I say just copy what CoH1 did. Give the squad leader a rifle with the model of a smg. Adding another man onto the squad is enough already, giving said man a better weapon than the rest of the squad is just too much imao.

The reason the VSL gets a better weapon is to make the upgrade more attractive, compared to g43 and mg42. Just a fifth man is too underwhelming for grenadiers, even with the slight RA and CD buff.

Weapon stats can be adjusted to make anything useful.

Additionally, one Thompson per USF Captain and Lieutenant isn’t useless just because it’s the only SMG in the squad. A single MP40 would give the Grenadier squad firepower up close to repel an enemy assault as long as the 4 K98s in the squad can reduce the attackers as they close.

So no, for many reasons an MP40 wouldn’t be useless, it just wouldn’t be a powerhouse assault unit.

And since weapon stats are easily modified, for this implementation an MP40 or StG44 could have the EXACT SAME stats. So the choice between them is mostly a question of which you prefer aesthetically or historically.

Maybe not historically accurate, but a toned down FG-42 might be cool.

Awwwww, c’mon!

Ok, FG-42s are cool, but they’re rarer than unicorns even in the Fallschirmjager units they were deployed in.

Seriously, they only made about 7,000 of them. In realistic terms of equipment of units, that’s basically zero.

Which is why I liked the CoH 1 version of Fallschirmjager where they spawned with one StG44 and 3 K98s and then could be upgraded to have 4 FG-42s.

Dear Relic, please pay attention to production figures and tables of organization and equipment when you make CoH3. The games are great and fun, but a realistic representation of history is important else you risk being as bad as the “distorian” version of WWII that is CoD:WWII multiplayer and Battlefield V.

You can do it. Be better.

rifleman is mid-short range combat unit and grenadier is long range combat unit

thompson in rifle squad and mp40 in grenadier squad is different

1 mp40 cant be effective in close range

You’re missing the point in that a single SMG combined with the extra man, extra veterancy speed and extra received accuracy buff helped the squad at all ranges and especially at close range DEFENSIVE fights.

The goal is to make the upgrade more diverse from the already established G43 and LMG42 upgrades so you can choose from long range stationary firepower, mid range moving firepower or survivability buffs that help at all ranges.

The VSL could be armed with string cheese and it would still help the squad at all ranges with just the received accuracy and extra model of health.

It depends on if the weapon transfer or not. If the weapon transfers it will be good at CQC but might be bad in long range since the entity will simply be a target fro practice.

Many are currently enjoying and embracing the new WM Grenadier upgrade that adds a 5th man to the squad. Currently this Veteran Squad Leader (VSL) is armed with a scoped G43 semi automatic rifle. The official Table of Organization and Equipment (TO&E) for a German rifle squad calls for ten soldiers armed with mostly K98ks, one MG34 or MG42 on a bipod in the LMG role and one MP40 carried by the squad leader. Later this MP40 would be substituted or replaced by an StG44 as more became available, but it varied from unit to unit. G43s were only issued in small numbers to designated marksmen at the company level.

History aside, the WM Grenadier squad can get three possible upgrades.

1. Non-doctrinal LMG42 upgrade. This represents the 1 MG42 on a bipod real squads would have.

2. Doctrinal G43 upgrade. Gives two G43 sniper rifles to the squad. Much less realistic, but gameplay > realism.

3. VSL upgrade that adds one extra soldier to the squad who has a G43 and some special attributes and buffs the squad.

2/3 of these involve the quite rare G43 rifle, which seems a little redundant considering the number of other possibilities.

So I ask you; what weapon would you like to see the veteran squad leader carry? Are you happy with a G43 or would you prefer something else?

Vote and discuss below!

But keep it clean and play nice.

They built the same number of g43s as they did stg44s

This is true.

My point is that there is already an upgrade that gets two G43s.

While StG44s were as rare as G43s in total production numbers, they are under represented in the WM in game being only used by Panzergrenadiers, which are themselves not used that often.

It should also be noted that G43s were issued differently than StG44s. G43s were typically issued as designated marksman rifles at the company level while StG44s were issued as a replacement for Kar98ks in some units and to replace MP40s in others.
