Hey guys!
First of all I think I have to say that this post only reflects my feeling about the game right now and is not supposed to be a definite opinion on balance since I feel there are more qualified players out there.
That being said I feel the need to express my thought about how I feel about the game right now. As I said I'm far from being a top player (usually playing around rank 5-6 with Ost, OKW and US) but I enjoyed the game quite a lot. My favorite faction was always Ostheer although it also was the faction that gave me the hardest time. I play the game since the Beta but I first started playing 1vs1 about a year or so.
I usually enjoyed working on my skills and had a lot of great feedback in the State Office.
With the last patch I feel that something has changed significantly. I have to admit that I completely stopes playing Ostheer because I feel it has become incredibly frustrating. OKW can be more rewarding but also very, very frustrating. Although not a pro by any means I usually know when a player is of better, lesser or equal skill quite well judging by micro skills, placement etc. Since the last patch I feel that I'm losing games I usually win when playing Axis, especially Ostheer.
I always felt that Ostheer was lacking something after WFA released but now it just feels like an uphill struggle without end. Brits increased that feeling a lot and now that the patch significantly changed a lot of the tools of Soviets and USF and to a lesser extent the Brits to the better and thus also increased their synergy, it's become so much harder to have fun.
I always played a bit off of the meta, never blobed, never spammed Shrecks and enjoyed myself quite a lot.
Now it feels like there's so much more strategies that are so incredibly frustrating on the receiving end. Even Viccers Spam into AEC/Mortarpit into Croc/Firefly works now vs OKW ( I know there will be a strategy to counter this, it's just one example).
My point is that I feel with the current balance I'm simply not good enough to play as Axis which I find somewhat odd. I mean shouldn't all factions be roughly the same in difficulty?
I'm doing fine with USF even without building the mortar and the faction is still fun like before. It has all the tools needed for tons of diverse strategies, some great commanders and overall feels very rewarding. Rifles are so much more enjoyable because of their durability compared to Grens especially. Mixed with Rangers I feel like I get a really enjoyable mix of units to play around with.
With OKW I feel like I'm missing the tools I need. The ISG is somewhat nice but not enough to clear buildings of MGs and for flanking I lack the needed smoke to cover. When going Med Truck I miss the light vehicle and Raketen dies so fast that it's simply not fun. So again I'm lacking something.
With Ostheer it feels that everything just comes to late. I feel like I have to play aggressive but the tools are lacking or are not suitable.
How do you guys feel? Is it just me? I mean I know there's a reason I'm ranked 5 and not 14, but I guess the game should be fun with all factions even if I'm playing on rank 1400 or so shouldn't it? I should be able to enjoy all factions without dedicating my whole private life to the game or am I wrong with that?
Note please, this is not supposed to be a rage thread nor am I in any form a fanboy. I know those accusations get tossed around here quite often but I hope to get a calm discussion going and really want to hear some open opinions on the points I brought up. Thanks guys.

They don't rely on emplacements.
One of the playstyles do.
That is why you can go either for AEC or bofors.
Plus, we still have shreckblobs and 222 is severely underpriced for current survivability to the point where AEC is useless because of much cheaper pair of 222s, pyrotechnics upgrade is unreliable, brits don't have nearly as much field presence as other factions unless you spam REs and there is no effective stock indirect fire outside of mortar pit, so brits are kind of forced into the pit to keep map control and counter aggressive HMG placement.
Thanks for the explanation!
It's just so aweful to play against that I didn't consider the bigger picture. I still hope they change something so that we can get rid of that playstyle. I find it quite enjoyable to play against mobile Brits but especially in team games there's almost never a mobile one. It's usually a Brit locking down the fuel or two victory points and the rest of the team actually attacking. That is really annoying and hard to deal with from my experience. Mostly because defense swallows all resources so the Brit can go full Sim City.

Just for my understanding guys, why do Brits have to rely on emplacements?
As far as I understood it (which might be to a lesser extent because I'm not a very good or experienced player) Brits got very potent infantry, a good light vehicle, sniper, very good AT gun, a lot of very good tanks, good weapon upgrades, one of the best MGs, a mobile vehicle based flamer, etc.
All they are missing is the mobile mortar. So why do they have to get Bofors? It sounds as if they stand no chance without it.
Coming from the low end of the ladder with lots to learn especially when it comes to micro, I find it a very unpleasant experience to play agains Emplacement Brits. I always feel I got like 5 minutes of game until a part of the map is a no go zone. If I don't oriented my complete build order and play style towards anti Emplacemt play the game is over.
In team games it feels even worse. |
Are you discussing your experiences in 1v1?
What Imagelessbean is describing is the reality in 3v3 and up. Since these modes are more heavy on the armour department, JT scales much better in those modes. Since units should be balanced according to the modes they are the most potent in, I fail to observe an error in Imagelessbean's logic.
JT is both a mobile Pak43 AND an artillery piece (40MU for 125 range). Currently it's just too easy to use. With the addition of MG34 in the faction, this will shut down the currently best avenue of approach to take that unit down; thus it will become even stronger. (The doctrine already has snares, since it contains pfussies).
Wouldn't that in theory mean, that a unit that maybe overperformes in 4vs4 due to extremely higher resource income and team play should be nerfed even if that means that the unit will completely vanish from all other game modes? I don't think that's the right approach. |
Well since we're not talking balance I don't see the problem. If this works out and OKW doesn't end OP it will deliver a very enjoyable experience. Everyone complains about too few viable strategies factions end up with and OKW had that problem too. Now it's much more diverse.
Do I wish that they'll do that to OST? I shure as hell do! But for now I'm glad they do it at all. Will make the game a lot more enjoyable after all.
And can someone please explain to me what the problem with snare and Shrek is? Ost hast that since the beginning. |
I know how you feel OP.
I used to play a lot of Ostheer and in some way it is my favorite faction but right now I just can't make it work for me. I can't figure out why though. It is correct that they have a lot of great tools but somehow it feels like it is so much harder to achieve anything with Ost as it is right now.
Usually you get the advice to get to the late game because this is where Ostheer shines but right now this is incredibly hard. And on top Brits late game outshines Osts late imo.
It's just a huge struggle with tons of micro involved to get mediocre results that you can more easily achieve with the other factions.
But on the bright side whenever I win a game as Ost I feel a lot prouder then with any other faction especially because I tend to avoid meta and refuse to play double sniper or 444. |
Grammar nazi alert - I believe the term you are looking for is "gtfo" as "btfo" is not correct in this grammatic context. "Get btfo" would be correct.
But seriously, allow me to explain myself at least. A certain level of standard is expected from a forum badge, even a green one. Which is why I tend to notice when they behave haughty and superior to other players, as opposed to regular posters whose l2pposting just whooshes past my head. I've noticed the strategists' attitudes to new and experienced players before and have actually exchanged words with senior mods about this problem. I think the contents of the discussion would surprise you. Now obviously I am not going to post the details of private messages publicly, but they are available on PM if you do not believe me.
My point is, a few bad apples absolutely can spoil the bunch. How does the badge in and of itself have any worth if it's a crapshoot whether the guys having the badge will be helpful members of the community, or dismissive / constantly questioning people's skill when ever a potentially valid argument is put forward?
Perhaps it is my fault for expecting too much of a badge that indicates nothing more than that the user contributed to the guides section (which you are rightfully proud of). But when I see "strategist" I think "I should listen to this guy, he knows what he is talking about". If I have offended anyone who does useful work for the community, I will gladly personally apologize for my generalization. It was not my wish to derail the thread and I don't mind going to PM if you wish to take this discussion further.
I don´t want to derail the thread but I feel the need to step in for tobis.
In all of my state Office threads he has helped me a lot, invested lots of time to watch my replay and even explained stuff further via PM.
Overall he was very friendly and helpful to me. And besides that I think that the balance section of the forums is really a toxic place where everyone is very inclined to his own opinion in general. Everyone is human even if a Batch is handed out and even strategists have a right to express their opinion.
And since we´re speaking about prove, just look at my thread in the Ostheer state Office.
Anyways sorry for offtopic. Can´t really say much to the Topic, except that I really wish there was a way to get rid of blobbing. It still is too effective although counters exist imo. And since I´m on the low end of the ladder I really see it often....very often.. |
Hey mate and welcome to the hell that is COH 2 multiplayer!
Keep in mind that it is a totally different game while playing against humans and you have to use totally different build orders, tactics and so on.
I recommend watching some top Players casts and streams to get an idea how this all works. I personally like the Propagandacast a lot. It´s like watching Football for me.
After that head over to the state Office department of the Forums and ask for some adive. There are very friendly people there who will help you improve quite quickly.
Also a litte tip from me, from noob to noob so to say! Try playing a few games with every faction or better try playing them all on a regular Basis. This will help you understand your opponents better and will Show you the limits of his Units and such.
Don´t be discuraged. It´s a game with a rough start but it also get´s very rewarding if you get the hang of it.
Also the first ten matches are your Placements. There is a huge possibility that you´ll Play against much more skilled opponents. During that 10 games the game will estimate your skill Level to match you qith equally skilled Players after that. You just have to bite through those 10 matches. It gets better, I promise! |
if only all noob problem threads were like this. CoH threads would be beautiful to look at. It'd be like waking up to a cup of tea, some bread or eggs with the news on.
I do also wish it was that way. The amount of state Office threads ( one of my main sources I try to improve with ) is nowhere near the amount of new balance threads. And tbh I think most of those balance threads really should be state Office threads because I feel a lot of the Players creating those threads suffer from the same problems as I do.
And the one thing that really makes me wonder is why that´s the case. I mean look at this thread or my others in the state Office. Noone is calling me a noob (well...exept..you know... ), everyone is posting constructive Feedback, most of the people posting are also very, very supportive wishing me luck with improving and such. It´s just a very nice experiance posting here. I mean theres People around here who invest no less then 40 to 50 minutes watching my game and commenting on it. Hell I bet there´s some girlfriends around there that recieve less time if they have a Problem with make up or shoes ( just kidding, no offence Girls ) .
To summarise: I really love the way people here are handling this and the kind attitude over here at the state Office.
Edit: so much spelling mistakes! O.0 To my excuse I´m german! |
General overview:
You are doing an absolutely great job of spreading out and denying him fuel. Your micro of units however is not up to par with your capping ability and you bleed out MP like crazy after the 6 minute mark. You also continue to opt for grens when you see a blob of 5-6 units. You could easily afford to build as many MG42's and let them suppress the blob. You purchase both stormtroopers and PG's which makes little sense, if you go elite get Stormtroopers and rely on the pak with gren support until a tank can arrive. You spend your munitions on intelligent upgrades, in general, but you fail to put down s-mines on flanks, which would immediately threaten the blob. If you can bring your micro up considerably you will be beating these rifle blobs in short order.
From the replay places to improve:
You build an MG early and send it forward to take a building without scouting first. You are not punished for this but you are lucky.
Your MG sits in the building for more than 5 minutes without doing anything.
You fail to faust a greyhound when it makes a push at his cutoff, this alone could have won you the game early.
You do a fairly good job of retreating as the game starts, but then fail to retreat an MG when you had loads of time to do so and give the American a real gift.
You place two squads in a building with 3 windows, and then have them both wiped when a single nade brings the building down.
You are too aggressive with your pak gun, although you do get lucky. It should have a gren within faust range of it at all times.
By the mid game you are losing lots of units to wipes which is costing you a fortune.
Your first P4 does great work, but you have it at half health and proceed to dive behind his lines. At this point you are just asking for a rifle nade, in short order it dies.
Second P4 is moved into position to attack and sits statically firing at the blob until it dies. This unit should have been allowed to fire at the blob and then backed up at half health for repairs.
Pak guns should always hold fire and prioritize vehicles, at all times (almost). Yours fires at infantry for the majority of the game.
Your third P4 is ok, and does well in mid vs. the blob, but you do not move it between engagements so he knows exactly where it is when he comes back. The same can be said of your MGs. They need to move after you force him to retreat. Same area, new wall.
You opt for an Ostwind late, when he has 3 shermans and you know of two and dive it into an AT gun for little gain. You should have gotten 2 stugs and given up the Pak 40 you also purchased. These would have made short work of the Shermans and opened up your P4 to deal with infantry.
You do a good job of spreading grens out to take MGs, but those are YOUR MGs! He should never get his hands on them.
When he has roving tanks you send a number of high vet units behind the lines and he simply fines them and then wipes them.
Suggestion:
Try playing a game without having a single lost squad. See if you can manage to keep every squad you start with alive until the late game. If you can do this you will notice a significant improvement in your game. Do not wait as long to retreat, you want the squad back at base.
Thanks a lot for this very, very detailed review of my game and taking the time to watch the replay! It really helps a lot!
Somehow I seldome go for more then 1 MG 42 and I can´t really say why. It is really something I have to work on and the overall handling of the MGs. Thank you very much for pointing this out.
Those Greyhounds hit me totally unprepared. just hadn´t them in mind and when the first one hit me it was a big WTF for me as I was expecting him to go for a Stuart. I guess I have to work on that too.
The two veteran squads who found a poor death crushed by that building still haunt me in my dreams! I have no clue what the bloody hell I was thinking while doing that!
"You do a good job of spreading grens out to take MGs, but those are YOUR MGs! He should never get his hands on them."
That one really made my day! I had to laugh pretty hard and then I realised how the poor Grens must have felt while thinking exactly that!
I´ll definatly try your suggestion! Sounds like a real good way to get my unit preservation under control.
Again thank you very much for your time and Feedback Imagelessbean! It really helps a lot and is what makes this community so great. Plus I think it takes away from the frustration this game sometimes causes. Was really pissed after the match but now I´m glad it went the way it did and I´m also very glad I posted the replay here.
