Yeah it does seem that the point the squad have to touch to stop retreating is tiny! It's an absolute joke. I had a couple of high vet Obers and Volks stuck at my medic HQ when a priest bombed it and took out the whole lot.
I think what's needed, is a more realistic retreat zone at the base, ie, when a unit gets within a few meters it slows down and walks toward the truck and the retreat disengages when they are within a meter. That means they all collect back at the truck, but not face planting the side of it...? |
I love this map, its one of my favourites. But I agree its heavily unbalanced and favours the south, and with the recent patch that fixed the starting positions, it has to change to become viable.

I have played against FHQ a few times recently in team games, and you can get a stuka out pretty damn quick - 8/9 mins usually. Then its GG.
Im not adverse to the idea of the FHQ entirely though, but the changes already suggested - such as 1 CP and only being able to build/use it in connected territory and being able to de-cap it, I certainly agree with. Its completely logical. |
I think the longest CoH game I've ever played was almost 3 hours on Vire River Valley in vCoH
Ahh those were the days! I remember 3/4 hour games on Vire River, The Scheldt and Achelous River! I think my long best was about 4 hours 20 minutes on Achelous.

I have to admit, the breakthrough tactics rock. They allow you to decap a point in seconds. Great if you have 2/3 squads mount an attack on a number of locations at the same time. It also gives your opponent much less time to react, meaning they cannot fire off map party at that point to force a retreat or squad wipe.
The Panther command tank, agreed, is only really useful in team games. I like it and it's good to keep alive as the bonuses it provides are worth it and the aura gets bigger with vet.
The IR STG44s are awesome too, it just means that you need to treat the obers like shock troops. Put those obers up close to something and it's squad wipe. Contrary to popular belief they easily beat shocks too. The nice thing about this weapon is, it ignores cover. So waltz up to a unit in a building with these, or something in green cover, it it makes no difference, they will get destroyed extremely quickly. IMO Obers with these guns become German shock troops. Because of the insane amount of damage they deal, they also excel at squad wiping stuff on retreat.

I think the main problem is the fact that you can't capture it like Coh1, and it still works in disconnected territory, which really it shouldn't.
I dealt with one a few days ago on Ettelbruck Station. The guy had about 3 conscript squads constantly reinforcing off it and another one of his allies had SIX mortars lined up next to it wreaking complete havok on us capturing the centre or ammo VPs... I knew quickly how to deal with it, got a Stuka, lined it up so it hit all of the mortars and the building itself and boom... Insta vet 1 Stuka and Fwd HQ dead. After that it was GG, he was pushed back almost instantly and the game was over a little while later. |
This unit rocks. It generally 2 shots most medium armour. It can easily deal with IS2s and ISUs... Those units know it's over as soon as they have been hit with a shot from it. Couple it up with a teammate that has some kind of recon ability and it's GG for all opposing armour. |
Ive just seen it happen 4 times in a single 30 min game! I am ashamed to say, the USF managed to steal an OKW stuka...

Considering the game is horribly "optimised" for windows, the amount of issues that would arise from running on Mac or Linux would be astronomical IMHO.
I'm a mac guy, but run windows for games and some non mac stuff, but Windows still is the gaming platform, maybe Linux will take over in 3-4 years, and with steam supporting that, it's likely but the game needs to be optimised for performance first. Getting regular bug splats even on well built rigs with the settings down low is not a good sign. |
Not really a bug or feature, more a limitation of the engine I'd say. |
