So why would we need to have first hand experience? We have a cognitive mind and we are able to have quite a vivid imagination. Would would living in poorness be required?

Hmmm. yea I think that's it! I was thinking too much I guess. And beside the "point" he is trying to make (which as you said is obvious for anyone older than 12), I literally can not understand what he's trying to say, the literature itself is confusing.
