How about if pathing algorithms are changed to strongly disfavor deep snow. That way a player can make a conscious choice to take a shortcut through deep snow, but it will no longer be an issue for retreat pathing and just general fuckery?

I say we keep the Snow. It keeps the game from getting boring. If the Blizzards are taken away, it'll never come back once cleared.

I always hated deep snow. It restricts movement and flanking. It makes your troops die on retreat. It makes aggressive play much more risky. There always too much of it.
Remove it, all other winter mechanics is fine.

The retreat path it's not your decision anymore. So as someone said already, when it comes to retreating squads, let's make it like in fences case: retreating squad should automaticaly go around that deep snow area.

Keep it. It's just like negative cover so you have to avoid it. The problem is that in some maps, the only way to flank a position is through deep snow. If they fix this, it's fine.

god I hate deep snow. If it was going i'd be able to veto maps I don't like rather then everything that ends with "winter"

Just make it so infantry destroy it when they walk over it, so worst case scenario you just need one squad to do the shovelling work and the rest of the game you no longer suffer it.
I mean don't vehicles do this already?
You can even make it so blizzards will "reset" the deep snow tiles, so that mechanic can have an equilibrium/ reset function in relevant winter maps. There, problem solved, presto: deep snow is still there, but not always there.

It doesn't help that at low graphics settings it is extremely hard to tell difference between deep snow and regular snow. Makes for some hair pulling moments.

Remove or severely nerf the penalties regarding movement.
