was reality.

As to Normandy; one, normally you never expect an attacker to win on equal numbers. Obviously there are situations where the numerically inferior can win on the attack, but that is not the general case.

Normandy was even more unique in that so much preparation went into the landings and so little into the preparation for fighting in the Bocage once a foothold was achieved. No one spoke of "anything like even numbers" and for the most part they didn't think they were in any way inferior to the Germans. There were Germans they knew would be tougher opponents than others, but at no time did they think they couldn't get the job done or that they could only achieve it with overwhelming force. To WANT overwhelming force is a different matter. No soldier or general only brings the minimum they think they need to succeed. They bring everything they can afford to bring to ensure success (and a low casualty count).

I'm primarily an allies player. I don't play German often because I find their design to be cheap and boring. IN team games the trick is to really just drag it out, if the game lasts long enough you'll probably win.

If you look at this part of the COH2 design, and compare it to the original map designs of COH1 (Yes, Achelous, Lyon, Vire, Scheldt were ALL on the original list of automatch maps) you wold think that Relic designers really believed if only the Germans had held out long enough they would have won in the end.

But apparently their unit preservation and fortified lines weren't up to snuff.

There is a lot in history we think we know well that we do not for many and various reasons. Often one piece of work becomes a kind of canon (not cannon) because of popularity, rarity, supposed provenance of the author, etc.

The Belton Cooper book was for a long time the definitive source of so much of what people thought they knew regarding the M4 Sherman. McNair was the bad guy. The Panther was the best designed, best built and best all around tank of the war. Etc. etc. Today we know the stories are much more complex than that. We understand that though veterans accounts are invaluable they are also one persons limited and subjective opinion view. We have information that was either classified or hidden away in archives while the "everbody knows" type of history was being constructed.

That is why there is still work for historians to do. Is there a cottage industry of people working these things out? Sure. Just as there was a cottage industry of people who ground out the history "everybody knows" about the war in the couple of decades after.

I am old enough to have watched "The World at War" when it came out. Mostly though I watched it when my parents thought I was ready which wasn't for a handful of years after. It is a great piece of wark and was the "definitive documentary" film at that point and for many years later. Yet think about that. Pretty much everything "experts" (particularly armchair generals) thought they knew about the war excluded knowledge or understanding of what Ultra (breaking the Enigma code) did for the war effort.
