Relic RTS games tend to have complex terrain with lots of medium and strong cover zones. The system has been simplified in Dawn of War 3 to allow for clearer counter-play. Cover in the demo I saw consisted of circular barricade structures that units can capture. Units in cover are resistant to ranged fire, but can be quickly eliminated by close-combat squads.

That sounds awful....

At the rate they keep dumbing their shit down COH3 will be mobile game

From the steam store page

About This Game
Step into a brutal battle between three warring factions

In Dawn of War® III you will have no choice but to face your foes when a catastrophic weapon is found on the mysterious world of Acheron.

With war raging and the planet under siege by the armies of greedy Ork warlord Gorgutz, ambitious Eldar seer Macha, and mighty Space Marine commander Gabriel Angelos, supremacy must ultimately be suspended for survival.

UNLEASH THE GIANTS
Take control of towering war machines and tip the balance of battle in your favor with the biggest characters in Dawn of War history. Turn the tide with the mighty Imperial Knight (Space Marine), the clattering Gorkanaut (Ork), or the haunting Wraithknight (Eldar).

COLOSSAL BATTLES
Dawn of War is famous for its epic action and those immense clashes are back - but now they're off-the-scale. Wage war with massive armies across violent volcanic terrain or onboard battlecruisers travelling fast through space.

CALL UP YOUR ELITE
Take your battle plans to another level by deploying powerful collectible elite squads, each boasting their own special abilities and bonuses that will help you unlock and develop new attacking strategies to conquer your foes.

DESTRUCTIVE ABILITIES
Cause devastation on the battlefield with powerful super-abilities. Rain down total destruction on your enemies with the Space Marine's Orbital Bombardment, the Eldar's blistering Eldritch Storm or the Ork’s Rokks to counter your unsuspecting rivals.

THREE-FACTION CAMPAIGN
Learn what makes each force formidable through alternating missions. You'll soon come to understand the combat advantages of Space Marines, Orks, and Eldar and the rules of a universe with no heroes or villains… only war.

ONE ARMY TO RULE
Build your own universal army from the very first moment you are matched in a melee. Progress through battle after battle with loyal troops by your side across both challenging campaign missions and dominating multiplayer maps.

A NEW DAWN ONLINE
Your army will wreak havoc in online co-operative mode. Join the multiplayer community and forge new alliances - then turn the tables on your new 'friends' as they become foes in explosive, chaotic and competitive maps.

Hm... i don´t get it, no real cover. Probably you buy your "titan" (aka commander). Lets see the perfomance of the game - i am worried. The moment i read you can´t build your base and turrets i am out.
i was hyped this morning, now i won´t preorder. Sorry to say but, i am not hyped at all anymore.

I don't think having cover is what makes Relic games tricky to learn, it's what makes them fun to play and unique from other rts games.

Maybe with bigger scale and base building back Dow 3 will trade micro depth for macro depth

As I wrote on the official forums I believe the lack of "dynamic cover system" as well as the very different graphics quality from the screens PC Gamer posted hint they are using a different engine. (as some rumors hinted before me, I think it's Unity)

Various points to back up this idea of a new engine: bigger scale fights, less details on each model, fixed cover system, more focus on bigger units and "elitè" units. Unity would be perfect for this and it would provide a much more optimized engine to manage big battles.

I think the game will be closer to the DOW1 design but also closer to the Supreme Commander scale rather than the COH scale: if this happens to be the truth we could expect a pretty different game compared to what we are used to see from Relic; my guess, with the few information we have, is that DOW3 will be a sort of hybrid RTS/MOBA with a focus on team games and macromanagement (where micro would be mainly accomplished from units positioning and Elitè units unique abilities).

It could represent a smart move in some way since it would mean having an easier to play and on bigger scale Relic game that would be designed to be more appealing and easy to approach for a wider amount of people (kinda like Arena is in the Total War franchise). On the other side it's a risk, they might be further "dumbing down" the game mechanics and a lot of fans might not like it.

Personally I am looking forward to see a game with a different approach compared to Company of Heroes so I am totally interested in the new project. Graphics might not be as good as previous games but if the scale is actually bigger (and also zoomed out more) it wouldn't really matter.

Let's wait and see more info about it :)

PS: Obviously for a COH3 I would want to see a better version of COH1, more punishing and more rewarding for good micro play. Having two different paths for their franchises to cater two different audiences might actually be a good long term plan!

The models look worse than DoW I, yet come 12 years after... Something isn't right.

I hope they're placeholder for improved visuals and this SC BS gets cut out.

Plz no MOBA crap thank you. Relic should stick with what they know. And the game better runs ok, COH2 engine is shit.

I'm hyped. I was worried that Relic was going to leave out Eldar but then I realised that you can't really have a good Warhammer 40k game without the Eldar :romeoMug:

A CG trailer and some shopped screenshots. It's the CoH2 initial announcement all over again.

I wonder how long this gif will be relevant for.
