COMPANY OF HEROES WILL BE STORMING IPAD LIKE ITS NORMANDY LATER THIS YEAR
BY JOE ROBINSON 15 AUG 2019 0

Company of Heroes will live on forever as the most iconic tactical RTS in the history of strategy games. Not only is it one of the best WW2 strategy games, it’s one of the best games period. Probably.

Smartly evolving the rather old-school base-building idea into one that perfectly fits with realities of the Normandy campaign, it also brought with it a very versatile tactical interface where the lives of your units mattered, and exploiting the terrain was key to victory.

It’s a series that has few rivals, and now it’s coming to iPad thanks to those mad folks over at Feral Interactive. Queue trailer:

These are the guys that’s brought over games like Tropico and Rome: Total War (along with both its expansions), so they should know a thing or two about porting over well-loved strategy franchises. Here’s what we know for certain:

It’s coming ‘This Fall’.

It will be a premium game with no IAPs.

It will be iPad only to start with.

This is par-the-course with how Feral have ported things in the past: iPad first, then iPhone and then if we’re lucky, an Android port will follow at some-point as well. The IAP thing is fine, but remember Company of Heroes did have two expansions, one of which added the British Army (which was always my favourite) so it’ll be interesting to see whether those are also in the works, and whether they’ll be released as stand-alones a la RTW’s Barbarian Invasionand Alexander add-ons.

Sega Europe Executives talk about current industry trends & CoH + Total War ftp expanding to Asia | 21st June 2019:
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2019-06-21-sega-sees-streamings-potential-to-reach-new-audiences
"We're seeing growth coming from new markets or markets that are starting to open in a different kind of way, particularly in Asia and particularly China. Then within our existing portfolio, we're constantly looking to find ways to broaden the appeal of our existing franchises, whether that's Total War, Football Manager, or Company of Heroes. Whatever it is, we have a constant mission to extend the reach of those. And on top of that, we look at new IP opportunities as well to further increase our offering."

Interesting? I'm not sure how well it'll play without hotkeys, though... and no mouse. If there's online it might be interesting since reaction times will likely be way down.

It looks like it's out-sourced to "Feral Interactive", so I doubt they've spent much time on it.

I think Halo Wars is the prime example that an RTS without mouse, hotkeys and keyboard does not need to suck. Tho dunno how much you can compare a gamepad with a mobile phone :foreveralone:

And if anyone is curious as why, it's pretty simple.

Numbers. Millions of people. A whole different culture regarding gaming. They are the real whales in the game industry.

I've seen a vid recently about the most popular games and probably most of you never heard of them at all.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2019-01-16-fortnite-tops-2018-superdata-chart-with-usd2-4b-digital-revenue

MMOs. Mobile, Gacha (lootbox) games. Chinese Counter strike. They literally make billions for way less effort required to produce.

There is but a slight problem with it - they want to sell a game for extremely patient and persistent people to a customer base that has attention span of a kitten and requires constant participation rewards and gloryfication to stay engaged.

That means they have to go full C&C rivals or face certain fail.

Not talking necessarily about this Ipad version rather than the quote saying that they want to have more influence in the Asian market.
In similar fashion as to what happened to C&C, the game is developed by other studios and the only resemblance to the original IP would be the name.

Hey elchino7, thx for well thought out feedback as usual :)

I just want to add that Relic with AoE4 + CoH mobile seems to move away from ftp microtransactions for the western market. Not sure what they will do in Asia/China.
AoE Creative Director Adam Isgreen:
No planned micro-transactions in future AoE games
https://twitter.com/Ishmae1/status/1139240694847926272
@Ishmae1, 13. jun. 2019
I keep seeing drive-by comments around the net regarding the possibility of micro-transactions in future / upcoming #AgeOfEmpires games.

Let's be clear: that is not the plan.

IMO, Relic/Sega games will expand with new subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass/project xCloud streaming (console/pc/mobile), Apple Arcade (mobile) and/or Google Stadia streaming.

Microsoft’s new Xbox streaming mode is arriving in October for consoles, Jun 9, 2019:
https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/9/18656694/microsoft-project-xcloud-game-streaming-price-e3-2019

Sega Europe Football Manager is confirmed for Google Stadia launch.

Football Manager 2020 could be a massive Google Stadia stealth success:
https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/gaming/1137308/Football-Manager-2020-Google-Stadia
“We're delighted that Football Manager 2020 is going to be a Google Stadia launch title,” a message from Sports Interactive reads.

“We're not ready to reveal further details on the Stadia or Steam release but keep an eye on http://footballmanager.com and FM socials for updates in Aug and Sept.”

My educated guess Relic/Sega announce subscription-service plans for CoH at Xo19 london
https://www.xbox.com/x019

With confirmed AoE4 news at x019 Relic might announce new CoH plans/trailers along with it.
I'm biased against Google Stadia so I hope Xbox project xCloud streaming will win against Google.

CoH mobile TBA project xCloud?

Project xCloud Is The Way for Xbox to Reach Gamers in Africa and India, Says Phil Spencer:
https://wccftech.com/project-xcloud-way-xbox-reach-gamers-africa-india/
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2019-06-11-i-would-be-nice-to-buy-a-japanese-studio-phil-spencer
Speaking to GamesIndustry after the E3 2019 briefing, Head of Gaming Phil Spencer pointed to untapped territories like Africa and India as areas where consoles don’t currently do well, unlike smartphones. Thus, Project xCloud could be the perfect way to get these gamers to play Xbox titles.

We know that the first customers for xCloud are going to be people who own an Xbox. It’s going to be, ‘Oh, I want to play my Xbox when I’m away.’ Last month, Catherine [Gluckstein, chief of staff/strategy for Xbox] and I were in Africa. Not a lot of Xboxes in Africa. Not a lot of game consoles. 1.2 billion people on the continent of Africa. Average age is 19 on the continent. They know Fortnite, they know Halo, they know Gears of War. They just don’t have a device.

There are gamers there, but the device they have is an Android phone. So today they are kind-of locked out of what an E3 is — outside of watching — because of the capability they have.

When I think about the two billion [gamers worldwide], which is a number that has tripled over the last two decades, I really think about how we service the two billion who play today with as much content and services as we can offer, but also go to places like Africa. I was looking at some of the PUBG mobile numbers in India and they’re crazy — they’ve had 100 million downloads or something. You see these markets where gaming can grow to the next two billion or even more…. There are seven billion people on the planet. For me, I think they should all play video games.
