Cool story, again, how is this related to your thread's supposed point?
Dude said coh2 tournys have been great so I pointed out all of the flaws and problems associated with the previous tournies. People like to dismiss criticism as "haters gonna hate" but it is an objective fact that coh2 sucks. Try to find another dev studio with Relic's track record. I don't know any other game where every patch breaks the game, especially during the biggest tourny in coh2 history. I don't know a dev studio that puts thousands of dollars into their esports scene just so they can pull the plug & fire the whole dev team. Majority of the coh2 pros have only been in the coh2 scene or at least been in it for a long time so they are acclimated to this level of mediocrity. There is a systemic apathy in the community when people expect Relic to fuck up.
As to the broader point, Relic could experiment with their RNG system if balance were more on point. When simple balance is hard for you, you can't experiment with your fundamental systems. When we eventually get balance updates (since Relic shifted that responsibility on to the community), the underline problems will still persist & weaken the integrity of the game. Treating symptoms while leaving the underline condition untreated will kill the patient.
We had tons of tourneys for both titles, all them were amazing (yes, we had RNG all the way). I guess it can't be a coincidence.
God I hope this game will never be an e-sport title. It's made for fun for the common folks.

Ya the last tourny, warpaint, was such a huge success since it could barely break 1k viewers. The in-person final was useless since it didn't utilize anything: no facecams during game, shitty audio quality, and the pregame stream wasn't even full screen. Also the finals had less viewers than the opening round. Due to great success of warpaint, we saw relic delay the Q4 2016 winter update to spring 2017. There still isn't any new content being created by Relic. Most of the major players & streamers left. Warpaint champ DevM doesn't even play this game, only coming back for the $$$.
How about the success of ESL? Lead Dev Brad made the AEC OP, OP mattress, OP brit arty call-in, Veterency broke, Broken maxim + AT partysans dominated March ESL. After ESL Brad & the dev team got fired so the balance responsibilities have shifted to community members and somehow these patches take forever and break the game - combine arms bug, USF mortar vet glitch, USF mortar being OP, USF mortar still being OP after nerf.
HUGE SUCCESS!!! COH2 IS THE BIGGEST GAME AND BIGGEST ESPORT IN THE WORLD. THESE ARNT JUST ALTERNATIVE FACTS, THEY ARE REAL FAKES. DON'T BELIEVE THE FAKE NEWS OF COH2 BEING A SHITTY GAME & ESPORT. COH2 IS BEST. RELIC WILL MAKE COH2 GREAT AGAIN. IF YOU DISAGREE, YOURE A LIBERAL CUCK. IM NOT A FOOTMAN, YOU A FOOTMAN.
To end on a serious note, I speak to a lot of major people in the esports industry and most don't know what CoH2 is. Most people don't know what CoH2 is. The few devs, who know CoH2, only know about it because of the success of CoH1, which came out in 2006 before modern esports was created. I see CoH2 & Relic for what it is and wasn't shy about what the problems are. Unlike a lot of haters, I've put time & energy trying to make the game better but ultimately I can only show Relic the path, they have to walk down the path. For whatever reason, either cutting their losses or they think they know best, they don't really care about improving CoH2 tbh.
More StarCraft and less what made CoH... basically CoH, right?
I mean why not just go and play StarCraft, it's obvious this game will NEVER be competitive.
And I see no point in Relic trying to abide to StarCraft's fanbase made up of competitive high APM mlg "pros" that go around trying to ruin other games when they get bored of SC2.
And now thanks to those same people Relic are making Dawn of War III into StarCraft with a Warhammer 40,000 skin on top, great.
Way to go assholes, first MOBAs and now turning good tactical games into StarCraft, just brilliant.
Note: No this is not directed towards Shadowada I have nothing against him, I'm just talking about it in general, I'm just noting my observations.
I'd say they are making DoW3 closer to LoTV since SC2's problem was lack of micro since it boiled down to who could execute macro timings the best. With Legacy of the void, they added a bunch of micro based units to inject variety based on player skill into the game. I think it is a good thing to have this influence DoW3 since it is a good way to get variety into a game rather than "herpa derpa lets add random RNG to make it funz" as well as add a higher skill cap by having a focus be on micro rather than just macro.
One of CoH2's major problems is the sheer amount of variables in the system. If balance was on point, Relic would be able to experiment with all these variables but they can barely juggle one thing at a time so there is no way they can juggle all the balls in the air. By streamlining cover, damage, abilities, asymmetrical design, it should make the DoW3 better.
This is the focal point of the whole discussion. I'll refer to here and say that RNG has a place in (a -yes- competitive CoH).
The problem with GG's comparisons is it is comparing the inconsistent and random CoH2 RNG to more consistent RNG in games like Hearthstone and LoL. Back in LoL Season 2, they refined their crit algorithm so if you have 2% crit chance, you will reliably crit 2 out of every 100 auto attacks. CoH2 doesn't have this level of consistency since you can have tanks miss multiple times in a row while having tanks hit multiple times in a row. Sometimes models drop while other times they don't. It is random and outside of player control & influence. Also people focus on tank combat as the main RNG in CoH2 while RNG is a systemic problem influencing basic inf combat.
Something people are missing is I'm not against RNG but am against bad RNG. At the end of the day, the deciding factor in a game needs to be playerskill so RNG needs to be something the player can influence and play around. With model drops and tank combat, the player can't influence these at all. In a card game, I can calculate the probabilities and play around them. I might lose to something that only happens 2% of the time but at least I know. Take for example in coh2, snipers vs buildings. There is a 50% chance of hitting so 1 out of every 2 shots should hit but I've had times where a sniper is able to hit 5+ times in a row while other times it missed 5+ times in a row. As a player, I can't influence that at all.
Also I didn't mentioned this in the original post since it is big enough topic on its own: Relic can't "experiment" with their version of RNG since basic balance changes takes months to get out and tons of bugs are still in the game. If the game were more polished, it would give relic more room to experiment with RNG but having a wonky RNG system on top of shitty & nonexistent balancing, is a bad combination (and I would argue that even with good balance, it would be undermined by the shitty RNG system).
One of CoH2’s fundamental problems is the lack of consistency in the RNG. For a game to be competitive, the main determiner of a match needs to be player skill. Take a card game like Hearthstone or poker, a skilled player can calculate the probabilities of drawing a card so while luck/RNG plays a huge role, the player can play around it since it is consistent; there can’t be a game of poker or blackjack where there is more than 52 cards or there is 5 kings in the deck.
Unlike this consistent RNG, CoH2’s rng is random. The obvious example is tank combat where a tank or AT shot misses multiple times in a row or hits multiple times in a row (Honorable mention is tank phasing since sometimes tanks block each other while other times tanks go through one another. Why this glitch is still in the game is beyond me). While tank combat is the easiest to see the influence of RNG, it is pervasive throughout the whole system. Basic infantry combat has many variables influencing if a target deals damage: unit mobility, target distance, weapon ammo, cover. Even if the target deals damage, the model drop is completely random (as many of you know from watching my stream, I hate the random model drop.). Sometimes a 50% hp squad will have full models. Sometimes a 30% hp squad will have full models. I've even seen less than 5% hp squads have full models. There is absolutely nothing the player can do to influence whether a model drops.
While majority of the systemic RNG problems would need a rework to fix, there is simple RNG problems that are still in the game such as vehicle abandons, weapon drops, and mine crits. It is incredible stupid to have these RNG elements in the game as they degrade CoH2’s competitive integrity. I joke I’ll give someone thousands of dollars if they can give me a legit balance reason why completely random vehicle abandons, weapon drops, and crits should be in the game and I’ve yet to hear a good answer.
Now in a defense of Relic’s decision, it is difficult to balance the competitive aspects in conjunction with the fun aspects. In a purely balanced system, it wouldn’t be as fun due to lack of variety. However, Relic took the easy fix to add variety by adding purely random elements into coh2.
The way to fix the RNG problem:
1. Remove the stupid RNG – abandons and weapon drops
2. Fix the model drop by making it more consistent - complex issue since indirect fire complicates the issue since if tied directly to hp %, one mortar could kill most models while in current system, you have the chance to heal the damage. To fix model drop, you have to make indirect fire more consistent.
3. Fix the algorithm for tank combat so penetrations, hits, and misses are more consistent. (might want to consider simplifying penetration where if the penetration is above the armor value, it does damage while if it is under, it doesn’t do damage so the RNG is tied to hit/miss chance.)
As long as CoH2’s fundamental problems remained unfixed, any balance changes won’t have a major effect; Renovating your house’s rooms won’t matter if the foundation is shit. If the fundamentals aren’t fixed, it will continue to stunt and shrink our competitive scene until there is nothing left.
I have to say that I take the opinions of people who have ditched the community with a pinch of salt. You guys have your own reasons for leaving and that's cool, but you don't need to try and take everyone with you. CoH2 legends come and go, you don't need to crush the community on your way out.
We all know Relic messes up. blah blah. Nothing new there for years.
Fact is the situation we have right now, is that a community balance team are trying to do some good work in the game and we need to focus on that as the only option we have. This doesn't need to turn into a 'Reasons why the old CoH2 crowd doesn't play anymore' thread
Guys guys guys. Don´t let yourself to get confused by wadas words. Because there were big mistakes in past, it shouldn´t discourage us to create better future of coh2.
If we manage to create balance game, I think, playerbase won´t go down so drasticly
I don't doubt that the community can make a balance game but because we are at this point, I do doubt relic will release new content or try to make esports a reality
I have to agree with this unfortunately. And looks like ShadowWadaaa's pessimism
and concerns weren't that unfounded after all. But at least the ones who are disappointed with this diminishing support can move on with closure and a definite conclusion.
It aint pessimism when it is FACT. The Frontline Network left. Sundaynight fights left. Romeo left. Momo left. I left. Everyone left cuz they got tired of relic's incompetence. March ESL patch broke the AEC and it took them a month to fix that and the broken brit arty callin because Brad took a week off for the sniffles but was well enough to 1v1 Queen Ratchet on momo's stream. Veterency was broken during ESL. The hotfix broke the game. March ESL had broken maxim spam that got patch a month after ESL. Brad & the dev team got fired after ESL. USF mortar had a vet bug which took the weekend to fix and a month to nerf the mortar and it was still OP.
Warpaint was a flop: Naggono was disqualified for no reason since they did nothing with the in person final. The pregame stream wasn't even full screen webcam. The audio was shitty. No face cams of players during the game. More people watched the opening rounds than the finals tbh (Maybe cuz the great shadowwada was in the opening). After warpaint, none of the players actually play or stream the game since they just come back for the money. No follow up tournaments by Relic or community members since there isn't anyone left in the community & warpaint was just a commercial to sell skins
August roadmap finally gets released near end of october to tell us the december patch is coming out in February #QuarterlyUpdates. Though a december $kin patch gets released that somehow breaks the game's art assets. In regards to the real patch, that community members are doing since relic can't be bothered to hire devs to fix their own game, it bring decent quality of life changes such as buffing weh inf early game & nerfing T-70 since it took relic a year to figure that out but doesn't touch the main fundamental problems such as OKW, Brits, USF sucking and dumb RNG like weapon drops & vehicle abandons. Also the game has a shit ton of glitches that need to be fixed.
In closing, I see the game for the clown fiesta it is so don't say I'm pessimistic when you're overly optimistic when there is ZERO evidence to back it up. By every metric CoH2 is a dead game so if you want a balanced game, wait for the community to get relic's job done for them. If you want new content, wait for DoW3. If you want a real game, play anything other than coh2 tbh (or herp derp 4v4s if thats your thing). I went above and beyond the call of duty to try to make coh2 esports a reality but relic's actions shows they don't care about it and/or are incompetent to implement it so I've moved on. My actions over this past year showed my commitment to the community so don't say I wasn't optimistic.
They are being taken into consideration since they are doing the heavy lifting for relic so relic gets a patch made by the community for free. If you're going to be salty at someone, be salty at relic for not hiring real devs & putting a real effort into their game tbh
The resources, time and ideas required to improve coh2 could be spend on creating a polished sequel instead. Sometimes it's best to start from scratch and save yourself lots of headaches.
But, some of the current issues and dilemmas can be solved without huge amount of work and investment.
They are making a sequel, its called DoW3. I'm a fair man but I doubt it will be the 2nd coming of #esports and will following a similar path to coh2.
