Osteer Sniper is more than viable in 1v1.
I just played a game that reached well into the late game mark. I considered purchasing a sniper at all 3 points of the game, early, mid and late.
However, there are just so many other units that would have aided me better. An extra Machine-gun, Panzer grenadiers, or just another Grenadier squad. At the moment I honestly don't see the appeal for the Germans to build the sniper. Of course you could use the argument that it drains the Soviet of manpower, especially if he is using Shock Troops. But the 6 man weapon teams really don't help the sniper. By the time you have them down to 4 men, either support is on the way or you are forced to retreat.
And yes I understand you have to screen your sniper with other units, but with Oorah and running 2 man Russian sniper teams. It really is just a pain 9 times out of 10. |

Here is what I do/ my build order:
Doctrine: Anti Infantry Tactics (Very important)
Build:
Early Game
3x Conscripts
1x Engineer (Mainly for building, but can upgrade both with flamers)
1x Maxim or Mortar (For bunkers)
1x Shock troops
Mid Game
1x ZiS anti tank
2-3x T34
1x Shock troops
Late Game
KV - If appropriate, this thing wrecks!
Katuysha - If appropriate.
Incendiary artillery
With this build, the ZiS should always be supported by either a T34 or a Conscript squad or two. This way if the Panzer or Ostwind is stupid enough to 'rush' the ZiS it will receive a damaged engine (Anti tank grenade) and at least one shot to the front. The T34 can then sweep up and take out the trash.
But honestly, try out the build. I've had a lot of success with it. I don't even need to go near the clown cars.
P.S The ZiS and T34's are essential to this build, if needed build more of them! (Also call in Shock Troops as needed.) |
I've come up against this strategy a lot recently, it's as If I am playing a computer or something, because the amount of bunker spam is just confusing. Building 3-4 bunkers early is just suicide for the Heer. Anyway here is what I've used against it in case anyone else comes up against it.

Incendiary artillery - Great for dispersing a strong point, which are likely due to bunker spam.
This has worked well for me so far, as early game the Germans don't seem to have that much manpower on the field. You can usually beat a grenadier squad with the Engineer and Conscript squad. If not, I usually just out cap him over the map. Giving you more resources to pump out your T34 quite early.
P.S Engineer demolition charges are super effective against buildings. |
Fair enough. Touche.
PaK43 was indeed a later and developed version of this.
But what would it do ingame?
Flak 88mm would have the ability to counter armour as well as those pesky Sturmoviks. |
I think having the ability to upgrade to MP-40s would make them better. Although remember they are "relief" infantry, and I guess they were just added to plug holes in the line until you can get another front-line unit up. (Grenadiers, PGrens)
I also heard that Relic only put them in the game for the campaign, as they were really useless infantry, and easier to kill in the early stages.
Although I agree, at the moment they are not work the upkeep/pop cap. |
"ruins of Moscow" "Mosdorf"
best maps ever?
I can confirm, best map name ever. |
I love all those Historians in this thread that come up with singular events during that era and then totally ignore the Larger picture.
This. Remember when X executed Y during [Insert Date here]?
I believe that even today Russians, as they should, take great pride in the achievement of driving back a foreign invader. If they feel offended that is their opinion. No point in trying to bring up individual events to try and detract from the idea that a nation is proud of defending itself.
I like to think that those on the forum are educated enough to find sources of information individually, and do their own research into certain eras and events. Although from looking at the majority of comments on MetaCritic, that doesn't seem to be the case. |
I believe that any game that chooses to portray a truly sensitive part of history, whether it be the Eastern Front, the First World War or even the Crimea, it deserves respect.
In Russian eyes I can see how this would be pretty outrageous. (Just noticed that if you zoom into the houses that are burning, you hear women and children screaming)I also agree that the game should have focused only on the Soviet effort to turn the tide of the German invader. Pavlov's House anyone?
Forget all of this story coming from a political prisoner 6+ years later. Tell it in "real time" as it were. I honestly don't understand it. The idea of a prisoner being interrogated and having flashbacks has been over done. For example, why not follow a division from its birth until its death, is that not dark enough? Show countless divisions and tank battalions being wiped out in a matter of days. There was no need for Relic to rustle people's political Jimmies.
I understand the idea that Relic wanted to portray the war in a very dark light. I believe this is because they wanted to pay respect to those who fought the Patriotic War. However, they seemed to have got their wires crossed in terms of actual story writing. A campaign can be dark without the need to listen to screaming children and in some eyes disrespecting the Russian people.
War is a terrible thing, and sacrifices, war crimes, heroism and suffering was endured on both sides. Yes this is a game, but, like any form of media, it should show a degree of respect to those who were involved. We owe them that at least. |

Can I ask, are both Barton and VonIvan permanently banned? I know that VonIvan may be, but I don't know about Barton. |
