It was gutted in this patch:

M4A3 Sherman
The Sherman's HE shells have been adjusted to be more reliable at dealing damage, but also less capable at wiping out squads.

Projectile now bypasses terrain/landscape.
HE shell AOE distance from 0.75/1.5/2.25 to 0.5/1.25/2.25
HE far AOE damage from 0.05 to 0.01

The first sentence was utter rubbish. They decreased the AOE to 20% of what it was, which didn't make it more reliable. It never had a significant problem with colliding with terrain.

I wasn't playing back then yet, but nowadays sherman has the best AOE, in my opinion, with HE shells out of medium tanks. Guessing it used to be quite a beast.

It's always been good, that was the whole point of having HE and AP rounds. I don't think the numbers I found from that patch are correct, because 0.01 would only be 1.6 damage and it seems like it's a lot more.

I think that's because PIV, for example, is 0.75/1.25/1.875, while M4A3 is 0.5/1.25/2.25. Maybe Sir MMX can elaborate on those stats. Not in a mood for geometry, lol.

Also according to Serelia M4A3 is 160/56/16. Pretty wierd though

The numbers you have come from three different things. The 0.5/1.25/2.25 are ranges, in the same way that most AT guns have 60 range. It's the distance from shell impact to the individual model. The next set of numbers is 1/0.35/0.1 which is the multiplyer. To get Serelia's numbers, multiply 1/0.35/0.1 by 160 to get 160/56/16, which is the damage that is done for a 160 damage tank. I'd believe Serelia's numbers for the M4A3.

I think it is 16. Relic's patch notes were often incomplete and incorrect. If it ever was 1.6, it was probably reverted quickly.

just used like 20 of these yesterday. the anti armor is good but this thing cant kill infantry that good. you could be shooting at a blob still missing. i had to many lvl 3 e8s and very few kills like sometimes 2 sometimes 6. but did good vs armor to get the vet. no inf kills. scatter sucks and aoe sucks

Per Serelia, the best bleed medium tanks are the T-34 and the P-4, with their large 80 damage radius, while HE Sherman and Cromwell have larger absolute AoEs with good damage. Sherman and Cromwell are less prone to just murdering squad members. Fun note, The KV-1 has the T-34 gun, that's a big reason its so good vs inf.

The E8 has REALLY BAD AI stats, but I've found its workable once they get vet and numbers. The E8 provides armor superiority and enough AI to punish infantry over time, like a Panther. It REALLY bullies any armor smaller than a Panther, and 2 can generally out-duel a Panther.

Focused Gunnery seems to work as advertised, turning it REALLY into a baby Panther. It loses with Panther having half health, but the E8 is pretty mobile and the tank crew fixes it dang fast, so it builds critical mass nicely. Pretty much exactly like Panther spam, but with built in repair crews.

Seems alright. Rifle Company may need more tweaking, but I don't think the E8 is the problem. Maybe move the M3 much earlier so it can be used as a super light (Soviet M3 clown car style), instead of competing directly with Stuart or AA Half track, both of which provide much much more, especially when the Ambu is already around to provide FREE healing and reinforcement. Food for thought.

I think it used to have the same profile as the M4C. Being able to decrew it and abuse the pop cap, plus being able to take one additional hit was what got it nerfed the first time. I had a game where a teammate got 9 of them. When he hit that critical mass, he completely rolled over his side of the map then hit my side of the map. The other side got really salty.

I've tried it a few times in comp stomps. I don't think it's completely trash but it isn't a huge improvement over a standard Sherman.

Rather than give it any more stat increases, it would be interesting to add an ability:

If the MG upgrade is picked, let it switch between AP and HE. This would make it great against massed infantry.

If the commander upgrade is picked, give it either mark target or a 40 range time-on-target.

the E8 gun is the exact same AOE characteristics of the 76mm Sherman gun (M4C). Still does.
