New PC, 14 FPS Average

Today I have set up a new PC.

Here are the Specs:

GTX 1060 3gb
Intel I5 7400 4 cores @ 3.0/3.5Ghz
8GB RAM

Although I realise these specs are modest, I did not expect an average of 14FPS from the performance test. I ran it with auto-detected low/minimal settings in 1920x1080p. This is significantly worse than my old 2010 rig with: HD5850 1 GB, AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.40 Ghz, and 4GB RAM.

I am unsure why I am getting such abysmal performance. Could the game be using the Intel intergrated HD Graphics instead of the GTX 1060 ? Is it a Direct X issue ? I have already downloaded the latest drivers from the GeForce experience suite.

I bought this PC to mainly run my favourite game, COH2. I would be very grateful for any advice on this matter.

Thank you

8gbs is not enough for the game if you try to use high settings and it may be the couse. Antialiasing is also a huge hit to performance. Set it to low or none to get better results. If feel you still want the quality that antialiasing provides, rather turn it on in your graphic card settings than in game as the options provided in game are suboptimal performance wise.

EDIT: I did not read that you were using low settings. If that is the case then there must be something wrong with your hardware. Check the temperatures and stress your new rigs with some actual benchmarks to see if it still gets worse results than your old PC. If it does then its either some other process taking all the power or some hardware issue like: overheating, power source problems (power supply or bad connections) or simply faulty components.

As for the build in graphix, yes it is possible but only if you are using the build in one in the desktop. I guess its is the first place where you should check. It happens that if your GPU breaks the build in replaces it even transfering the image using ports on the broken GPU board.

I was getting poor FPS due to heat related issues. Heatsink and thermal paste were inadequate.

I've run the game on a 650ti / 3570k / 8gb. Had to restart every couple of games to be safe but it was perfectly playable.

You can run 'dxdiag' and click on the display tab to see what device is being used as far as the integrated or Nvidia card.

The benchmark tool in COH2 is old and broken. Ignore it.

Turn on the fps display in Steam and play a 1v1 match for your actual fps. You should start with well over 60fps. If it's still bad, let us know.

Steam -> Settings -> In-Game-> In-game FPS counter

Or you can use FRAPS for averages and stuff. It will go down as the match progresses though. No hardware can overcome the poorly coded engine.

It might also be worth checking the obvious - are you sure you didn't plug your monitor into the motherboard by accident? I've done it before and for the longest time wondered why I wasn't getting max graphics.

I have detailed in another post, but I play on a 32" TV and the video card detected it as a TV and defaulted COH2 to a refresh rate of 24 HZ. It was unplayable. So 14 FPS sounds about right for a benchmark for that situation.

I have a 1060 3GB in an i7 3770 w/8 GB Ram and measure @ 60HZ:
Vsync on: avg 53 Peak 60
Vsync off: avg 63 Peak 94

Everything set to high or highest except AA set to Low.

Well this is going to sound stupid.

Make sure the cable that is plugged into your monitor is in your GPU. If it is plugged into your motherboard you will be using the integrated graphics.

If not try and get the latest drivers and see what that does.

Just ran a DXDIAG. Intel HD Graphics 630 is the first thing detected as a display device. The 1060 is listed below it.

When I switched to big picture mode in the steam client it listed Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 as the display device, when I upped the resolution for big picture mode it warned me against it saying I only had 128MB VRAM !

How can I be sure that the game at least is using the 1060 rather than the Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 ?

From Steam:

Video Card:
Driver: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
DirectX Driver Name: igdumdim32.dll

Have you got your monitor actually plugged into the 1060, or is it plugged into onboard (the ports near all the usb etc?)

I humbly apologize for my obscene ignorance . It was plugged into the motherboard rather than the GPU. Just got an average of 50FPS on mostly high settings.

Happens to the best of us. :)

Glad it was an easy fix.

Dxdiag is a fun little thing. You can get a quick glimpse of computer guts if you're ever on one.

Don't worry about it, most people have done the same thing before.

This wins the internet!

Edit: But I thought NO means Yes. And YES means do it harder?
