I used to main UKF but I've stayed clear of UKF in this patch so far, because I was enjoying the other armies more. But, I was determined to give them another shot, so I played a bunch of games the last couple of days. I pretty much lost every single one. Before this patch I was in the top 50 UKF players. I just lost to a rank 400 OST player (and it's not like I wasn't trying).

There is some discussion of the remaining good / bad points of UKF in the UKF strategy forum, so I won't go into unit-by-unit detail, but I'd love to get the opinion of players who main other armies so here's my two questions.

1. Am I retarded? Have I failed to adapt to changes in the latest patches? Or, is it now just standard for UKF players to lose to people 300 ranks below them?

2. If they're dead, can they be made alive again just by giving Sappers a snare (as is currently proposed)? Or are more extensive changes needed?
My personal opinion would be that we should just revert some of the multi-nerfs that have hit literally every unit on the UKF roster in the last few patches, but I know that due to having certain powerful units, they have been OP in team games in the past so some people may disagree...

Sorry for the necro, but any new ideas on this perplexing question?

I haven't played Brits much in this patch but resolved to give them another try. Result is I lost every single game I played (until automatch itself felt sorry for me and matched me against a rank 900 player).

How to 1v1?

The good
Bren carrier and AEC
Sniper against OKW (but 40/60 dice roll to immediately win/lose the game against Wehr)
Commandos are great if well-microed
Centaur still good, but only if you have 2 AT guns and somehow didn't lose them to indirect
Mid / late-game doctrinal artys are good

The bad
Mortar pit is a 350 MP suicide unit in 1v1, so no smoke or indirect 4u
Tommies are now Grens (but without mortar, flamer, mg42 support)
AT guns can't hit anything anymore
PIAT can't pen anymore
Sniper can't snare anymore
Firefly is most expensive and worst TD
Comet/Churchill pointless

The ugly
"Valentine" late-game AEC, Suxton extra useless base howitzer, Crocodile suicide tank, 8-man single use 420MP recovery engineers, 3-man infiltration suicide commandos, weapon unlock HT that doesn't unlock weapons...

Is there something I'm missing? Especially, how to counter anyone who builds a mortar or LeIG? Or more generally, any semi-competent Wehr defense, without waiting for Party Cover (by which time you're already trying to beat a Tiger I or II with a bunch of Cromwells and some mines)?

Way easier to get mgs and stall with bazooka REs for fast sherman than spend more fuel for stuart.

That's probably a good point. Although if it was really that easy I think a lot more people would be going LT at the moment anyway.

How do you feel about the other options for mixing the tiers? Combining all the possibilities that mix at least 1 AI and 1 AT per tier...

Maybe it's due to my low Wehr rank but I see this as the strongest Wehr commander in many cases. The stun grenades and G43s give a huge boost to Wehr early game. Panzer Tactician has long been just about the best mid-game ability there is, as it basically allows you to build a bunch of mediums and YOLO them around, pop smoke at 20% remaining HP, and have an 80% chance of escaping (unless your opponent gets lucky with attack ground). Then to top it all off, you can rely on Wehr's strong defensive play until 17 CP and call in the Ace to finish things off.

I don't know if I see a strong argument for redesigning or replacing the Tiger Ace, it's already an interesting mechanic, and it puts you in the position where calling it in and NOT winning in the next few minutes will basically lose you the game - which by that stage, will be 100% deserved.

Not to derail the topic too much, but in addition to the obvious MP cost decrease, as has been discussed in a few threads recently swapping around the tech might be a good solution.

It may have made sense in the past when USF early game was overpowered, but at the moment it makes absolutely no sense to have both AT options in the Captain tier (Stuart, AT gun) and both suppression options (MG, flak HT) in the Lieutenant tier. On top of that the Lieutenant tier has two anti-infantry light vehicles (M20 and flak HT). This is very WTF design.

So why not swap the Flak HT with the AT gun? Then the tiers make sense:

LT: MG for suppression, AT gun for AT, M20 for harassment
Cpt: Flak HT for suppression, Stuart for AT, Howitzer for harassment

This even makes sense from an immersion standpoint - LT has the basic tools, but if you can hold out for that little extra fuel for Captain, you get some higher shock-value units to play around with.

If it doesn't work now, it must either be a bug or something that was changed in a patch...

Not that I have a strong opinion on this or anything, but sometimes I wonder if removing the free units would actually be a bit of a ninja buff.

Sometimes I find that with the need to get 3~4 rifles in the early game, plus Rear Echelon, plus at least 2 "free squads", that buying elite inf (paras, rangers) becomes impossible. Assuming you didn't suicide your units, elite inf just adds unsustainable manpower bleed that's needed for buying other stuff - and since you're USF, your opponent has already gone an anti-infantry build anyway.

So, could be a L2P issue, but remove the free squads and it might actually give you the option to build the stuff that you actually want to.

Hence your claim that the USF is not even slightly playable is nothing but a wild exaggeration, none of this surprises me at all since as I mentioned earlier that the amount of exaggeration on this thread is quite shameless.

I'll admit that my post was hyperbolic.

On the other hand I think it's well-known from e.g. recent polls and GCS results that USF and UKF are very weak at the moment.

I do support certain OKW buffs such as to the KT, but if we want to re-balance things overall we have to undo at least some of the past nerfs to USF and UKF. (BTW I don't think you can claim that this patch is "allied biased" then ask us to prove it to you; rather for such a strong claim against the current consensus, the burden of proof lies on yourself.)

Anyway back on topic, we know that building REs is effectively early-game suicide at the moment due to the large amounts of infantry pressure in the current meta, so I would lean towards the edits to volley fire over free smoke (since smoke would be great against OST but not do anything much against OKW, which IMHO is the harder matchup...)

Is there some technical reason we can't just make RE volley fire a timed ability, independent of equipped weapons? Like, suppresses a squad after 3 seconds if the RE squad is still alive and firing?

If not that, then 5 man RE or free smoke or whatever. Or remove the dumb-ass StG upgrade for Volks. Really anything that could make USF even slightly playable again, please.

Agree totally with OP and a lot of what's being said here. USF could have some minor buffs such as M20 manpower price decrease, but the bigger problem is Volksspam being OP on a faction that was originally designed as a late-game faction. I find OKW really boring to play now since spamming Volks can pretty much carry the early, mid, and even late game.

Something has to change - even something small like putting flame nades behind tech or taking away sandbags. Volks will always have a big role (snaring, capping, supporting, damage sponge for other inf.) but being able to win any 1v1 engagement with Rifles from behind cover (sandbags) and also when attacking cover or buildings (flame nade) is just stupid.

My suggestion since long ago was to remove the weird all-ranges StG upgrade. Volks don't need to be anti-infantry infantry when OKW already has Obers + Falls, PFusils, or Jagers. Even if you replace Volks' StG with something as powerful but more situational like MP40s, and flame nade unlock, at least it forces a choice for each quad having either long or short range firepower and therefore either good defence or good attack, rather than being able to win or cause disproportionate MP bleed in 90% of situations.
