What is it about the Luchs that makes it suck?

Hello All,

When I first saw the WFA trailer and they should the Luchs I was EXCITED! My favorite tank in this game was the T70 afterall and now I felt I could finally play a German faction with an Excellent little fast small target size AI monster!

I assumed it would also fill the role of the T70! Armored AI that could scout! After all why all the electronics on the little guy if thats not what he was for?

Then I played WFA......

What exactly is wrong with this thing? I understand that its was orginally not in T4 but even so its not very deadly at all.

Is it bugged? Is it supposed to be amazing yet something is preventing it from being so?

I have posted this in other threads and was told "Oh no its fine!" So for SNGs I decided on a 2v2 to use the little guy! I mean why not? More Fuel on them maps so lets give it a Whirl! Maybe all those times I tried it messing with a comp stomp I was just using it wrong!

Well thats what I thought until I literally parked it in a blob of 3 STs that didnt even run from it. Instead ran around it laughing toss nades at it...while I was still shooting the entire time. I think I killed 4 models in maybe 30 Seconds before they pulled up their AT.

So I thought WELL there MUST be some hidden use for it. So let me go raiding! There is a maxim in this yonder building on the otherside of the map all alone. It took me about 30 seconds of shooting until it lost half its models and decided to just retreat no biggie!

So now I got Vet 1 HA! Time to go sneak mode at yonder half dead mortar over here! It took about 20 seconds to kill a 3 entity low health Mortar squad.....

So whats the deal? Is there a design reason it has to suck so hard against Infantry vs the T70/T34/Sherman/Ostwind/P4/Stug/StugE/KV8/M5/Any thing else with a pintle MG?

I seriously feel like I am trying to kill infantry with a Panther with this thing. What gives?

It is horrible versus units in cover, but it's pretty effective for flanking (which is the point of it.) The problem is it just comes out too late, there is not much reason to waste fuel on it when you could get obersoldaten, which will be even more effective.

I think it has to do with the fact that OKW flak weapons (this applies to the luchs, the flakHQ, and the flak HT) tend to shoot anything at all in front of their target, even if its the slightest variation in elevation, a tiny shrub, or a wooden fence. It also comes rather late to act as an anti infantry shock unit. It struggles to win against the american AA halftrack, and is not particularly great at killing infantry. Its a unit that I think could serve the OKW well in terms of its ability to consolidate an early game advantage and leverage a strong early game into a solid mid game, but it falls short due to the time frame that it arrives, and the fact that it is mediocre overall.

Well as i noted in my example. I no shit parked it in a blob of STs. And it did BUPKISS to them. How is even a flank with this thing remotley useful. Its not scientific but it felt like trying to get squad kills with just the M3s main gun. Thats not effective for a light tank that costs what luchs cost.

It must be a targeting bug or something else. Because there was never a better time to use it to its fullest AI potential than stopping in a blob of Infantry with 0 AT.

That to me is broken.

Edit: They were also NOT in cover...

I think the luchs is supposed to fulfill the AI armored escort for the panzer.

Obersolaten can get pinned while the luchs cannot. By this time, T3 with the munition to fuel is available.

Sure. But it has 0 AI from my practical application. I think thats what its SUPPOSED TO DO but that isnt what it IS doing...

Like I said it should be like a T70 or at least a Stug...hell I would take the main gun of a P4 even...its not even a threat. Its a joke with whatever it is that is wrong with it lol. Because there is SOMETHING wrong with it....

I have used it quite a but and I am satisfied with its performance, but it could be better. What it really needs its be moved back to t1 with an increased fuel cost so it can actually be useful.

How so? What makes you satisfied? What did you use it for? How many kills do you average with it? Or are you just using it to chase light vehicles and thats what makes you satisfied with it?

Because it cannot kill infantry worth a damn compared to any other non TD in this game. At least not in my experience.

Maybe I have better luck i guess, Its at power needs a buff though because it struggles vs the t70 and the m8 greyhound, its ai power is meh I can often get it to vet 2-3 with atleast 20 kills, but its nothing to write home about. Its the only thing that can effectively fight the rifle men lmg blobs of doom.

See thats what I am saying. I can wreck shop with a T70. If any infantry even is stupid enough to try and faust it get punished hard.

A luchs? STs werent even afraid of it lol. Thats Pathetic...

When I get time ill run some tests with a buddy and see how long it takes a volks squad to kill some riflemen and then the Luchs. My bet Volks will do it faster...

OKW tiers and units are pretty FUBAR right now. Who would ever want a Luchs so late in the game when you are desperately trying to save fuel for panthers / tigers to fight enemy armor?

If they put that in the first or second buildings it might actually get used before getting blobbed to death by bazookas.

Same can be said about T70s but I will build them late. Because the small target size and speed combined with AI makes them excellent at flanking Paks. Sadly the luchs has nothing I can see going for it. It's not AT Thas for sure. I would actually get more use out of an SU76

What the hell are you talking about. The luchs wasn't nerfed because of any complaints. It was just a victim of the last second OKW revamp. It used to come more sooner, but when they changed around the unit compisition there was no place for it in the innitial OKW buildings and it got put in the one it's in now, which comes a bit late for a light tank.

It exist so if you skip t3, you have a light vehicle to field.

It's a pretty good tank.

Maybe they should swap the Stuka zu Fuß with the Panzer II?

while I do think the tech shuffle that OKW went through right before release still needs some work, I have had the Luchs perform quite well in some games since it's been buffed.

A couple of things to keep in mind with it:

Schewer Panzer HQ is pretty potent vs. medium armor now so you can bait tanks into its' range (hopefully with a Raketenwherfer supporting) using the fast Luchs.

M15 AA truck cannot shoot its autocannon while moving, only the .50 cals, so if you flank with Luchs while engaging with infantry or catch it on the move you can do some good damage or kill it (Luchs had a moving accuracy bonus in the last patch.)

All this may be true but I have no fucking clue why i got almost no kills in a blob of STs. If its not going to kill infantry with the frequency of anything more of a Puma and its in an army full of elite units why would I ever want to build this over say a Puma? (After all a Puma has more AT and probably about the same AI)

The luchs seems to kill infantry like an M3 without a Garrison. It being a late comer light tanks isnt the problem. The problem is it completely and utterly sucks hahahah

Its a toothless T70. Who would ever want that? If anything OKW needs more AI armor thats affordable. And the Luchs should be it. But its not.

The Luchs is like a mini-ostwind to me..? It's overall better than the 20mm HT.
