I am a very old Company of Heroes fan and recently found myself reminiscing with an old friend about the earliest days of Company of Heroes. After hours of fondly remembering the pros we used to watch, the matches we enjoyed played, and the bugs we loved to hate, I was motivated by the power of nostalgia to seek out some videos or commentaries of those early games. Unfortunately, I found that most were unavailable, and had disappeared along with filefront and mediafire.

Rather than be deterred, I decided to use my considerable freetime (thanks COVID-19) to dig out my Company of Heroes disk, install from version 1.0 and rewatch and recast some of the most iconic games of all time. Episode 1 is now available on youtube. It charts an early post-release battle between th15 (Terror Doctrine) and Archit3ct (Armor Company) on Angoville.

You can expect large scale tank battles (featuring the original Tiger Ace and main gun-equipped Sherman Calliope), infantry sniping panzerfausts, bugged mines, Observation Posts galore, and rifleman squads with 3 BARs!

I realise there is likely a very small and very niche audience for this, but if such an audience exists I'm sure some of you will be here!

Haha, I had the same thought! The level of play ramped up very quickly after these humble beginnings!
Stay tuned for some Nystrom/Sepha games in the near future!

The units are so spread out. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Pros:
* Less prone to rng squad wipes by indirect fire
* Less prone to squad wipes by grenades

Cons:
* I think cover will still have to be clumped up unless you make the walls and objects larger and cover more spread out. Might be a programming limitation
* Less punishing to blobs

Was clumping intentional from Relic's side and why?

From memory, clumping of infantry units was less of an issue in early vCoH. I think the community as a whole struggled more against supression units such as MGs, which heavily discouraged clumping of units. Furthermore, the game was more about the rush to armor, Tier 3 in the Axis case and Tier 4 in the allies. It was not uncommon to go for a 3 Rifle + Fuel OP start, and beeline straight for a fast Sherman. We would punish such a play today, but it was quite strong in the early meta! With fewer infantry units on the field, clumping wasn't as common. Finally, it's hard to ignore that this was before some blob-promoting mechanics were introduced in Opposing Fronts.

I had no idea! I really hope I'm not treading on your toes here. I'll link your cast of the Episode 1 game in the description of my video, and avoid recasting any games you've already got to. From what I can see, the other legacy games you casted were Nystrom vs Ahenian (1.2), Sepha vs Ahenian (1.2), and Seph vs ffish (1.71). If there's any more out there, please let me know and I'll steer clear.

I just released a cheeky "Blitz Episode" of Company of Heroes History. It's a shorter video, showing the might of the Terror Doctrine Panzerschreck rush at its peak in 1.2!
