I think the timing of the free weekend should have been considered a little more, but I also believe there are some benefits to having it now.
The Case for Why it is Bad
If a new player is trying out the game on free weekend, they are currently being exposed to a multiplayer game state that many people are frustrated with. Bugs are a big issue, and extreme balance outliers (Axis 3v3, 4v4) create a frustrating situation for both factions. Additionally, if a player decides to buy the game, they will have to readjust to whatever balance changes happen this month.
From a marketing stand point, I also feel they should have waited until their fancy new features were introduced. Obs Mode, other stuff that will "blow our mind" according to Cynthia. That adds huge value to the game. The added value may result in more purchases, if they waited until the October patch was released to have the free weekend.
The Case for Why it is Good
On the other hand, the huge increase in players may provide a large volume of extra data Relic can analyze. We know they track game data, and increasing your sample size before finalizing a patch may help make final balance decisions. I heard talk of an open beta next week, but I don't know if this was announced in the stream (missed most of it).
The economy is most noticeable when you have to replace losses. Most OKW vehicles are very good at what they do, and are generally better at surviving than most.
Oh no way there are currency systems besides the American dollar? Either way this is typical yuropoor thinking and it's so sad that you guys can barely afford things you enjoy any more.

Generalizations like this are dangerous territory, and I'm not sure this line of posting is useful to anyone.
OKW have more AA then anybody, on units or base structures that serve other functions and are a part of the normal process of a game (Be it base flaks, or the flak truck base).
Flake base defenses, Flak HT, Flak base, and even call-in Ostwind. (One is free and one is part of the orbital defense cannon tech)
Soviets have one anti-aircraft vehicle (t3 only, 120muni upgrade), and no basic unit with a pintle MG.
Americans have the AA-HT, and pintle MGs on shermans.
Wehrmacht has Ostwind and pintle MGs.
They have more AA than any faction, and it is basically a bonus of being OKW. How can any critical and unbiased observer reasonably deduce that OKW is lacking in the AA department?
Stuka hard counters FHQ and weapon teams, and the Wehr mortar will outclass soviets mortar easily. If they spam 120mm mortars, they're using a lot of manpower and pop cap to do so.
What's the point of taking your random rank seriously? You know you can add people to your Steam friends list in-game right? If you take random team matches seriously you are doing it wrong.
Probably best to avoid telling people what they should or should not enjoy.
