current player count by steam :

Using current player count on steam charts as the actual playerbase, fail.

5000 peak concurrent players in a day doesn't mean that 5000 players logged in and played that day. It's going to be a lot more than 5000 and 12,000 unique log ins for one day is not a bad estimate. Only people who know the real numbers are Valve, Relic and Sega.

The game is slowly getting better (not at a rate that I'd personally like however) and the player base is growing so by virtue there will be more competitive players.

With Brits coming, the game will rise again.
This has always been the case.
New DLC or free weekends result in many players.

It's really not that complicated...

If the AVERAGE number of players concurrently online the past month is ~4,200, then the community as a whole is clearly way larger than 4-5000 people (as you claim).

In fact the peak number of players over the past month is about double what you claim the entire community is...

wuFF's guess towards the size of the active community is probably pretty accurate.

The numbers aren't impressive if compared to the mega titles like LoL, DoTA, HS, CS:GO but as others have pointed out - the golden age of the RTS is over (unfortunately). Even SC2 is struggling to keep pace with MOBAs today, which attract a similar player-base as RTS. Personally, (as a former DoTA 1 semi-pro back in the day) I don't understand all the MOBA hype, but clearly people love watching/playing them (and who am I to judge what other people enjoy) - and they're obviously pushing the limits with competitive gaming which is really cool to see in action.

There are so many factors as to why the "old guard" doesn't player CoH 2 that is it naive to make claims along the lines of "COH 2 obviously sux b/c vcoh players don't like it." There are countless other competitive titles to spend your time on if your only goal is to become a pro gamer. The guys that played vCoH at the top levels are all like 10 years older now. A lot of them simply don't enjoy the way COH 2 is played (doesn't mean either is better/worse, they're just different). Some of them can't handle being terribad at CoH 2 so they make up excuses for not liking the game...

Still, no one has been able to answer the question... if all these people are constantly talking about how good vCoH is/was, and they all say they want to play it then why is no one playing it? Just makes no sense to come on the forums and cry about a game that you don't even play, rather than play the game you are constantly trying to tell everyone is better than the game they're playing... Yeah. That logic tho... >_<

Do you think the same 5000 people are online 24/7? No, of course not.

We see a common trend, Most Sunday's the game spikes.

This is CET, as we can see there are 7,912 players online.

In this second screenshot we can see that it is 06:00 CET, and there are 3099 players online, how likely is it that they're EU players? very unlikely. It would be 12:00AM on the east cost of the US/CANADA, go figure.

In this third image we see 5,272 players online at 13:00 CET 07:00 (EST) time. Most EU players are at work or school and most east coast players are sleeping, this leaves the middle and far east where it would roughly be 10-12AM.

Do you now understand how the current (1 hour) playerbase shown on the charts do not reflect a games actual playerbase?

If you look at the trend for week days you see 5000 active at EU times and 2000/3000 on US times.

If all of you guys love vCoH so much, and all of you want to play it... why not play it... literally no one is stopping you.

When SSBB came out and part of the smash community liked it, the other part hated it - what did people do? *gasp* the people that played SSBM played SSBM, the people that played SSBB played SSBB. Now they're both highly competitive fighters.

When SC 2 came out what did people that loved SC:BW do? They played SC:BW...

When CSS came out the people that hated it played CS 1.6...

Examples all over the place.

So much talk and so much of people doing nothing for the vCoH community except whining about how bad CoH 2 is. Makes no sense. Go do something for the community you claim to care about so much and the game you claim to love so much instead of shitposting about a game you don't even play.

I still play coh nearly every night for a couple of matches. Thing is it has lost a good chunk of the competitiveness due to the ranking system being all screwed since the server move. I play auto and basic match and cant stand the fact that ranks are no longer there. It means you can smash noobs or stack teams all day for a good record but actually be shithouse. It was easier to get games in the past matching up ranks rather than taking so much notice of records.

If you want to calculate daily playerbase from this graph you need to know how long avarage player runs the game and then calculate the integral. For example if you take 2h as an average playtime you will get that ca. 32500 players played the game yesterday. If you take 3h it is 24500 and with 4h it will give you around 18000. In either case it's much more than 5000 or 9000 and I belive 4h of avarage playtime per player is way too much.

If you assume the playerbase is 12000 players per day you also assume that avarage player plays 6 h a day. Do you play that long? I usually play for 1-2h a day if I play the game.
