I'm rank ~1000 with OKW and got this guy who is rank 24 with USF and he beat me in under 15 minutes.

Question: what the fuck is wrong with matchmaking?

Shouldn't I get players close to my rank?

Might be placement match, if you haven't played for a while. Otherwise, the game takes available players outside of your bracket if it doesn't find any players that are as low/high as you are.

The game will slowly expand the rank range it'll match you with the longer you search. You occasionally get a matchup like that because one or both of you had been searching long enough.

Surprised you lasted that long. This is an unfortunate side effect of having a relatively small player base, sometimes you get unfair matches. The longer you spend searching the more the algorithm expands its parameters, increasing the chance that you'll match with someone outside your ELO range.

I will admit this is a particularly lopsided match, but you can minimize the chances of this happening in the future by restarting your search every few minutes or so.
