Again, too much "in a vacuum" comparison without considering why sappers have the tools they do.
As infantry, they're the only non-doctrinal brit inf that can fire on the the move. Its one of few options for actually hurting poor positioning of weapons teams for example. Every other faction has non-doctrinal inf that can do decent dps at close range while moving (panzergrens, sturms, riflemen, conscripts).
On the repair rate, consider what sappers have to actually repair. Emplacements require significant repairs to keep them going, nerfing repairs speeds would be a further nail in the coffin.
Brits also only have two light vehicles that will ever need repairs - a universal carrier and (maybe, depending on choice) the AEC. Any tank they have to repair will still be out for a while.
So yes, sappers are better than pioneers - but they're much more important to the brit army than pioneers. |
The rifle nade works well with how grens (normally) work - at long range. The mills bomb works counter to how tommies normally work.
The whole reason for two weapon slots on allied inf is to give them a choice of anti inf specialization, anti tank specialization or a mix of both. It's just that anti inf is usually the better choice. If tommies were limited to either a PIAT or a bren, I'd never take the PIAT, not that it would change much... |
Well, looking at grenadiers in particular largely from a brit perspective.
You have the panzerfaust, which is enough to counter or mitigate brit vehicles until medium armour. Even end game this makes grens significant when using armour since a broken engine can spell death by pak 40 pretty easily. To be any sort of threat to armour an infantry section has to take a PIAT, thus giving up one of the weapon slots.
There's the rifle nade, which if nothing else means having to watch every engagement with grens carefully. An infantry section will rarely do anything other than find cover to shoot from since the grenades generally aren't worth the teching costs. The rifle nade also gives limited utility against MGs.
Finally you also get your LMG delivered on field. Combine that with a halftrack for reenforcement and you have a pretty potent early/mid game combo.

I don't see any reason why axis squads (i.e. grenadiers) should get 2 lmgs considering their other utility. |
The anti-tank grenade was pretty underwhelming as well. How does it compare to other factions?
I did a little bit of testing with hold the line and territories. The two main conditions are that it only affects territories that border enemy territories when activated, and it has to be capped by you personally. The latter is a bit counter-intuitive since I can't actually cap friendly territories away from my ally... |
That's what I thought, but in game evidence shows that it has been applied to the arty commander as well. Perhaps I should have filed this as a bug since it's an undocumented change. |
As of this patch, the concentration barrage in the british artillery commander can no longer fire into the fog of war.
I'm honestly not sure if this is a design decision or an outright bug, since it makes an already bad commander completely pointless by removing the one genuinely useful ability it had. For the avoidance of confusion, this is the ability that costs 100 muni to fire your base howis. It's both more expensive and fires less shells than the regular section flares. If I have to get into sight range anyway, why bother with this ability? |
Just worth mentioning that concentrated artillery costs 250 muni and has a 5 minute cooldown after the last shell.
Railway arty costs 200 muni and has a 20 second cooldown after the last shell. Also available in a commander with redistribute resources. |
If you took away the AV capability of the brit sniper, what do you leave it with? At that point you'd have to make it a straight up clone of the ost sniper.
I'd also add that the brits have no inf based vehicle snare like AT nades or the panzerfaust which is why the sniper has that ability. |
-Universal Carrier has had an inappropriate line of speech removed
-AEC Mk. III Armored Car has had an inappropriate line of speech removed
Anyone know which lines these were? I can't remember anything inappropriate off hand. |
